did anyone looked into converting rocket from butane to solid alcohol like
wilesco engines? there is an ample room where the butane burner unit
shoots the flame.... another thing is the tube you have to unscrew to fill will butane has a troublesome valve which leaks... i solved the problem of that
i'll be hanging some pix at my channel for ppl to see......
im having trouble building the steam up in my rocket. she does not have the power to pull its own weight but will if you lift her up. it also chucks loads of water out the bottom whilst heating up. please help
Very nice. Wish I had bought one now as I understand they're very collectable. Oh well, the run seems much better than todays "live steam" locos which just run at break-neck speed and appear to be very unrealistic and uncontrollable. Nice video 5* from me.
There is a sort of regulator - a knob pokes out of the back of the firbox which regulates the butane supply! But you do have to give the loco a shove to get it going. The only other control is the primitive valve gear which is a sort of slip arrangement, just for forward & reverse. They were very susceptible to boiler "implosion" - the actual boiler is much smaller than the cosmetic outer shell, and they tended to run dry and become squashed!
The weird thing is, they are SLIGHTLY narrow gauge and when I took my friends' to a 3.5" ga. club track, it derails easily, so we will re-gauge the wheels and flanges.
Nice to see one of these working again! In 1981 a bunch of us attended Rocket 150 at Rainhill. Obviously the only way to round off the evening was to drink lots of beer and run TWO Hornby Rockets in a friend's garden. I do not recommend this procedure as both locos are now stationary displays! Happy days, before the kids came along.......
Yes indeed they did make 3.5" gauge, but only the Rocket and its coaches, plus track. Does anybody know where they were made? The old Triang factory at Margate?
Shame Hornby did build this model for long, they could have made other models in that gauge,I would have bought them, when this model was new I was eight I think and my parents kept me well away from adverts,TV + toy shops,so I never asked for what I didnt know about! My most advanced toy Lego and even then I new saw any advertising for it,very deprived childhood.Xmas I never knew what I was going to get, didnt get pocket money till I was about 14 and we never went "shopping" except to Tesco's
Nice to see one of those live steam rockets running. I remember having a flyer for the rocket model slotted in a second hand hornby catalogue I found in a junkshop. I guess they're quite rare now...
We have 2 of these engines still in the loft mine did`nt run to well but dads ran better was wondering what do you use for fuel refills when it runs low? do you know what horse power of the engine is I always wanted to ride on it when i was a kid

@1badapple1984 hi did you figured out why ? did anyone reply to your post and said anything?
let me know, please.
thanx
gyreenedoc 3 months ago
@gyreenedoc no replys yet and still looking into it, trying to replace the seals once i find some or make some up.
1badapple1984 3 months ago
@1badapple1984 OK... try this, but mind you this is a suggestion i am not saying this is the cure...try not
filling the boiler to the top, leave a bit of space for the steam. (i check the water level with a chop stick)
it is disappointing english model steam engines are not as good as the wilesco engines.... but...
try and let me know...i am working on some things that might solve problems i will share info with you.
good luck..

Didn't think these could pull more than one of those coaches.
They're certainly collectors items now, with silly prices asked, so it's nice to see one running.

Collected it personally from the Hornby factory in Margate after much messing about many moons ago.. Beautiful model, thanks for sharing :)
