@dstrong1337 That's so great to hear! Please always remember, the Taoist teachings don't claim to be any better than any other wisdom. For Taoism is about the unity of all life; and it is only through this understanding that we will achieve peace and harmony on earth.
And also, Taoism is one of the Religions that are not in Religious war. Killing people just because of their religion? Let the Taoism be a lesson for all of those who thinks that God helps if we fight, kill or show importance. I think that's all I've learned from Taoism I think I might be wrong in something. Bad part is that here in Portugal we don't have taoists nor converting to Taoism ;(
I have to say that Taoism is the real Religion I always liked to convert. Why? Because I'm a christian and everything here is always about going to churches, praying to God and Jesus, go to religious festivals and when they say if we do not go or do any of these "God will punish us". I don't understand why all the workships and prays? Taoism is all about finding a path and contact with Nature and feel a new self inside one self and not workshiping Gods for helping us or demanding something
Is this philosophical Daoism or is it religious Daoism? Because there are monks who dress "funny" and they do perform rituals such as meditation, the burning of incense, and the burning of "false money" as well as chant hymns. Now if this is about the philosophy of it good job. But I know that there are practices that are maintained and implemented by Daoist Monks
Bobba, I have a Social Studies report about Taoism and I don't know creative ways to present Taoism. It has to be 8-10 minutes long. Any suggestions? Thank you.
@eljaytomas123 If you click on "show more" under this video, you will see I have attached the transcript. I suggest you rewrite this in your own words and use this as the basis of your report. Add some of your own ideas, experiences and perceptions of Tao to further personalise it. @yinyangnature Arigato! (Thanks!) I think that would be a great idea. On the off-topic, Your videos are very inspiring and inviting, Bobba. I already have an unquenchable interest to this philosophy! I hope you make more inspiring videos! My report will be in a few days so wish me luck!
taoism makes more sense then any other of the worlds main religions today "but its infact at the same time not a religion"...It simply teaches to live life, not daily increasing but daily decreasing and looking at life from all possible angles unlike other religions who worship systems and idols were they are far more important then the actual human being...P.S. im not a taoist but i think it makes alot more sense.
@ragdoll485 I believe you can be Taoist (Daoist) and Christian at the same time Christians also have a similarity in the importance in balance god devil water fire it is said in the bible that god created women as mans opposite but I do not directly follow the Christian dairhb
natural disasters happen when people do things like do drugs, drink alcohol, eat pork, and have illegal marital affairs. or any number of wrong and unjust things both to themselves and other people.
@Lockleym One should not confuse Philosophical Taoism and Religious Taoism. This video is about Philosophical Taoism, which is only similar to Religious Taoism, by name.
@yinyangnature I appreciate that but I don't see it as applicable to the point I raised. It seems that the practitioners of Taoism completely avoid the subject entirely. It is indeed SOME people's nature to do good, or pick up the scorpion so to speak. But others would throw the scorpion into the river just for kicks, and according to philosophical Taoism this is perfectly natural and acceptable. It's the yin and yang. Why can't a Taoist see it that way though? It's pretty clear to me.
@afflixi0n I'll try it from another angle. From a Universe of chaos, somehow a pattern of intelligence emerged. On earth, this pattern is called Nature or Tao. Tao always gravitates towards the conditions most favourable for life. Therefore, if we are also of Tao, it is also in our nature to gravitate to the aspects that are the most favourable to life, i.e. benevolence. However, this is difficult to achieve from the standpoint of self-centred ego and this is mankind's biggest problem.
@yinyangnature My comments are not affixing properly for some reason. @yinyangnature, my thoughts on Ecopsychology were meant in answer to your thoughts about it being some peoples nature to "do good" and others not, and that Taoists are perfectly ok with this. As a taoist myself, maybe my comment might help you understand my personal take on it. I thing @affixi0n has done a good job of explaining also, and they are right, true nature of being always seeks homeostasis, this is health & balance.
@silentfaun I think its important to determine what someone defines as evil before such a question can be answered. For me a very destructive earth quake, although very regrettable, is not an act of evil. However, one would be hard pressed not to call the drugging of the boy soldiers in Sierra Leone, who macheted off the limbs of children, anything but evil. It would be very difficult to imagine anyone standing back and simply allow things to run their course in these circumstances.
@yinyangnature Again, my comments are not affixing properly. I was agreeing with your comments. I was trying to give a different perspective to @affixi0n. Having to define evil was exactly my point - it is a human concept based on human perceptions. The things a sociopath are capable of absolutely seem "evil", but the sociopath is ill, they literally are incapable of connecting and feeling compassion - they are out of balance and therefore capable of severe abhorrent behavior.
