  • What the differences between using wax and mirror glass wax?....

  • Hi! Liked yr work..Pls help me in joining two horizontal halves of a narrow cylinder or pillar so that the plug can be removed easily..How do I join them from inside where its difficult to reach..

    Thanks...

  • That is so cool. I would have never have thought of that!

  • you should wear gloves.

  • one word .... excellent !

  • i've got a TS '94 magna, i want to make a fibreglass box for my sub but there is no mouldings out there that i can find, how do i start from scratch, do i make the flexi-glass try to put it in the corner of my boot and put clay on top to get the mould or is there another way? i just have no clue haha

  • Thanks for this series of videos. Helped me alot in the beginning. Made alot since.. copying a front splitter.. making a huuge 4 part mold of a quarterpanel.. etc. One thing that still troubles me now and then, is sharp corners.

  • What did you make the plug out of?

  • Your not ment to brush the resin over the matting thats how you get air bubbles, your ment to dab the resin onto the the matting.

  • Could you lay this on a mold of an item and get that mold out? Also what type is that called i cant find it.

  • Its a shame that alot of the guys out there with badass trucks and cars always stop halfway with their boxes/consoles/etc and don't take the effort to mold their pieces and make full solid 'glasses parts. I just could never be satisfied knowing I have a concoction of mdf/bondo/glass/fleece/paint/etc in my vehicle. Lol!

  • GasserGlass is right, your videos ARE badass man! Nice to see "how to" videos DONE PROPERLY !! respect to you for that! Cheers!

  • what is the name of wax

  • Comment removed

  • nice music ! nice job !

    Name of music please ?

  • @rpgtagflag First music please ... tanks !

  • @rpgtagflag Says at end. 9:50

  • @rpgtagflag the 1st song is: "Cold Chisel - Khe Sanh" & number 2, I am not so sure of.... Have a nice day.

  • One question, where did you get your clay from? I need to get some for a bike fairing

  • @DSPPaige Its sold as 'plasticine' in 4KG blocks and is sold by the same fiberglass supplier I get all my stuff from, FGI or Nuplex.

  • @DSPPaige great vid. very helpful, i like the sped up video, very nice and ...thanx for sharing,

    .

    Camchain@hardkore psychols

  • I dont know if you still monitor your youtube, but I like to ask some newbie question.

    1. use wax polishing so that resin fiberglass doesn't stick, correct?

    2. is it the same step procedure if I use sheet metal, aluminum?

  • @KwaiTerk

Yes it will give release for metal as well, just make sure there is nothing for it to grip, like holes, ruff edges, ruff surfaces or unfinished/unground welding

  • you rock dude...seriously...thank you

  • very well ilustrated any advice on making lip kits?

  • very well ilustrated any advice on making lip kits?

  • This is a great video, thanks for making it!

  • Where can I get some of the crap wood?

  • Great video !! its def not easy to find fiberglassing and molding videos !

  • What kind of ass holes would put a thumbs down on these video?

I really appreciate all your videos.

    Thanks

  • great vid, thanks for posting...

  • WAX ON!

  • very good

  • thanks for being so generous and taking the time to film, cut and process this video. its very useful to be able to watch and learn! thank you :)

  • Hey mate, this is a really great video. I have a few questions though.

Why do you "wax on, and wax off"? Aren't you defeating the purpose of wax, when you wax it off after you have applied it?

What do you mean by the term "Flanging"?

Why do you choose to use fibreglass mat instead of fibreglass fabric? Any pros and cons?

  • Have you used epoxy on a surface like that, I know pu resin pops off any mold but Im having a hard time finding some mold release that will release the epoxy like what you just did.

  • what is your recipe for the gel-coat?

  • good video, thanks.

  • how hard would it be, if even possible, to inverse a mold and mirror a particular piece. i'm missing the left ram cover on my r6 and thought maybe i could recreate it from the right side..?

    thanks and great videos

  • lolol wax on wax off

  • went to a few hardware store today and non of them had the matte strand that u used.. the cloths they had looked thick. where do i get the correct supplies??c

  • anyone know a good mold release for gelatin in an ultracal 30 mold? preferably something I can buy locally without having to order?

  • hi. i recently saw a blog where a man used fiberglass and resin to make a kitchen knife. i think he folded layers of fiberglass together and cut it out to a shape of a knife and sand it down to get the sharp edge it needed to perform cutting task.

my question is whether or not can the knife withstand the daily chores of cutting,chopping,mincing,etc... will they edge get blunt easily, can it be sanded again to get a sharp edge. because i want to invest in fiberglassing kitchen knifes.i'm a chef.

  • i love how you are doing it without gloves. enjoy your hands bleeding and die later!

  • poor flanging method

  • where did u get the matte strand thingy...

  • This is excellent. Moves along without leaving anything out!

