what if, two autonomous cars try to win the same parking spot, and they acknowledge each other when they were beginning to accelerating their engine at 200mph already?
or, what if, some dude get off of his cars and walk right into the way during the high-speed maneuver of the autonomous car?
in case of ordinary drivers, we expect them to slow down when they were parking, right?
I think a lot of you are missing the point... I highly doubt they are making this so you can park your car in such a way. They already have cars that can park themselves in a safe manner. I'm sure they are doing this research to help avoid car accidents in the future. Basically, a computer can think faster than a human, and if they can program the car to understand complex dynamics, like sliding and such (like in the video) it could help save lives.
How many training circles does the car need to do this right? I imagine the software has to adapt pretty quickly to changes in the underground and/or tires parameters (i.e. due to weather, road conditions, etc.)? Would be very "uncomfortable" - to say the least - if u would risk damaging other cars while ur car is learning this move :)
I love that technology. I understand that some people don't want to give up control But, there are some people who need driverless technology. I, for one, am in favor of that. I believe that the driverless car is a wonderful thing in the future.
@DontKnowMyName No matter how much confidence one has in their driving abilities, people make mistakes. When perfected, autonomous cars will save millions of lives every year. That's what this research is for.
@railfan844 What is the purpose of this comment? If no offense is intended than is it meant to merely inform him? I'm sure he knows how his voice sounds and doesn't need or appreciate your opinion of it.
I was thinking the same, besides, how come someone will have such much room to park going backwards at the speed needed to make the loop and park the car facing the wrong side of the lane? Leaving the spot also has the same conflict, the car need no cars using the street so the car would leave using the wrong direction of the lane and then turning around (?)
@medinauta Surely this is not meant for practical use, autonomous cars of the future will be making much more conservative maneuvers, this is meant for research purposes only...to gain an understanding of what the system is capable of and to some extent, to show off their handywork, not necessarily so that robot cars can perform such a move on a routine basis.
Concerning why we are sitting in the car during the demo, bandwagon is correct: it's just safer. In case the software decides to drive home instead of finishing the experiment, it's better to sit next to the red button. The software was nice to us, though, and we didn't have to use it :-) -- Christian.
@alpha7950 the only reason a computer is even DRIVING the car is because a PERSON needs to get somewhere, how would that person get to his/her destination if he/she wasn't in the car?
very nice, looks like there is quite a lot of sponsorship on the vehicle as well which indicates there's some money behind this. Lets hope we see more in the future!
WTF!

@ekanipata And that is why autonomous cars need to learn dealing with unexpected variables. And why they don't do these test's on the street...

Why so much programming and technology shit. Just sit behind the steering wheel and do it. Its not that hard.

Awesome)))) But there is just one thing: if a human being is unable to park in a so tiny parking spot will he be able to go out of the spot?))))))))
