Nice footage! I swear as soon as I saw the very first scene... I was like this looks like..... Small town, Ontario. Kitchener came to mind. Just the street reminded me of it.
Then I saw Tiger Discount I was like wow..... then I saw Grimsby. Good job!
This looks like crap on ANY screen including my computer. A canon HV40 shoots better pictures than this and costs $700 new, a rebel t2i shoots better tripod shots. You could have either and still have 1.5k to throw at lens, rigging, and lights.
The shots where the lighting is perfect are really incredible. Some of them could almost pass for pro quality. I can't wait to get one of these cameras.
Hey I dont know if this is too late but i own a Sony HVR a1u, it uses a mini dv tape or HDV tape BUT it has USB ports for the picture capturing (but its just less then a 1mega pixel) because of how the resolution works... BUT it has firewire which interfaces with almost any good editing software, Got any more questions, I'll be happy to answer them, or at least try.
I'm just starting out with this camera. Low light conditions give me problems. I'm going to shoot at Lick Observatory. Other than adjusting my exposure, are there any other options for letting in more light,
There are other options for letting in more light such as adjusting the shutter speed... But the longer your shutter is open for the slower the image. So you will get a really slow jerky looking image. which may not be what you want. If you get the chance light your scene. You will be happy (that's if you know how to light) Lighting can be slightly complicated but don't be too worried by it. Im sure there are great tutorials online, I hope the question was still relevant and it helped you.
NOW this is a low light test.. i get tired of people doing low light tests and they be in the house with lights on. AT 0:25 there was little NOISE not tooo bad, but u probably had the db up higher than it needed to be. for 7 minimum illumination the hvr a1u is good, I have this as my choice now because i don't have enough for the V1U with 24p and 3 CMOS
I use the "Sony PHDVM-63DM Digital Master Tapes" I find It works the best with this camera. Its a very small camera but packs a punch. The JVC HD tapes are also very good.
personally I don't really trust the low end consumer hard drive cameras...yet. Only because I have shot with a couple ones and I almost always had a problem importing the raw files onto the computer.
It also really depends on what you are going to use the camera for. If you want a nice picture and a reliable/fairly cheap camera go with the A1U. The HD tapes can be re-used a couple times. I think Its defiantly worth the coin. The A1U also shoot SD on standard MINI DV tapes and shoots a very nice picture.
@MikeRilstone I would NEVER re-use tapes, it is just a really bad idea and asking for problems. Tapes are so cheap when you really break it down that it isn't worth loosing irreplacable footage due to saving a couple bucks. It also dirties the tape heads and can mess them up if you use reused tapes.
yeah i thought it might of been, its hard to do it with midshots and long shots, should try doing some extreme closeups and close ups with focus pulls of the subject you're shooting, i think it would suit the music and the style you're going for. im sorry if you got the impression i was slating your work, it's good it's just that i think it would work better if you had the camera on a tripod where you weren't following your subject. hope you understand what i mean
no worries i always like advice. i want the shaky look but ill probably go with a steady cam. for this video i was interested mainly what kind of in camera looks i could achieve before color correction in post. luckily i just met somebody in my town with a full body steady cam rig so its going to cost me nothing lol(Y)
A lot of on the fields news correspondents use this cam cause of the quality and somewhat ruggedness of it. If you tweak the sharpness and color settings you can reduce the amount of noise under low lighting conditions. I love this camera. It's actually cheap enough now that i can get a couple more so i can do multi cam shoots and retain same image quality across the production.
Man all i hear about this cam is how it doesn't work well in low light? thats ridiculous, i think this looks hella good ! mine gets here tomorrow i'm so excited i can't wait :)
I'm a VJ-journalist and I would like to hear if the camera is good enough for short news, web-tv, low budget docs, etc. I have a PD150 but I'm tired of the scals when I do 16:9.
the A1U would be a great upgrade from the 150 and for what you want to use it for im sure it would meet your needs. It shoots 1080i and as you can see in this test footage it does very well in low light. you can pick one up now for just over $2000.
I also bought a wide angle for my camera which looks very sweet in HD
I just got one used yesterday for $300...the guy had it for 2months...it had 20hrs on the drum! I dunno if I got ripped off paying so much for it!

damn that's a bit of a kick in the balls...
I was hoping it would take flash cards. USB, DVD, or hard drive...
How much are each tape? And how much time can they hold?
Also, how easy is it to transfer to PC/MAC?
Many thanks

Scratch that, I found out myself :)
What do you think, should I go for this or a small camcorder with a hard drive? :(
Are you sure you can't record to SD?

Is this 24 film mode? Which filters did you use and how did you get your low light shots so clear?

no i was shooting 29.97 but my camera does have that option. The A1U is great for shooting in low light without becoming grainy though