  • very well done... good vid... thanks

  • awesome process!

  • Hi, Great videos! I would love to see a video which shows the creation of the original form. If you did not have another speaker box to work from how would you go about making the original. Would you use expanding foam? How is that done in the boot of your car? How do you shape it? Thanks!

  • I not understand material FG supplyer? what is this material. Thanks

  • what would be good flanging material ?

  • Thankyou for that very helpful pair of videos. I build model boats and your tutorial is a great help as 2 part molds work so much better.

  • Hi i was wondering how you made the plug. i was thinking of something like chicken wire to get a rough shape then wrap it with fabric and finish the mould off with clay. if you could give me a heads up if im sort of in the right ball park or if i should do something different youd be a legend. cheers mitch

  • Do you use acetone to clean your HVLP gun?

  • Where did you get box type thing that you shaped it all round as if a strange shape? Grate video and advice, i'm defiantly going to have a go.

  • would you be able to fiberglass a hood with old hood as mold if so how

  • @JuggernautRecords Yes I have already done this for my rally car. Follow same techniques as in videos, make sure you flange. Im limited to comments and cant help you anymore in words then my videos can.

  • Great explination of the process.

  • hey i wanna make a whole entire fiberglass hood for my thunderbird..

can i use the stock hood as a mold??

and just add the scoop and then put the fiberglass on top??

    will it work??

  • Excellent video! Expert advice! You should upload your video to Ewisdomtv

  • @susanbunch1980 Thanks man. I didnt know about this place. Thanks for telling me, ive made account.

  • I'm thinking about making a solo cowl for my motorcycle. I'd probably need about half the supplies you used (and no clay). They go for about $150 in stores. About how much would it cost me to make the solo cowl by myself? Thanks in advance. And great video.

  • @RapscallionStallion If your just counting consumables and you dont care about time then it will be cheaper to make it, not by much. Do it to make some for friends, or to learn the trade, not to save a few bucks.

  • @punk28186 I think he just wanted to know because cost is a factor. We dont know how much the supplies will cost until we buy em. If he's like me, he wants to know if it will be worth his time to try doing it himself, not to save money necessarily but to be cost effective. Its a risk to try to do it yourself without any formal training other than watching his videos. Its better to know ahead of time what your risking to lose. And some of us want it as a hobby not a career.

  • very cool!!! pretty clear and useful!!! thanks :)

  • very good thanks

  • we have fiberglass production molds for sale we make and sale production moulds for the lincoln town car 90 thru 97 you make more than 250 parts from it at least start your own business

  • Correct, if you can think of a good inovative idea that can have tooling made easily at home then you can def start a business with that.

  • hey bud.. how would you be able to fiberglass your own hood? i have a carthat they dont make parts for it anymore. so i decided to take matters in my own hands and make one myself. but never had any fg'n. been following your videos and it seems easy enough for me to attempt. let me know pleease.

  • Easiest way is to modify an existing one to what you want and take a mould. Or you could make replicas first and modify them if your worried about damage. Using polyurethane foam body filler etc.

  • great I need to give this a try.

  • Rate My Video Two Stars

  • how did u make the white peice you started out with?

  • Thats a whole process in itself, sorry, cant just sum that up in one post.

  • dude man im in cali right now. i think we share the same shipping.

  • cali as in CA, USA? Im in Australia so I dont think so. There will be heaps near you, or you can buy off the net.

  • Im realy interested in doing this! I went to the home depot though and they had no materials. Where is a good place to purchase some?

  • Im really not sure in your country. Try just looking up marine supplies or fiberglassing in the yellowpages/business directory.

  • @amesjl2 HOME DEPOT should have fibre glass chop mat and threaded along with some cheap resin all made by 3M its in the paint section by the paint strippers. Walmart also carries it in the automotive section by the bondo. auto stores like autozone also have it.... (Tip if you will leave the surface of fibre glass unpainted use a different nicer resin the 3M basic one is ugly and brown.)

  • @amesjl2 and dont bother using fibreglass when you start practicing chop up and use old denim jeans that you can get from your closet or a local thrift store.... its not as strong but ALLOT CHEAPER.

  • its hard to read your text.use the caption feature of youtube insteqad of putting the text in the video itself

  • Very interesting video . Congratulations!

  • love the sound track. who is it?

  • says at 9:48

  • Cold chisel

  • Cold Chisel-Last Plane out of Sydney

  • The song is actually kalled "Khe Sanh"

  • very informative.thank you.

  • what was the clay for?

  • The last word in the title.

  • what did you mix with the resin

  • catalyst

  • Great tutorial. I hadn't considered using car wax as a release agent. I noticed that you had a lot of working time with the resin... What type of resin are you using? Thanks for the inspiration!

  • just plain unwaxed polyester layup resin. From FGI Australia.

