thats because linux isn't a bsd variant, it legally can't be. linux can look and operate exactly like mac pixel per pixel, so the way it looks is not a valid argument. its the most stable OS, which is why the heaviest trafficked servers in the world, such as google and youtube, use it and not macs. and wtf does "compatibility with class" mean? thats like a dickhead way of saying "i paid more money for my product so i'm an elitist". fyi, wine is heavily funded by mac users
Mac is NOT based off of Linux in any way. OS X was and still is based off BSD. Mac is a certified Unix OS. Maybe you should read more about Mac and Linux and get your shit straight before you tell someone else to.
@halcncod A lot of people outside the USE pronounce it LINE-UCKS, but in the USA most people call it LIN (like the first syllable in Linear) - ICKS. The guy who mad it was named Linus Torvalds (IDK how to pronounce it, and Linux is a combination of Linux and Unix (Pronounced like eunuch with an s at the end), so it definetly ends with the "icks sound", so I guess we Americans pronounced it right for once.
@aminy23 what? fuck your self, dick head. I've heard Linux Torvalds himself pronounce it, AND IT'S NOT THE FUCKING WAY THIS DICK HEAD IN THE VIDEO PRONOUNCES IT, IT'S lin (lin as in linsey) - ucks, linucks, linux.
@halcncod If you read my comment, you would notice that i said people in the USA call it LIN (Like linear or Lindsay)-ICKS, and then I said I guess people in the USA pronounce it right. Linux is a combination of Linus and UNIX, so it definitely ends in the -ICKS/UCKS sound. My main point is that I have heard it pronounced both ways, so this guy is saying it how other people in his region would say it. It is like how Americans and Brits pronounce potato, tomato, and aluminum differently.
no, they aren't. mac kernels are lightly bsd based. linux is unix-like. macs are compatible with many linux programs, but its kernel and the way it operates isn't similar to linux. besides, mac was released before linux, so how do you explain that?
mac used bsd in the begainning, and now their kernels are linux, and i know whats linux :) ofcourse kernels wont act the same, yahoo servers and google servers are unix :) do they act the same? hell no:) google's new os and ubuntu are linux but they are not acting the same, they had to do some changes :) read more about mac and linux
where are you getting any of this information from? apple has never used linux, if they did, linux would have a LOT more software support. the folder heirachy, kernel, and executable formats alone are enough proof that macs are not linux based. google uses linux, not unix, and yahoo uses windows servers which is why microsoft wants them and not google. google's new os doesn't act lke any os because its not supposed to, but it is linux. i'll read w/e your sources are, but i'm sure they're wrong
I would so switch over fully to ubuntu but i need some of my apps like photoshop cs4 (dont give me that gimp crap i need photoshop) and such other apps. I do love alot of its alternatives like openoffice i now even use on my windows machine, i would use wubi but it is slow on my other laptop but in a couple weeks im getting the ubuntu cd :D cant wait

why do linux/open source guys always attack windows and microsoft? I like and use both, they have different purposes and different strengths. linux is more adaptable and will do almost everything but i am a gamer and use windows for games, and the internet because google chrome is only for windows.
There are lot of FREE, OPEN SOURCE games out there (such as Sauerbrauten og Nexuiz or warsow or Americas Army or... (those are the best i've tried out), and they all run on both Windows and Linux.
The only problem there should be to this kind of games is your GFX-card manufactor. Niether ATI/AMD or nVidia are good at doing great updates for their drivers, but i've managed to do a lot of cool things in Linux with my nVidia Geforce 9800 GTS
But look how old Microsoft Windows is...its one of the oldest themes possible, shouldn't we be grateful for even having an idea..because I don't think this would of been here
I really wish I liked Linux... I've tried using it many many times. I can't count how many times I've installed it... But I always go back to Windows. It's just so much easier to fix, myself, since I know my way around it.
Gaming is not Linux's problem, and there are emulators which are capable of running much mainstream games. Office sucks anyways and you better use OpenOffice, and most people don't need the terminal, not in Ubuntu atleast..
I play lots of games on Linux. And I don't care about Microsoft Office, OpenOffice 3 is great. You don't need to be an expert at anything and you don't need to use a terminal. Excellent performance and reliability. No viruses, no spyware.
You are the one with the dilusion that everything you think is good is something everbody else thinks is good. Let me wake you up though. The average joe will by fact have more headaches over Linux then over Windows.
"You are the one with the dilusion that everything you think is good is something everbody else thinks is good"
Um, no that would be you.
"The average joe will by fact have more headaches over Linux then over Windows."
Um, no, I've sold lots of Ubuntu systems to people who have never used anything but Windows. Not one has asked for Windows to be installed, though the offer was there if they didn't like Ubuntu. They have nothing like the problems they had with Windows.
I've been running Fedora on my 2003-vintage Athlon 64 machine for a year-and-a-half now and I absolutely love Linux! Reboots are rare indeed and the software is free! IMO Linux is much superior with the exception of some driver compatibility/availability (getting much better though) but this is usually due to the OEM's failure to provide.
