A and T. Now, there are different events that could happen to increase that amount of information. Like, let's say some sort of mutation were to occur which replicated both letters. So now it would be "ATAT"

It seems what you actually find hard to understand is evolution. Natural selection isn't random, so I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about. Evolution posits random mutation which is then acted on by non-random selection.
