  • Neil gave out a ''black belt'' to Randy Couture in the cage after he'd choked a pro boxer with about 6 months MMA training. Make of that what you will.

  • @eltubster14 there are no belts in catch and neil doesnt teach bjj so he cant award anyone belt. Also randy is a great grappler but doesnt have a complete sub grappling game so therefore isnt a black belt standard even though he could hold almost any bjjer in the world to a draw.He wouldnt have the full repetoire of abjj black belt, top and bottom games.

  • @billysue2 fail of a post. Watch Couture vs Big Nog to see Randy's BJJ knowledge getting out of sub attempts and escaping from bad positions. Catch Wrestlers have just as much repertoire as BJJ guys they just do their stuff a bit differently as they are different philosophies on grappling.

  • BJJ and catch-wrestling are going to continue to feed off and learn from each other (as they have done for ages) and it's going to keep making both styles better.

I think eventually they'll just converge into one system - just with more options.

    Awesome.

  • cofeild, you don't deserve to be in the same room with melanson, or anyone involved in this sport. Go back to baseball or football, whatever you want, just get the fuck out of combat sports, you don't belong here.

  • melanson is a smart guy. got most of his knowledge from Karo and Gokor

  • yea neil melanson is sick. iv trained with robert drysdale and Scott Bieri but neil is the best. way waayy beter

  • @jackiechavez7 Wow! That's saying a lot! I was gonna go to Vegas and train at both places as well as Cobra Kai. Can't wait!

  • Great interview and explination.

  • Melanson is friggin huge, I wanna see some videos of what exactly he teaches

  • Neil Melanson is a smart dude, there should be more interviews with him. Thoroughly enjoyed this interview.

  • Wrestling from hold to hold -- or, in terms of catch, from hook to hook -- is something Tony Cecchine's Lost Art of Hooking was preaching over a decade ago. It's great that so many pro fighters these days have the wrestling background to be able to work with this philosophy; it's not about the submissions necessarily (though they can be made more efficient): it's about wrestling into and out of positions where to set up your submissions and catch them with a high percentage. That's catch.

  • @palindabomb +1, I've been training in catch wrestling for the past 3 months, and i have to say. I feel like i learn everything i've learned in BJJ and more. Other than highschool wrestling, I've never taken up a grappling style that works our positioning so much. GRRREEEEAT shit, plus the submissions are badass! V locks, neck cranks, and double wrist locks ALL DAY!!!

  • Couture isnt even top 10 and neither is Vera.

    Coleman is not top 100.

  • @Stigmableedingblack don't get caught up in rankings, the fact of the matter is that Randy has the ability to beat any man,in any weight class, on any given day. Vera is not very good, he should go to k1.

  • this douche is so full of himself, seriously Randy would submit Vera? this guy is delusional

  • vera champ someday? hell no. Randy has looked bad against top fighters. Got beat by brock, nog and could barely do anything with vera. Randy only looks good against mid level fighters.

  • "It's not about me and who I am, it's about the information."

    I love it.

  • wrong top UFC fighters

    Shogun

    A. Silva

    BJ Penn

    GSP

    Lesnar

Machida- maybe his win was bull even he said he should have lost the belt

  • Yeah you are right: "wrong top UFC fighters" lol. How can you put Lesnar on the list? He has only fought 3 guys and 1 guy twice. Lesnar potentially can be a top UFC fighter but you give him too credit by saying he is a top fighter.

  • @coralspringsmsheen

did machida really say that he should have lost the video , can you show me a video proving that , actually he said watch the fight and turn the sund off in order to not listen to joe rogger and you would see i was the legitime winner

  • Randy vs jon jones that a dream match iight there

  • u mean jon the snitch jones?

  • JOn Jones by death

  • Yea that would be pretty sweet, so would jon jones v phil davis (the pennstate national champ 2008). Phil Davis looked pretty good for his debut at ufc 109.

  • I don't think Randy is a top 5 fighter. Randy has to fight Jardine, T. Silva, Rampage, etc. before you call him a top five LWH contender. Of all time, Randy is a top 10 fighter but his struggle with Vera clearly shows it will be a tough ride to the top. In any case, I am still a fan of Randy and think he is great for a 46 year old guy. Makes you wanna go and exercise to the soundtrack of Rocky! lol.

    Top 5 UFC fighters:

    A. Silva

    GSP

    B.J. Penn

    Machida

Close call between a few others.

  • Don't they mean top 5 in the 205 division? Not in the whole ufc?

  • No, Dana said Randy is a top 5 fighter in the UFC, which is Dana's justification for Randy if Randy gets a title shot without having to fight a couple of other LHWs. My point is that Randy is not a top 5 UFC OR LHW fighter because he has not proved it yet. Give Randy a couple more fights before the title bout.

  • I see, I agree with you, I just think he wants to market randy as much as possible since he is not getting any younger... but he definetly need a few more fights against some top LHW like rashad, silva, nate etc.
