Were it not for nuclear bombs WW3 WOULD have happened, and it would’ve either been the bloodiest war of all time, or we would now be living in the Soviet Union, or both.
Whichever way you look at it, the nuclear bomb (the H-Bomb in particular) is the greatest contributor to world peace of any military weapon ever developed. In deserves a Nobel peace prize...
Man, the Brits really knew how to do basic civil defense. Too bad Americans are too intellectually lazy to take even the most basic steps. We joke about duck and cover, but if it ever came down to it, that basic drill alone would save 10's of thousands from flying glass and blindness. This level of civil defense is just beyond the pale for Americans.
"We who grew up tall and proud - in the shadow of the Mushroom Cloud" - film glosses over the playground tribal insanitity which created the Cold War, purely by contemporary Politicians - those same politicians (Maggie Thatcher included) being snug and very comfortable in their RSGs when the bombs came - many of those outside being ..toast. I do not think anyone deserves praise for an episode which blighted a complete generation ....
this wasn't for the general public, but to give the UKWMO people the impression that they were capable of doing more than putting their heads between their legs...
"We've got an almost complete picture of the situation except for a few late arrivals like this one here. [don't mention the town too obviously]" "Oh, we've regained contact with a post, well that's something! [Don't mention London anybody.]"
good job solider going out into the radiation filled wasteland with no protection.. heres your medal good luck with your lymphoma you will develop in a few days.
radiation reading:4 rotogens per hours, he was out there for half an hour, thats 2 rotogens. 2 rotogens is not deadly, might provide some light nausa but nothing severe and is recoverable.
Not exactly mindless. There was a great deal of underestimation at the time and the public needed some reassurance in the face of a weapon that cannot be fought.
it can stil happen, be on guard. the bomb is stil around

It wasn't mindless in the bomber war, when this film was made. Even if the odds were low, something had to be done.

@gab21113 This was early 1960s, surely they were using rockets as much as relying upon 'Bear' heavy bombers?

Fallout isn't that powerful. A dose of 500 rontgens/hr is fatal. Around 4? good luck with it even harming you.

Yes, because if they had been given the full and frank facts they might have protested in order to survive?

Mindless propaganda. Historically, deeply relevant.
