  • Awesome bit of film-makoing, Irene! Gotta keep up with the time, I guess.

My favorite version of "Mud" on The 'Net!

  • MAN, that was weird! like some kind of ancient furries convention

  • Hello Choowbz send me an e-mail at helvetia3@aol.com and I'll send you back the discography I've compiled so far of the wonderfully talented Irene Taylor. As far as video of Irene Taylor, like Annette Hanshaw, she only made one film appearance. It's a Vitaphone short called "Listening In" from 1934 and she sings "I'm Not Lazy, I'm Just Dreamin'"

  • The lovely Irene Taylor (who married bandleader/singer Seger Ellis) is well worth discovering! I'm trying to find all of her sides. She's featured on a Charlie Agnew CD of 1932 radio transcriptions.

  • @3210lancaster If you put a video together of what you come up with in tour project, give us a buz and i'll sub.

Wouldn't it be nice if a trunk was found in an attic somewhere, containing boot leg home cut disks of Irene Taylor.

They used to do a lot of home recordings in those days and it was usualy the real stuff done for fun,

stuff too hot for the public of the thirties type stuff.

    Such things do happen

It would be a bigger find that King Tut.

  • I love bix beiderbecke on the cornet

  • Amazing film and wonderful music. I had forgotten Bing sang with Paul Whiteman and had never heard of Irene Taylor until this moment. Thank you, Choobz, for bringing me up to date with this great video.

  • @McGrenzer

To be honest i had no idea it was Bing when i made the video.

The early comments on this clip show how the kind info from musical buffs filled in the details of the singers and the band.

But it was one of my favourites that i liked so much i wanted to share.

I still never tire of it and its always good for raising the spirit.

It led me to look for more works by Irene Taylor.

    She was worth the search.

  • In the mid 50's I listened to a version of this song on a old record player at my grandmother's--she grew up in extreme western KY--just about 10 miles from where the Ohio and Mississippi flow together--wonderful to find this--thanks for posting

  • Actually, the music and the film are perfect together. You edited that really well.

  • @megaswenson

    Well Thanks for the compliment

I Worked hard with the Primitive Windows editor on this one

    It wasn't easy

    Lots of crashes

But it felt like a good fit and i persisted as a labour of love

You made my day with your comment

  • @Choowbz Thanks! I just made it my Lead Video for a couple of days. Special page dedicated to Mississippi's very special Governor.

  • I didn't know about this recording before. A fan of Irene Taylor's, I'm always happy to discover something "new" of hers. Much as I like Mildred Bailey, I thought it was a shame the way she eclipsed Taylor, who really was the first female mainstream jazz singer, if you ask me.

  • It was the soulful vocals of Irene Taylor that drew me to this version

I had heard many renditions of this song but non had the magic of this one

I credit it to the girl with vocals so sharp as to cut through time itself

  • That'd be nice to listen to sitting outside the camp on a nice sunny afternoon. Perfect music, nice cheery atmosphere.

  • I like the donkey he is enjoyable to watch.

  • phredl is correct. I played them both together (at the same time) and there is almost no difference. Vocal by Irene Taylor and the Rhythm Boys (Crosby, Harry Barris & Al Rinker).

  • Confirmed as Pul Whiteman with Bing.

A live version of this record can be heard at the site of "gramaphoneshane" on youtube.

  • There were two issued takes of Mississippi Mud . Take 3 on the original issue Victor 21274. Take 2 was issued in the Bix Memorial album on Victor 25366 All other personal was the same on both takes.

  • A hearty thanks to all for helping me fill in the blanks.

Would it be pushing it to ask for an accurate release date.

  • I can't give you a release date but take 3 Victor 21274 was recorded on Feb 18, 1928 and would have been released soon after. The Bix memorial album with take 2 (recorded the same day) was probably released sometime in July 1936

  • Who is the drummer in the background? .i think it is the same drummer like a version from Meaple leaf Rag...

  • The drummer is highly underrated and virtually unknown Hal McDonald

  • This is Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra featuring Bix, with vocals by Bing Crosby and the Rythym boys and Izzy Freidman.

  • Now. i open the fourth bootle wine..

  • I love it !

  • Sounds like Moaning Minnie but I can't say who the band was.

    Love the donkey
