The top of pilot mountain has always looked unique to me. The only problem is that it is on the county lines of stokes and surry county. Why that is a problem is because I live in eastern Stokes County.
I remember me and my mom last year went on a really nice road trip it was long but worth it. We went from my cousin's house in mooresville to virginia to pilot mountain, we got some bbq then went to hanging rock. They have a nice little nature exhibit.
Thank you for a lovely reminder of where I spent my youth. I grew up in Winston-Salem, but every fall my father would load the family station wagon and take us all on a day trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway. I remember stopping for apples, various country stores and always stopping at Cumberland Gap. We'd eventually arrive at Pilot Mountain and spend a few hours there.
My home is now in Massachusetts, so I really enjoy seeing videos like this.
Thanks Doc, I am afraid my climbing days are past, we drove up last year and walked out to the pinnacle, but more than being up there, you can see this mountain from far away on all sides, even from up in Virginia, it sits alone in a vast flat land area of NC.
The icon photo is from the AT, which was my last climb up Mount LaConte in Tennessee
From the Department of Geological, Environmental & Marine Sciences The top of Pilot Mountain, known as the Big Pinnacle, is a layer of gleaming white quartzite 200-feet thick. The quartzite represents a beach that existed in western North Carolina almost one billion years ago.
Thanks Daniel, we pass this area on occasion and I thought when I saw the clouds moving over it I would just stop and watch, then I thought I might as well set the camera up and let it record while I watched.
thanks im looking at piolt mountain right now i live right beside it

Nothing like zipping through Bethania, grabbing Northbound 52 and spending a couple hours tramping around Pilot Mountain.
Maybe this can help some of those unlucky enough to live elsewhere understand that, but I doubt it. :D
Oh, and I love this view, the usual one for me, unless I'm headed to the mountain, is the peak you get on Reynolda Road. Nice video!

what type of rock is Mount Pilot made of? It looks like limestone from the few seconds that I saw on the video.
