I remember first finding this back in 2007. I just got an ipod and was going on a long roadtrip around Texas. I downloaded a whole bunch of random bands, put it on random in San Antonio early morning, and this came up. To sum it up, 90% of the trip was mission of burma. I was so blown away
Agreed Dingle. Lived in JP and Beantown the same time. No stress, no strife. Imagine what we've given up with the corporate newspeak. And, I'm 57. Looking at this free band- the raw talent, and comparing it to the schmuh that gets played now... oh, just fuck it.
When you catch MOB live, this song just leaps out at you as being different and timeless compared to all of their other great material. Some bands were meant to play certain tunes even if the tune is musically simple -- The Ramones being a prime example.
.
Rest assured that in 100 years 15 year olds will be debating the merits of this song on the future version of YouTube 22nd C.
.
Title refers to "When I hear of culture..." quote from Hanns Johst's play written in 1933 Germany.
Graham Coxon's cover is very nice. It would be near impossible to top MOB, but Graham came closer than Moby or anyone else. His cover is pretty badass.
I don't like Moby. And I hate censorship, even if the "artist" does it himself.
But, I have to give credit for Moby's cover of this song. MOB would benefit from having the song done with top of line audio/visual on a well shot video.
We are polishing the brass on the Titanic, its about the song, first and foremost.
And like or don't, strong production values on a vid are important.
MOBY was never part of Mission Of Burma. From Allmusic: Born Richard Melville Hall, Moby received his nickname as a child; it derives from the fact that Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick, is his great-great grand uncle.
I hate to say it, but Mission of Burma is one of those bands that you have to "be there" to actually get them. The show is where they shine. You have to be immersed in their show. If we're talking this recording versus Moby's, I have to say that this recording makes me feel oddly unsatisfied after listening to Moby's. His version is just so cut loose and balls out, whereas this seem awkwardly controlled in a swaggering manner.
Look, Moby has never done anything original in his life. He just rides on other people's coat-tails in every way shape and form. You just have (unfortunately) heard his half-assed attempt at this song before you heard it done by people who actually know what the hell they're doing... ;-)
@BerryCinnamon76 I love M.O.B. .....I'd never heard Moby's cover until just now. You're right, he does a great job. I can't say one is better than the other though. They are both great. Moby's might be cleaner and louder, but I feel M.O.B.'s has more heart and soul. I do like the guitar at 2:22 in Moby's version, where he added a little background vocal...sounds hot.
Oh yeah, I agree. Mission of Burma's version is great and it certainly is their song I can't take that away from them. And I respect your opinion. I've just always felt that Moby played it the way the song (to me) was meant to sound. I'm certainly not the biggest Moby fan either, however "Animal Rights" is one of my favorite alt rock albums ever.
I lived in Boston during Burma's first life and I saw them live more times than I can count (somewhere between 75 and 100 is my estimate).
For three years if MoB was playing in a club I'd be there. I saw their farewell show at the Bradford Ballroom and 1983 and it was a bittersweet moment. A whole community of Burmaheads had sprung up in Boston over those three years and it was the end of the road. I wish them well in their second life...the first one was unforgettable.
yep! when i saw them, they played my friends' livingroom. now they're doing concert arena type shows playing that power pop-esque rant that everyone on myspace digs. sold out, burned out, they're just not "punk" anymore is all.
@Icantunderstandyou They aren't sell outs, sure there style changed whatever. They still have the same message behind there songs, as long as the message remains and they don't stray to far from their original sound they aren't sell outs!! Green Day are sell outs Anti-Flag is far from being a bunch of sell outs.
1st heard and saw Burma as a H.S. kid in early 80's Boston/Jamaica Plain and have never forgotten them. It was a wild time to grow up in. Cops didn't bother you. Drinking age was 18. People smoked everywhere, including inside at work. Surveillance technology almost non-existent. Proper I.D.'s optional. No internet or 300 cable channels; most people actually went out to clubs and bars on a regular basis. A more relaxed time and place than 2009. You don't know what you got til it's gone.
@torgosassistant Yes this was one of many pivotal bands from that area in the 80's. Didn't they also evolve (or devolve as the case may be)into Birdsongs of the Mesozoic? By the way I cracked up when I saw "torgosassistant"!You are referencing "Manos-the Hands of Fate" right?Would the master approve of Torgo's assistant...I wonder...ha ha. Thanks.