  • this is the 1st time i can realy see how fiberglass work i can you please tell me how too make 1st step mold and the i could do what you just shoed me do i make it out off wood ?or what ? please show or tell me e-mail me thank you for your time anr keep it up please i will keep look for more off youe veido

  • i want to learn more a just got my first car so and i want to tune it thx man

  • thanks man!

this is a great video, it's given me confidence to have a go myself, i want to duplicate the body plastics from the Honda Pilot FL400R

  • no probs. Long plastics have huge flex, You should brace body plastics before taking moulds or you will have warped parts.

  • is it the heat from the resin curing that causes warping?

does fibreglass contract as it cures?

    thanks for the advice!

  • the plastics are not too big, it's plastic body work from the Honda Pilot FL400r, you know, the A.T.V. not the car, so i hope i have no probs!

  • Yes, heat from polyester resin will cause it to shrink or warp. Epoxy does not heat up and im not sure on vinylesters. But some car plastics will warp under there own weight, just not being on the car can put them out a bit. It would be ok for a little warp but its something you should? keep an eye on when moulding them.

atv plastics should be a prob. Just as long as your aware of it.

  • thanks alot that hella helped...im tryin to make a helmet from halo 3

  • The old Newbound plastercine.!

A trick i use it keeping it in a bucket, or esky of warm water.

Then it works like soft butter and the water dry's out very quick.. Then heat gun it with a disposable brush to smooth flats...

  • Interesting, ill try that.

  • Im going to try your trick with the talc rubbing into your skin.

I get massive itching on my wrists.....

Im doing a full car body at the moment.

Man what a job..... its been 3 years of spare moments.

Your video is one of the most helpful ones on the net for anyone learning ......Well done..

  • Ciao excuse are always myself I wanted to know the name of my film that eliminates the bubbles of air

  • Non capisco la sua domanda. Prova chiedere in italiano e mi si tradurrà.

  • Great vid bring on the rest...the text is a little hard to read but that could be my eyes!!

  • very cool trick

  • When you say a few layers of wax on the plug before flanging, is that wax and off again, repeat? How many layers is safe?

  • If the surface hasnt been waxed before then several layers.. so 7 times on and off. On a well used mould you can get away with an effective single layer(each layup). Remember you need to wait for gelcoat to fully cure (4-7 days) before it can be effectively releasable with just wax. Otherwise use PVA as well (on top) same goes with the top coat of a plug, wait for the primer/paint to fully dry/cure before you try and layup a mould.

  • where do you get the materials from?

  • I get my stuff from an Australian company, Fiberglass International. Sydney branch.

  • thanks!

  • why would you want a sub enclosure to flex ?

  • the negative mould (tooling) is what I want to flex... not the sub box itself.

  • oh ok..sorry for the misunderstanding

do you know any good places to get more detailed information on this topic...such as figuring out volume and things like that

  • try fiberglassforumsdotcom

  • Very interesting vid .Will look for your next one !! I want to make a hood scoop ..

  • Same here. Nice Vid. Thanks for all the molding explanation. But whatis the plug made off and how is it made to such a snug fit?

Is the plug designed by somebody else and also FG?

    Cheers from Holland.

  • plug was made by me and is made from fg too.

  • I'd be curious to see how you designed the plug into being a snug fit like that one obviously is.

  • I may make a howto on a simple once off sub box like this... when I find the time.

  • Pretty sure it's glassed in the car boot crevice itself, right?

  • yes, with some masking tape and some pva... to get the rear shape so its nice and snug.

  • Hey Punk28186

    Thanks for the video

Makes a lot of sense. Good to see time lapse too'

Keep up the great info on fibreglassing

    Lots of good info

    Cheers

    utooth

  • ok that last bit you donèt need to use that much clay really thats just stuped

  • lol, it would look like that. But this clay is reusable and never goes hard, so there is no reason not to use all of what you have available.

  • Ironic...

  • i dont know how much you know on this topic, but could the this sheet shown being pulled off the glass, be used in the making of a longboard, to reinforce the board but have it still have a flew to it? great vid btw

  • To reinforce a long board you would layup the fiberglass straight onto the board. Make sure you grind/sand back to fresh laminate/foam first and make sure there is no wax left of the surface at all.

  • Hey P,

Have all my supplies ordered from USComposites, should be here by next Thursday. What weight of chopstrand did you use to make the flexable flanging panel? Loks like the first 2 layers are a lighter grade than the third.

  • couple of 300gram layers (1oz) is enough. I think it was 2x225g +1x600g in the vid. The more you put the stiffer it gets. Two light layers is enough just to make a sealed panel without holes, max flex.

  • What is the roller that you use, and where can I get one?

  • Your in North America, try UScomposites.

  • very nice. very pragmatic just do it effective attitude.

  • You know pragmatic is exactly what im trying to achieve in everything I build. Grea compliment mate.

