The way i see it, singing popular songs will make people notice her. Its not wrong at all. Those songs have usually good melodies , good lyrics and widely accepted. Those are classics and by proving u can sing the classics well... you are considered a potentially good singer. Then you will probably go another stage by singing your own style, own music... I believe she has made that transition. She has her own songs now.. they are pretty good. Of ocurse also, she's pretty !!