A long time fan. I miss these guys. Did get to see them a few years ago at The Grog Shop in Cleveland.....that's when i reach for my revolver....f'ing eh this song is brilliant!
I love the song and Im not a fascist- not saying they are either. The lyrics, combined with the quote, suggest to me a song about fascism thats all- why a a young nihilistc man would resort to force
I was offerign the guy who originally posed the question the chance to think for himself, instead of telling him outright what to think. This is why I used the word "possibly" and posed it as a question. a la the Scoratic method.
Another baseless assumption. Why are you so quick to judge? Notice throughout this argument I haven't resorted to the use of personal attacks. Why do you express so much anger toward someone you don't even now? I harbor none towards you. It's not even clear what it is I did to upset you in the first place.
I have never had a problem with the ad hominem when it's been earned by the recipient. You're a prick know it all who presumes to get socratic with strangers on the internerd, again please go drink the hemlock
I don't claim intellectual superiority to anyone. If it comes across that way... well, you can kiss my ass. I only mentioned Socratic method in the first place was to explain my initial comment that apparently got your panties in a bunch. Your resort to ad hominem does nothing to support your case. And you sir engage in hyprocracy when calling me out for "presuming to get X with strangers on the 'internerd.'"
Keep digging that dipshit trench you're standing in buddy, you know whether you do or don't; be sure to refrain from ever claiming intellectual superiority until you can master such challenging grade six words like, "hypocrisy"
Find the dial in your brain that's labeled "suck" and turn it back a few notches from all the way to on.
Uh, oh resorting to pointing out misspelled words; this is my signal to pull out. You must live a very sad and only life to be this upset about nothing.
You also apparently give yourself credit when none is due. Here's reality, I've never been upset what I've said is that you're an idiot in response to your holier than thou attempt at justifying your apparent taste for edifying the sodden masses of youtube with your Socratic dialogues.
Here's a newsflash, your response painted you now and forever to be a prat, then you clearly act the part of what those in the East Coast like to call a "whingey baby" better than most when you're called on it.
JrFly, don't you get it that you are feeding a useless thing here? look at his name, fake.get into the sun, leave that wanker,to himself.waste of time.

Hey guys I think you might be a lil confused as far as MOB starting out in southie. You see, Boston has the South End and South Boston (Southie) 2 different places. I would say that they had rehearsal space in the south end.
Just saw MoB for the first time in 26 years the other night....they were incredibly great...better than I remember them, probably because I've come to understand the complexity and density of their playing more than when I was a kid.
i was readin the comments. i lived in southie durin punk's blast and there was NO punk scene in southie, ya had to go to kenmore square (the rat) financial district (cantones) and too many clubs in cambridge to name. NOB was and is a GREAT band who influenced more people than we will ever know.
I know Clint too...we go to the same church. Though I was an MoB fan back in the early 80's, I didn't realize the Clint from church was the same Clint from MoB until the church secretary posted a NYTimes Arts Section front page review of a reunion show with Clint's name highlighted, just like all the other local newspaper clippings that get hung in church offices....I nearly fell over dead.
for knowing so much about music, you'd know that grunge was a term invented by rolling stone. If you want to know about punk, get beyond the pistols. PiL was at least ten times better, the pistols were just sensationalists would signed to EMI before anyone really knew of them. They might as well be journey.
That's the problem...anyone can post anything. That's also the good things too in this bizarro world. And halifuckinfan, if you should see Santa be sure and tell him SATAN SATAN SATAN
music is different now man you can look at it as a terible era for music but the 80's were the same way.....on a superficial level the 80's sucked...but minor threat, the dead kennadies and black flag all came from the 80's....the 2000s have good stuff you just have to look beyond what pop radio is playing to find it
punk here in the states wasent the movement it was in the uk....im only 16 so its not somthing i lived through but punk devided the uk it was a phase here...grunge killed the 80's efectively and was more of a social movement....good boston band here though
its unheard of for an act these days to use actual instruments- let alone any real feeling or emotion beyond greed (rap) or self pity (what passes for mdern rock).
yes i agree small venues are better your in the bands face you see just a bit more.i have been to big venues and had a great time to ,i just lick small venues .denonscrowley
Great song but you've got to hate seeing punk and post-punk bands perform like this. I've been to plenty of shows for older bands like this that end up being disappointing because they're low energy and full of fans who just listened to the records for years wanting to hear their favorite song. It's very un-punk. All the best shows I've ever been to are in intimate, small venues. I saw the Bishop brothers of Sun City Girls fame recently with a crowd of about 30 people and it was amazing.
You're an idiot. Rotten was London Irish from Finsbury Park, Jones & Cook were from Shepherd's Bush, Vicious was the son of a junkie hippie on welfare. Not that it makes a difference as far as the music goes, but the Pistols were from the most dismal working class backgrounds imaginable. You're probably just some American suburban middle class twat anyway, trying to act "street." Wank.
Orchid I have to agree, although there are some great UK punk bands (Fuck the pistols) like the Clash, the Jam, GBH, US bands invented punk and hardcore...grogfrog should put Nevermind the Bollocks on and crawl back into his burrow.
wow, thanks for looking way to far into my comment. America is home to most of the cream when it comes to punk, historically but you have to give them credit for helping spread the ideology. Considering the UK had a lot more successful (mainstream wise) bands than the US up until MTV ruined the whole thing.
Wikipedia says that Roger Miller is From Michigan and i think one of them is from Waltham. What did it say? I never heard anything about the punk scene in southie, I think it was around Kenmore sq and Allston.
Well, I cannot say where the members were born, because I don't know about that, but the band (according to my memory) was formed in southie. Which really just means, they jammed in a spot there anyway. I really don't care, i just like the music.
The punk scene in Boston was in a lot of different places: The Rat, Cantone's, Chet's Last Call, The Channel, loft parties in the South End, etc. It was more about clubs that booked punk bands than any specific geographical location.
Other Boston music venues active around the time Burma was coming up: The Underground, The Main Act, The Club, The Space, InnSquare Men's Bar, E Street Gallery, Punkt/Data Gallery, Boston Film Video Foundation (BFVF), Fengate Ballroom, Streets, Mass Art, Spit and Metro.
I'm 2 and a half and I listen to this instead of that doodlebobs mainstream shit