@afflixi0n Ecopsychology explores how human illnesses are related to how far they are removed from Nature. One idea is that some point in our species development we suffered a psychological and/or spiritual illness which can be observed by how humans are the ONLY species that destroys it's own habitat which is literally insane since once a species environment is gone it dies out. Good & evil are subjective human concepts, not yin/yang. A balanced healthy being does not "do evil" & balance is TAO
Considering this explanation of Taoism, I'm a bit perplexed by your response to Q8yGodfather regarding criminal behavior and the desire or need to eliminate it, as well as the question of causing harm to one another. If I am to understand the concepts of Taoism correctly, isn't it just as natural that some people do "evil" and cause harm to others? Would it not be a necessary part of the universal balance that some people cause harm while others do not? That is the yin and yang, is it not?
@afflixi0n Two monks were washing in a river, when one notices a drowning scorpion. He attempts to rescue it, but gets stung and drops it. When the monk tries for a second time the other monk calls out in discussed, "Can't you see its in its nature to sting you?" To this the monk replied, "Can't you see it's in my nature to try to rescue all beings from suffering?" I think it's in our nature to try to eliminate evil whenever it's encountered, knowing full well this can never be fully achieved.
Simply put.. I have been listening to Alan Watts a lot lately and sometimes I get confused by the complexity of his lectures. This has helped me to understand more. Thank you <3
I think this is a great explanation of Tao in a nutshell and dispels a lot of the cumbersome and wrong ideas that have come to be associated with the Tao and Taoism
@tomasbermea Sure. Just as anyone can use the metric measurement system and still drive on the right hand side of the road. Wisdom remains wisdom, regardless of the source.
@PokemonMasterJedi The Ancients taught if one follows their True Nature, right and wrong would cease to have meaning. Does this mean one can harm others? This question never occurs to one who has experienced their True Nature, as it wouldn’t to a child - where the thought of harming anything is beyond all understanding. Unfortunately, our child’s mind was all too soon swept away by our cultural indoctrination, so we all end up confused adults, struggling to make sense of moralistic teachings.
Dear brothers and sisters. Please have a look at my video 'To All The People In The World'. It gives a simple positive message about us and respecting each others religions. Thanks.
@TaoFAQ yeaa i was reading on that, i barely got a book. Anything going against (true) nature is already the wrong aproach for ex killing or stealing...
@ou812bass True nature is the way we were as kids, before society got to us. Kids don't see others in categories of race, religion, social class or sexuality. Kids interact with everyone equally. This is the reason for entertainment ratings, to prevent kids seeing societie's corruption too soon. For the process of destroying a kid's True nature must be done slowly in order for it to succeed. Otherwise they will resist morphing into the corrupt egocentric adults our society requires to function.
@War4Gore The Taoists warned us it's very difficult to understand Tao with words. Therefore don't get too bogged down in the semantics, otherwise Tao will totally allude you. 10,000 things (or a myriad of things) is everything physical, eg Nature. "Unborn" means not produced by something else physical. Earth is a manifestation of the Universe. Like all physical things, our planet came out of emptiness and will someday return. Just as we are manifestations of the earth and will someday return.
An etroridinary way of life. This was enlightening to find that this way of life has been around for so long. I had't known of it. However, it would seem even without knowing of Taoism, I followed it. Strange how things work out.
@KingGingerbread5O I thought the very same thing when I found the Taoist teachings over 8 years ago. That is how I knew the philosophy was very special. For it wasn't to teach me something new....Rather it was to remind me of something I had forgotten. Namaste Bobba.
@KingGingerbread5O The cheapest way is to Google "Tao Te Ching". Dozens of translations by numerous scholars will appear. The best traditional translation online is by Gia Fu Feng and Jane English. The best translation in modern vernacular is by Ron Hogan. There are well over 300 translations of the Tao Te ching and most bookshops would have at least 1 version in there spiritual/self help section. The 1 by Wayne Dyer, called "Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life" is an exceptional book.
this is especifically why I love this taoism. It's simple and no restriction. There are no weird beliefs like in scientology. You follow what you want, you do what you want and live life like you want it to be.
@Q8yGodfather Why are there criminals? Are criminals born or are they simply a result of the environment in which they were raised? If a dog is severally beaten as a puppy, is he a bad dog if he bites out of fear? Rather than punish the criminal after he has victimise another; wouldn't it be far better identify root cause of all criminal behavior and eliminate victimisation for all time? Until we start looking at old problems with new eyes, we are just spinning our wheels and going nowhere.
@TaoFAQ Some people are just born mental. You have to accept that fact.
Now we can say maybe he was born like that because of something the mother did or didn't do but some people can't help what they do because they literally don't know any better. Or some other reason.
@14sJakeB190 Some people have mental deficiencies, just as some machines malfunction. It's a measure of society whether we choose to scrap these people or undertake some kind of repair. Yet the best maintenance programs are based on preventive maintenance, by identifying the root cause, rather than waiting for a major malfunction that could result in death or injury. Crime and the causes are well covered in "Zeitgeist - Moving Forward" available on Youtube and is well worth watching.