Yep Windows it's more home user who don't know much bout software Linux give security MUCH MORE and FLEXIBILITY plus a LOT LESS PC usage and Memory use
Lmao I like the way you used old versions of Windows so it could be overshadowed by the Linux bit. The fact of the matter is, Microsoft is far superior to Linux. You just boned yourself by not stating anything better on Linux than Microsoft.
I feel sorry for you. I am hundred percent sure that you never gave linux a serious shot... you're really missing out. Please don't be so ignorant, its for your own benefit. Thanks!
What community are you involved in? Ever try reading a Linux forum? I've been running Ubuntu for a year now and I've also recently used Mandriva and OpenSuse. Just because Linux works flawlessly for some doesn't mean it isn't hell for others.
"Don't waste processing power"? This guy is kidding, right? Linux is a resource hog on my box. My box is 5 years old, and WinXP runs far smoother and with far fewer resources than Ubuntu.
Maybe Vista can't compete, but XP blows linux away in my experience. System Monitor alone uses 7% cpu while Windows task manager uses 1-2%. And firefox.............omg....bad in windows, frelling horrible in Linux.
your story can only be true if there is somehow some hardware that linux has problems with. Otherwise linux is far more lean that XP. That is a fact. Period.
There's a fair amount of hardware that Linux does not support or has issues with; everybody knows that. As far as being more lean.......tell it to my resources. Linux is not efficient compared to XP.
"There's a fair amount of hardware that Linux does not support or has issues with; everybody knows that."
Linux supports more hardware than Vista and runs on more platforms than any other operating system.
"As far as being more lean.......tell it to my resources. Linux is not efficient compared to XP."
GNU/Linux is far more efficient than Windows XP. I used to run Kubuntu on an Athlon 2800 with 256MB of RAM and it was fine, while Windows XP crawled. No tweaks.
I've always wanted to get a fully up and running linux distro working on my PC, but its just so much hassle for me to get it working, it was a year or 2 since I tried, has much changed? Does drivers install properly now as I want to give it ago again, any suggestions?
Well I installed Ubuntu 7.10 with VMware. I thought my graphics driver card was not chosen corectly, so I changed that in the configuration. Since then ubuntu isn't readable anymore (I only see lines). Can't put it back. Then installed Ubuntu 8.04. If I want to add a program, Ubuntu will crash... Brand new installation, nothing done with it...
My PC never crashes!
I like Linux like I like windows. Windows IS a great OS. I wanted to use Linux as alternative, but it crashes all the time.
That is because the virtual machine is no good. I think, Linux is not crash proof, in my case is the flash player always mess thing up. Yes, my previous Fedora Core 6 is very buggy. But in most case I reboot the system, and everything become normal again. In XP, you may lost something, and cause some program unable to run. In 98, was even worse, I could lost my boot partition without any reason.
I agree with you. I just want to say Microsoft haters see things black and white. Like Linux never crashes, Mac never crashes and Microsoft is a buggy system with a bluescreen every minute while you are trying to remove the latest virusses. I know a Mac owner with a Mac that crashes quite often. I had problems too with Ubuntu while it was installed on my old computer.
And my Windows does the opposite your Windows does ;). Ubuntu crashes more for some reason then XP, Vista never crashed. In fact you are confirming my theory ;)...
I'm running Ubuntu 7.04, OpenSUSE 10.3, and PCLinuxOS 2007 as virtual machines in Parallels. In VMWare Fusion, I couldn't install any Linux distro. So I tried Parallels, and all three distros are working perfectly.
The reason is because I'm running them on my Mac and I'd rather be able to have as many distros as I'd like rather than simply sticking with one or two - and running live CDs for me has been sluggish, yet at the same time, I don't want to install then find I'm unhappy with it. If i don't want a dist. anymore, I juste ask Parallels to delete it which allows for immediate removal of ALL related files, including the ISO core. There are some minor side effects but I've been able to work around them.
why do you need to use virtual machines? give it some space and dual boot it? or am I missing something?
also Linux has never been about fancy graphics, beryl is a nice thing but linux power comes from its stability. just to say that apache on a linux machine are known for having the longest uptime as servers!
lol Linux is a Alt next to Windows for the newbies ( Linus Torvalt announced it himself )
its obviously so which Operating system works better, and doesn't crash so much as Linux, Linux its interface crashes alot of times , im not seeing that putted in the movie , now do i?
Yep, they do crash, but is your browser using adobe flash player? If you do, take it out! Things may get better. Firefox is also very problematic, try opera. But since Firefox have not let me down after I update the os, I will keep it, but switch to another flash player.
Windows is definitely worse with crashes, but XP is still far better than the old Win95/98. With XP, I would average only about 3-5 BSOD's a year, vs. 10/day with Win98.
I have had some issues with Ubuntu, and now with Hardy, more issues. I've had to actually reboot one time, as logging out wouldn't fix it. I've had a few more times where I had to log out to fix something, and I have had numerous app crashes, but still far better than Win98, but about neck and neck with WinXP on app crashes.
the only problem is when the majority of the world is using microsoft... its difficult to use another OS... unless microsoft office works on linux and other stuff created in partner with microsoft