When you see MOB live, their material is all awesome, hard, rocking, authentic.
Then they play this song, and it is just lightyears more timeless than the rest of their catalog. Only song I know of with a bass solo in the bridge.
Great bands have a certain chemistry, whereby they were meant to play certain songs, and they get elevated to greatness and timelessness.
Revolver is that song for MOB.
In 100 years, it will be on their version of YouTube.

Totally uncalled for, Mr. fake.
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
honestly, it'd probably make the world a better place if you did
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
Such a harsh judgment for someone you don't even know.
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
thus far I know you're a whiner and the world has enough of them
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
that statement does not jive with reality.
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
yeah most people generally think they're cooler than they are, I shouldn't be surprised you're no exception
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
Another baseless assumption. Why are you so quick to judge? Notice throughout this argument I haven't resorted to the use of personal attacks. Why do you express so much anger toward someone you don't even now? I harbor none towards you. It's not even clear what it is I did to upset you in the first place.
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
I have never had a problem with the ad hominem when it's been earned by the recipient. You're a prick know it all who presumes to get socratic with strangers on the internerd, again please go drink the hemlock
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
I don't claim intellectual superiority to anyone. If it comes across that way... well, you can kiss my ass. I only mentioned Socratic method in the first place was to explain my initial comment that apparently got your panties in a bunch. Your resort to ad hominem does nothing to support your case. And you sir engage in hyprocracy when calling me out for "presuming to get X with strangers on the 'internerd.'"
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
Keep digging that dipshit trench you're standing in buddy, you know whether you do or don't; be sure to refrain from ever claiming intellectual superiority until you can master such challenging grade six words like, "hypocrisy"
Find the dial in your brain that's labeled "suck" and turn it back a few notches from all the way to on.
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
Uh, oh resorting to pointing out misspelled words; this is my signal to pull out. You must live a very sad and only life to be this upset about nothing.
JrFLYnnIV 2 years ago
You also apparently give yourself credit when none is due. Here's reality, I've never been upset what I've said is that you're an idiot in response to your holier than thou attempt at justifying your apparent taste for edifying the sodden masses of youtube with your Socratic dialogues.
Here's a newsflash, your response painted you now and forever to be a prat, then you clearly act the part of what those in the East Coast like to call a "whingey baby" better than most when you're called on it.

JrFly, don't you get it that you are feeding a useless thing here? look at his name, fake.get into the sun, leave that wanker,to himself.waste of time.

a) I get plenty of sun
b) I suggest you re-read this because all I did was call a turd out on a failure to wipe.
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
entirelyfake 52 year old Costa-rican, the sun-advice was for JrFLY.and ehm calling out aturn is allways done by another turd. You really think I will re-read all the utter crap on the previous pages? And dont start anything with me dont give a f*ck, was merely trying to get your haterkid *sses outta here:)
moe17moe 2 years ago
52yr old costa rican, is that what my profile says? I thought I said I lived in Djibouti but meh it's all lies anyways.
Don't read it then, I don't care, I'm telling him he's a turd till he goes and flushes himself from my sight.
entirelyfakename 2 years ago
Yes, in my eyes you are the lowest form of human life a self serving internet troll, you're correct.

Hey guys I think you might be a lil confused as far as MOB starting out in southie. You see, Boston has the South End and South Boston (Southie) 2 different places. I would say that they had rehearsal space in the south end.
familyman14 3 years ago
I was in Boston during the peak punk mid 70's/early 80's and the downtown scene was terrific-Who remembers SPIT !!
woonsocketrocket 3 years ago
Just saw MoB for the first time in 26 years the other night....they were incredibly great...better than I remember them, probably because I've come to understand the complexity and density of their playing more than when I was a kid.
rpasley 3 years ago
i was readin the comments. i lived in southie durin punk's blast and there was NO punk scene in southie, ya had to go to kenmore square (the rat) financial district (cantones) and too many clubs in cambridge to name. NOB was and is a GREAT band who influenced more people than we will ever know.