That's the picture of Confucius on the left, the Buddha in the center and Laozi on the right tasting vinegar, and therein lies the message, so it says.
Confucius has a bitter expression, the Buddha has a sour expression, while Laozi has a sweet expression.
@MusicAmidstTheTrees Indeed. The vinegar they are tasting is a metaphor for life. Both Buddha and Confucius considered life a difficult experience, whereas Lao Tzu did not.
@windmoveswater Indeed. When we look at the animals around us, such as the birds, we don't see them struggling their way through life. Spring comes, the birds make a nest. Winter comes, they fly to warmer climates. Life would be so much easier if we trusted our intuitions and lived life in the moment - such as our feathered friends do. (Alias yinyangnature)
@waqasanees Philosophical Taoism is not prescription, but rather a method of having no method. Therefore it doesn't attempt to moralize or provide a list of evil or Godly behaviors. I would advise you to read the "Tao Te Ching". There are many free online versions available. Try the modern translation by Ron Hogan.
@TaoFAQ love this piece very clear and lovely !! thank you i am one now i have a name to refer too !! always did to get out of vaccines for my child , now i see its also wonderful !!!
i like the Chinese religions so much because they're so peaceful and chill. They also don't scare the shit out of people with hell and shit. I don't believe in afterlife.
@njguitarnewbjk Then this phylosophy might be for you since Taoism doesn't really focus on the topics of afterlife or gods for that matter. The ancient Taoists wrote nothing but contradictions in the Tao te Ching as a way of symbolizing the balance of everything and at one point they wrote that they didn't know whether or not there is or was a god. However, they didn't really feel that it was necessary to believe in one since the universe keeps itself in check.
@njguitarnewbjk "i like the Chinese religions so much because they're so peaceful and chill. They also don't scare the shit out of people with hell and shit. I don't believe in afterlife."
Oh Yeah? Well, YOU'RE going to go to HELL for that comment!!!! JK lol :)
Where can I find the picture at 2:16? That is AMAZING. It says all that you really need to know right there in the image. I want to put that up if I could. Just beautiful.
@magicator Im sorry you found this personally offensive my friend. I believe a guru is fine, as long as his role is liberative and not habitual. Unfortunately gurus are often the latter. These days with a lot of material freely available from a wide variety of sources, why limit oneself to a single teacher?
Out of curiosity, where does meditation come into this? I understand that mediation is not a required practice, but surely it is very useful for maintaining and bringing about peace, harmony, and a feeling of unity of nature, right?
@ReWritableDisk. You are correct my friend, meditation is an extremely useful practise. However in Taoism, meditation is not limited to sitting with an empty mind. It can also be peeling potatoes, as it is said in Zen. I will be discussing Taoist meditation in depth in a later video.
The more complex your community, the more weridos there are. An overcrowded city creates more stress, yet unity is stronger in a big divers city. How do think the world should grow? What's the best way to obtain "world peace"? lol "Just go with the Flow"
@ZOA360 Other than going with the flow, one should also practice Compassion, Moderation & Humility.
It is time our species evolves to the next level and embrace a resource based economy. This is a level beyond politics, ideology, poverty and war; where all resources are the common heritage of all the worlds' people.
Please see The Venus Project for more information.
" I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for oneself, one's own family or nation, but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace."
"Responsibility does not only lie with the leaders of our countries or with those who have been appointed or elected to do a particular job. It lies with each of us individually. Peace, for example, starts within each one of us. When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us." Dalai Lama
Peace starts from within: Even if everything in the world was perfect - people can still experience mental discontent. But true peace can be found no matter what environment we are in.
@TaoFAQ Sure. Practicing, "Compassion, Moderation & Humility" should be the way. That should be the basic practice, or the "flow" that we should follow or "go with" lol. With the world growing more complex everyday, new forms of systems are needed. We are Evolving, but the same overall cycles remain; yin and yang.
@TaoFAQ Sure. Practicing "Compassion, Moderation & Humility" should be the way. That should be the basic practice or "flow" we should follow or "go with" lol.
As we evolve more complex, we need new systems. But the overall cycles remain; yin and yang.
So, what do you think should be done with a child molester who claims they are only being "their natural self" and interpreting "the teachings of nature for themselves"? I mean no offense, I seek only understanding.
Do you believe molestation is something that occurs naturally in Nature? Like most aberrant behaviour, it is only ever seen in humans and most frequently in cities.
Zoologist, Dr Desmond Morris wrote of this in his book, "The Human Zoo". He found cities bring about our species most destructive behaviour, as cities are not an environment that is good for humans.
Therefore it seems living in villages is more in keeping with the Tao, where crimes such as these are far less frequent.

