  • Schubert: I think this piece might be too hard for the accompanist.

Liszt: It's okay, I think I've figured out a way to fix it.

    Schubert: Oh, thank god. How?

    Liszt: By making it harder.

    Schubert: That's gr- ...Wait. What?

  • @BenMcCormack91 Actually, I found the accompanist version harder. It has more octaves and you get more of a break in parts with the Liszt transcriptions IMHO.

  • is it just me or does this piano arrangement sound like something stephen foster would have come up with?

  • nice!

  • I love how he plays and he's extremely accurate, precise, and clear all at the same time. Truly amazing..

  • I prefer it with the voice part.

  • WAR........TOD!!!

  • very good, but personally i feel he takes a bit to much liberties with the tempo, particularily when the erlkonig is singing

  • Haha you should hear Hoffmann's 1903 recording then.

  • definitely my favorite recording, does anyone know a good place to get the sheet music for this? cause iv only been able to find an easier/simlified version for piano

  • Dover publications have produced quite a few books of my favourites - I've got a few of Chopin. But there's also a few volumes of Liszt's transcriptions of Schubert's songs [because he transcribed so many of them!!]. The volume I've got has the 'Erlkonig' transcription as well as the 'Ave Maria'. Hope this helps :-)

  • i like how the tempo is taken a little bit slower. While Kissin probably could play the piece a whole lot faster, he decided not to sacrifice clarity for speed. this is my favorite, too.

  • what are you talking about? he isn't playing it slow at all! He's actually playing the correct speed if not a bit faster!

  • oh, please don't misunderstand me. I didn't mean to say that he's taking the piece slowly in any absolute sense. I was merely comparing his interpretation of the piece to that of other pianists (also on youtube) who take the 'presto agitato' tempo marking to heart and sacrifice both clarity and musicality for it. Kissin could have done that, but he didn't, and I was remarking on that. If there was an implied criticism, I apologise for not being clear.

  • best. love it