Clint conley is my neighbor.... Never knew he was n a popular band though he seems so normal..
mangolicous18 3 years ago
I know Clint too...we go to the same church. Though I was an MoB fan back in the early 80's, I didn't realize the Clint from church was the same Clint from MoB until the church secretary posted a NYTimes Arts Section front page review of a reunion show with Clint's name highlighted, just like all the other local newspaper clippings that get hung in church offices....I nearly fell over dead.

you spend to much time focusing on titles at the very least.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago
for knowing so much about music, you'd know that grunge was a term invented by rolling stone. If you want to know about punk, get beyond the pistols. PiL was at least ten times better, the pistols were just sensationalists would signed to EMI before anyone really knew of them. They might as well be journey.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago
the crowd is really pumped up! what the hell happened? was the crowd tricked into thinking the jonas brothers were playing insted?

I never clamed charlotte to be punk the first record was the closest they ever made it then they went pop all the time......no charlotte is not punk

That's the problem...anyone can post anything. That's also the good things too in this bizarro world. And halifuckinfan, if you should see Santa be sure and tell him SATAN SATAN SATAN
goingdeaf4444 3 years ago
music is different now man you can look at it as a terible era for music but the 80's were the same way.....on a superficial level the 80's sucked...but minor threat, the dead kennadies and black flag all came from the 80's....the 2000s have good stuff you just have to look beyond what pop radio is playing to find it
halifuckinfan 3 years ago
punk here in the states wasent the movement it was in the uk....im only 16 so its not somthing i lived through but punk devided the uk it was a phase here...grunge killed the 80's efectively and was more of a social movement....good boston band here though
halifuckinfan 3 years ago
punk was a UK invention that we wanted to not coppy but make better....but grunge was our punk that was a true revolution
halifuckinfan 3 years ago
how about if its just good. Grunge does suck though.

Brilliant song but it seems like they just don't have any energy behind it here.
jackson2578 3 years ago
The band only gives as much as the crowd is giving them. And by the looks of it, that crowd is dead anyways.
batesyy 3 years ago 3
Great song but you've got to hate seeing punk and post-punk bands perform like this. I've been to plenty of shows for older bands like this that end up being disappointing because they're low energy and full of fans who just listened to the records for years wanting to hear their favorite song. It's very un-punk. All the best shows I've ever been to are in intimate, small venues. I saw the Bishop brothers of Sun City Girls fame recently with a crowd of about 30 people and it was amazing.
demonscrowley 3 years ago
You're an idiot. Rotten was London Irish from Finsbury Park, Jones & Cook were from Shepherd's Bush, Vicious was the son of a junkie hippie on welfare. Not that it makes a difference as far as the music goes, but the Pistols were from the most dismal working class backgrounds imaginable. You're probably just some American suburban middle class twat anyway, trying to act "street." Wank.
chimphater 3 years ago
Orchid I have to agree, although there are some great UK punk bands (Fuck the pistols) like the Clash, the Jam, GBH, US bands invented punk and hardcore...grogfrog should put Nevermind the Bollocks on and crawl back into his burrow.

GO SOUTHIE. This is one of my favorite songs off one of my favorite LPs.
shibman1103 3 years ago
wow, thanks for looking way to far into my comment. America is home to most of the cream when it comes to punk, historically but you have to give them credit for helping spread the ideology. Considering the UK had a lot more successful (mainstream wise) bands than the US up until MTV ruined the whole thing.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago
It's so good it must be english... but no, few dudes from southie. Good job Boston! I want to be in this band.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago 2
what makes you think that they are from southie?
RaddNiner 3 years ago
the bio of theres that was included on a CD i bought. I dunno... that a bad source?
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago
Wikipedia says that Roger Miller is From Michigan and i think one of them is from Waltham. What did it say? I never heard anything about the punk scene in southie, I think it was around Kenmore sq and Allston.
RaddNiner 3 years ago
Well, I cannot say where the members were born, because I don't know about that, but the band (according to my memory) was formed in southie. Which really just means, they jammed in a spot there anyway. I really don't care, i just like the music.
funkyfoolfromVanNuys 3 years ago
yea, amazing band. great musicians, punk as hell, and very artistic. You dont find that often.
RaddNiner 3 years ago
The punk scene in Boston was in a lot of different places: The Rat, Cantone's, Chet's Last Call, The Channel, loft parties in the South End, etc. It was more about clubs that booked punk bands than any specific geographical location.