  • for the speaker opening you should have just made a flat plane across the lowest part of the opening, not have it stick out. Nitril gloves and long sleaves would be nice, but your young. The itchies will get you sooner or later.

  • I leave the hole open for a reason. Watch the layup vid to this and you will see. I make a single piece part from a two part mould via that hole. I use talc on any bare skin to avoid the itch. I like the talc also because it works as an antiperspirant, instead of sweating my ass off in longs. I explain all of these techniques in the sequential vids, please watch all the vids before commenting on my work pls.

  • dude u coulda done that such an easier way..!

  • done what easier?

  • Im gonna have to teach you a better way to make your flanges....Soooooooooo Easy you will cry!..... BUT, U cant show anyone!

  • Im interested, send me a private vid? heh

  • WILL DO...... Im waiting on my new video equipment since some BUTT-HOLE STOLE ALL MINE...... Have some other SUPER COOL STUFF TO SHOW YOU............... What town, country are you in again?

  • Im in Sydney, Australia now.

  • thats really hard fucking work

  • Fantastic. I'm just about to make some inlet manifold trumpets. I've made the plug and about to do the mould after i've done the mould i have to fill it with a 2 part moulding silicon to make a flexible plug (because of the shape to wrap the carbon fibre around. thanks again

  • ive made ram tubes before with a fiberglass mould. You dont need a rubber mould or a replug because of the taper.

  • They are curved and tapered in both directions and cant get a rigid plug or mould out of the trumpet even if it was 2 or 3 piece thats why i need the silicon male mould is needed. i used to get a fibreglass guy to make them. i would make the plug and send it to him then every time he did them his prices just kept going up. ive done abit of glass work over the years so doing these myself now. if you've got any ideas on the moulding i'd love to hear them.

  • Strange ram stacks, they shouldny have a bottleneck, even if you have to split the mold, I would do it female way, not male.

  • They dont have a bottleneck the shape and cross sectional area is correct trying to find the best way to manufacture them. the inside has to be smooth thats why im using the male mould. have you tried the female way with a balloon inside to expand the material out to the mould?

  • i would say a std female mould with vacuum bagging is your best bet. Use a very fine peel ply for a glossy inner finish.

  • Thanks a tone god bless you!

  • How would I go about making side skirts, spoilers and bumper molds?

  • same process. Your biggest problem will be mounting the copies back to the car. You should also reinforce long skinny plugs like side skirts so you dont take a mold of it flexing.

  • how do you make a plug?

  • Thats a very wide spread question. Make a plug how ever you can to get the original shape. Because your just using it to make the mould it can be made from anything, like solid polyurethane foam. Wood, metal, mortar, plaster etc

  • If I used hard metal (bondo), to smoothen the curves and surface for the plug would that be ok with the resin applied to the mold?

  • yes, thats fine. Body filler is good for getting a nice smooth finish for your mould.

  • I need to refraise that, you never put body filler into a negative mould (tooling), body filler to get the plug surface smooth so your mould will copy it.

  • riiiiiiite......

  • question:

what happend wiht my mold if i make the mold without using gelcoat?

  • Would be ok for one or two parts. The surface deteriorates very fast.

  • excellent well done, The mold is complexed and you showed all the means neccersary to get this all in alignment for the next process. Thank you very much for showing how this is done. HOPE YOUR NEXT VIDS show how this is finished off.

  • hi, tnkx for this video. If you make mold from two part (sometimes it is needed)..

    1) how you work with edges? How you remove extra stuff (leftovers from epoxy work?

    2) How you connect (imaginable) part A and B?

  • I dont really understand your questions, but ill give it a punt. 1.Flat plugs with a defined edge I usually use a large single piece of fiberglass sheeting to flange it. I use an angle grinder with a slitting disc to trim. 2. Strictly with polyester resin only (not epoxy) use 1.5-2.5% of part B.

  • 5 star bro...

thank you for making this demo

i learned a lot today just by watching ur videos

  • awesome!

IS fiberglass a strong/robust/flexible material? I have to make a round object in the form of a pseudosphere. What is a good way to make the mold?

    Thx!

  • You could make a pseudosphere on a wood lathe. You could then make a two part mould of it, flanging the center circle bit. You could make it with foam, but it wouldnt be very round.

  • Thx! the problem is, is that the pseudosphere is a little over half a meter in diameter. I basically want to make a duct for a propeller. Basically a Kort Nozzle duct. I am considering to build it with fiberglass.

How would you build the mold? it also has to be pretty strong.

    Thx!

  • polyurethane foam to get the shape you want, fiberglassing/bodyfiller to smooth it all out. Then make your mould from that.

  • Thanks punk28...very decent video...never thought of doing it that way and has solved alot on my problems...espcialy with the wax....just got to find some now..

    Thanks
