This is cool! Would you post how you made it on Instructables or somewhere? It would be a kick to build one with my kids. Also, is there a way to get it to count down? Thanks for posting!

@mrioawnat i built this a while back now, in a design-as-u-go fashion with rough sketchs on scrap paper....so no longer have the diagrams. Looking at the board its a nightmare of wiring. The 555 timer pulses the 4017 which feed the RED outer circle leds. 4017 carryout feeds the 4015 shift registers the data line on the first shift register held high so that each clock pulse from the 4017 puts the next output high leaving the previous output high (latched counter?) this feeds the 4049/4050's

buffers feed the green outer ring LEDs and the bottom of the led hour glass.

invertors feed the top of the LED hour glass - as leds light at the bottom, there go out at the top
