  • How do you install tarballs?

  • You should be able to extract them and run the appropriate commands as found in the INSTALL or README file.

  • i really want to switch but installing software is a big problem, i don't get the command line terminal thingy, am not a geek, lol.

  • You don't need a command line to install software, but it's my preferred method.

Most software comes in the forms of 'packages', which you can double-click or check on a list of packages to install, then click 'Apply' and wait a moment. As long as you have an internet connection, you can install anything. If you don't have an internet connection, you can download packages as files and install them.

Installing software in Linux is much easier than on Windows or Mac.

  • that is, if they tell you how, or if its in the add remove or synaptic package. then its like what 3 clicks? even if it isnt there they usually tell you what to type so oh darn you have to type 3 things instead of clicking gosh dern diggity dang it

  • @ladex142

I switched but cannot get anything to install unless i am using the synaptic or apt- get. downloaded secondlife and drupal and cannot install them and I am not able to get my wireless to work and is it true that ipods will not work with this package. . I like the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS package

I am not a programmer and this seems harder than dos 6.0.

  • I'm a noob and I can't figure out how to connect to an unsecured network like I could do with Vista. How do you connect to a network?

  • Can you see the computer(s) icon in the top corner, click on that and select the network.

  • I noticed that my Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN button is turned off on my computer. I can't figure out how to have it on in Ubuntu. Is there compatibility issues? (I'm on vista because the internet on Ubuntu isn't working)

  • You're best asking on ubuntuforums [dot] org, but I think Broadcom should work.

  • You can install ubuntu 8.4 in vista if you like. It will pick up your hardware printers and not what when setting up

Networking and internet settings "set them to auto"

    ubuntu is good shit.
