I envy all of you who have gotten to play this piece (or anything else from Wagner). I hope I'd find a music group that would play something like this!
@theaws0m3guy If the trumpet hangs over at the end then is a copy from an Eastman Wind Ensemble LP called "Wagner for Band" Conducted by Fredrick Fennell from the 60's.
i first heard this song when watching the mini-series "Hitler, the rise of evil" ever since then i have fallen in love with it. i would rather listen to this than any modern music - and i am only 16. its no wonder why Hitler used Richard Wagner as his insparation, its just sad he went to far.
@alexanderg091694 Well, then you are just like me! I was also about 17 when I started to listen to classical music. And I've never looked back. Wagner, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Händel just gave me so much more than anything else that there was no going back, if you know what I mean. But only people with a estetic and moral sense can understand that. Even my own father ridiculed me becauce of that! Roy from Norway
I sat 1st chair horn when our high school band played this at contest in 1958. It was my favorite then and still brings chill bumps and tears when I listen today. I wish I could go back and recreate the moment.
@walkerogden I was our high school band's first chair flutist in '91, and when we first played this, I fell in love, and I have remembered it ever since. Everyone else absolutely hated it, and our conductor bowed to the popular vote, and we didn't end up playing it in the winter concert. I, however, have never forgotten it now 20 years later. The melodic, bittersweet build up is almost more than you can bear.
Im a sophomore playing this for flute in symphonic band. This piece is deffinatly moving lol Key change is terrible but once you got it down, it sounds amazing. I love itttt!
too bad that a lot of people think wagner is correlative with hitler. he's one of the greatest german composers and his reputation got ruined by the social propaganda....
@ethusiasm Actually, if you look at Adolf Hitler, I've read multiple biographies on him, you will find that he is radically Nationalist. Wagner was actually more a victim of circumstance than anything, because he was the face of German culture in the 1930's-1940's. It's interesting how his Baroque style continued through the mid-1900's even though the Baroque movement ended some time earlier.
omg sounds so pretty when you dont have a lil group of high school students trying to put together a cancerito peice (however you spell that c word). but yeah i play flute for this song and that key change was like wth and the notes got really high at the end. sounds awesome when people practice their music
Does anyone else have a part with the small omittable measure? My whole band had parts with one omittable measure and we played it but I can't seem to find a single video where a band plays that omitted measure!
This is my absolute favourite piece, ever. I play bass drum in it for a senior band, and being able to look out along the wind esemble whilst in the grip of this masterpiece of phenomenal.
By far the best performance of this piece posted on U Tube! Most groups tend to drag the tempo a little. Not so, here. Intonation is also by far the best. Bravo!
This is definitely the U of Mich Symphony Band - check out the video response. I have three recordings of them playing it. This is the one from the last European Tour just before Revelli retired after 35 years with the band. My posted recording is the one from 1961 - after returning from USSR Tour during the Cold War. The oboe solo is beautiful.- I should know because.I majored in oboe at U of M and Juilliard - no it's not me. Exodia: listen for horns at 4:27 - is this what you want to hear?
This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. I played this with the Massachusetts Lions Club All-State band in early '06. This song is one that will never get old in my thoughts. I wonder who this is playing.
Of all the band versions on Youtube, this one is the best. The tempo flows nicely - it is a procession after all, not a dirge. Also, though the balance is still wrong from 2:20 on (the melody is in the brass, not the upper winds), it's not as bad as most. Too band the band transcription lacks the arpeggiated violin line just before the climax - it's important. On the other hand, major props for the harp.
Yes, I am a huge fan of the harp. It really gives it such a beautiful feel. I do wish the brass was more pronounced, especially when the 2nd Part trumpets come in at 2:20 as you said.
This composition lifts me up into the clouds; a couple of other Wagner pieces do much the same, but no other composer has that effect on me. Not sure why that is, but I sure love listening to this.
I envy all of you who have gotten to play this piece (or anything else from Wagner). I hope I'd find a music group that would play something like this!