@Kansyn Indeed. Wisdom is a journey of discovery, and not necessarily found in obedience or asceticism.

what about the criminal ? no hell waiting for him ? kill whoever you want ?
because not all people are good .. actually most of them like an animals
Q8yGodfather 1 year ago

14sJakeB190 4 months ago

MusicAmidstTheTrees 1 year ago
@MusicAmidstTheTrees Indeed. The vinegar they are tasting is a metaphor for life. Both Buddha and Confucius considered life a difficult experience, whereas Lao Tzu did not.
yinyangnature 1 year ago
@yinyangnature I think Buddha and Lao Tzu had a similar idea in that the easiness of life is completely up to you.
windmoveswater 10 months ago
@windmoveswater Indeed. When we look at the animals around us, such as the birds, we don't see them struggling their way through life. Spring comes, the birds make a nest. Winter comes, they fly to warmer climates. Life would be so much easier if we trusted our intuitions and lived life in the moment - such as our feathered friends do. (Alias yinyangnature)

Great work mate. What does Taoism say about sexuality?
waqasanees 1 year ago
@waqasanees Philosophical Taoism is not prescription, but rather a method of having no method. Therefore it doesn't attempt to moralize or provide a list of evil or Godly behaviors. I would advise you to read the "Tao Te Ching". There are many free online versions available. Try the modern translation by Ron Hogan.

i like the Chinese religions so much because they're so peaceful and chill. They also don't scare the shit out of people with hell and shit. I don't believe in afterlife.
njguitarnewbjk 1 year ago
@njguitarnewbjk Then this phylosophy might be for you since Taoism doesn't really focus on the topics of afterlife or gods for that matter. The ancient Taoists wrote nothing but contradictions in the Tao te Ching as a way of symbolizing the balance of everything and at one point they wrote that they didn't know whether or not there is or was a god. However, they didn't really feel that it was necessary to believe in one since the universe keeps itself in check.

Sorry but having a guru is not wacky stuff. We need incarnations, enlightened authorities to guide us.
magicator 1 year ago
@magicator Im sorry you found this personally offensive my friend. I believe a guru is fine, as long as his role is liberative and not habitual. Unfortunately gurus are often the latter. These days with a lot of material freely available from a wide variety of sources, why limit oneself to a single teacher?

Out of curiosity, where does meditation come into this? I understand that mediation is not a required practice, but surely it is very useful for maintaining and bringing about peace, harmony, and a feeling of unity of nature, right?
ReWritableDisk 1 year ago
@ReWritableDisk. You are correct my friend, meditation is an extremely useful practise. However in Taoism, meditation is not limited to sitting with an empty mind. It can also be peeling potatoes, as it is said in Zen. I will be discussing Taoist meditation in depth in a later video.

The more complex your community, the more weridos there are. An overcrowded city creates more stress, yet unity is stronger in a big divers city. How do think the world should grow? What's the best way to obtain "world peace"? lol "Just go with the Flow"
ZOA360 1 year ago

Dalai Lama
TurquoiseLamp 1 year ago

So, what do you think should be done with a child molester who claims they are only being "their natural self" and interpreting "the teachings of nature for themselves"? I mean no offense, I seek only understanding.
BEGOODTOYOURDOG1 1 year ago
Do you believe molestation is something that occurs naturally in Nature? Like most aberrant behaviour, it is only ever seen in humans and most frequently in cities.
Zoologist, Dr Desmond Morris wrote of this in his book, "The Human Zoo". He found cities bring about our species most destructive behaviour, as cities are not an environment that is good for humans.
Therefore it seems living in villages is more in keeping with the Tao, where crimes such as these are far less frequent.
