I first heard this song about 20 years ago on an empty bus in a raining night. I was instantly attracted to it. The song sounded particularly sentimental in the rain. For the next two decades I tried my best to track down the song in record shops in vain. After twenty years, when my heart has broken again and again, I can finally understand the messages of the song and cry along with it.
@tangowen09 very moving recall. i understand perfectly. i learned it on guitar and sang it to friends many years later in a small party. i could see in their faces how some things never leave us, as i sang, i remembered too. good luck!
.......great !.........its amazing that songs like this move you even when you were too young to have experienced lost love at the time they are recorded.....now that im 45 i can actually relate to the lyrics as im sure alot of people can, male and female alike....RIP Dennis !
It is not a song of my generation but as beautiful as it can get I find no words to describe what a beautiful expression of love and how powerful it is. There is always one love and how dumb one can be to let go of it. I Love You Jinny, my Jinny, you are the love of my life and miss you so much. God bless you.
awesome!!! Dennis Yost and the Classic 1V, i saw them in kahului maui, hawaii. totally awesome. a very unique voice and style of singing. another great 60s band.
I remember Dennis Yost singing the Star Spangled Banner at the 1971 MLB All-Star game and it was Fantastic the best I ever heard and game itself was one of the best I ever seen .Thank You Dennis Yost RIP
My husband and I owned a nightclub in Texas in early 80's. We were able to get Dennis and the Classics IV for our opening week. It was a great experience and the were friendly and kind and wonderful musicians. They were greatly enjoyed by small Texas town people even in the 80's.
This is real music. White lyrics, beautiful chords, great voice. What´s wrong with this? Nothing. The 60s, 70s and 80s were full of love and sensitivity. Classics IV are from a generation never to be forgotten.
Dennis was a really nice guy.i met him back in 1988 chesapeake va.he was opening for three dog night.he walked up to the fence and just started talking to a few of us.we talked for like an hour .i remember talking to him about the atlanta rhytum section the band that was later formed from his old group.rest in peace
Alright how can you dislike this??? I can understand if you look up a Lady GAGA or Kesha videos to dislike because they suck and the radios stations/tv crams them down your throat. But you never run into good stuff like this. You have to go out of your way to find it.
@AngelaDPlayful It is Don Webster.....this is in Cleveland. He has been everything from a weatherman to doing shows like this. He has retired to Hilton Head now, but still doing commercials.....all this from my cousin who lives in the Cleveland area.
@AngelaDPlayful check out this link.....it shows a history of the show that Don Webster did ....EVERYBODY from the 60s was on his show Upbeat. It was broadcast in 100 cities, not just Cleveland. Watch the whole clip and just look at all the stars that were on his show. His was the last show that Otis Redding performed on before getting on that fatal flight. The title of the clip is: Upbeat with Don Webster..Polka Varieties, Gene Carroll
great song, though a sad song. what a great voice, the melody is very haunting and the music just compliments Dennis' voice. they came to maui at the Maui Memorial and they were great and then in one song the drummer got up and Dennis sat down and man could he play. one of my all time facorites, Traces. great post

Was a hit when I was in high school. Got played at school dances in the gym. A great band and times of good music. Do high schools even have dances any more? In the gym? Kids today expect too much, have too much money, and in the end wind up with zero memories and music nothing as good as this.
@henrynevins Was a hit when I was in 6th grade. My first dance was still about 6 months away. Yes, I'm pretty sure it was in the gym, fall of 1969. Yes, kids today do expect too much and yes, they will have only superficial memories (backed by a soundtrack of shitty music).

@47yesican Hey friend, I feel for you. The same thing happened to me. The only girl I was in madly in love with for 4 years left me because her dad was the biggest ass on the planet. I still miss her 36 years later. Pretty sick huh? Oh well. Im still alive
Takes me back to a time that unfortunately my own children and others will never know. The age of innocence and pure love. . . . . . . thanks Classics IV forever.....

"...Faded photographs, covered now with lines and creases. Tickets torn in half, memories in bits and pieces.... Ribbons from her hair, souvenirs of days together
The ring she used to wear, pages from an old love letter..
I close my eyes and say a prayer That in her heart she'll find
A trace of love still there somewhere....."
This song still tears me up... I still think of that girl I only dated 6 mos. but got attached to. Wonder if she ever thinks of me...
What a tearjerker. I first heard this in the 80s on oldies radio, after a major heartbreak with a girl I thought would become my fiance... I cried so hard...
@zowlik That's a real tearful song when you consider the words. I bet you many men and women felt the same when they heard that song, much like a Righteous Bros. or Brenda Lee heartbreak song.
Wow, this song is sure a classic. R.I.P. Dennis Yost
Plus, this is from the TV show "Upbeat" from WEWS Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio hosted by Don Webster. Webster was a longtime Meteorologist, hosted many other local shows including "Academic Challenge", Webster was also the Station Manager at WEWS during the 1980's. Webster retired in 1999 after many years at WEWS.
So many days and years have passed yet those Traces still light my memories. The ribbon, the ring and the pages of her letter are etched into the storybook of my mind. Even today, nearly 40 years since I lost my only real love, this melody returns me to the time when they were all real, as if it was only yesterday.
@smujer1 : Thank you for the nice comment. As we get older and pictures from the past seem to grow dim, one needs to simply reach into their memories and look for the path that once led to the door, that when opened, lets him or her enter to re-live again moments or hours of joys they thought were gone.
if you do find "Pick Up The Pieces" let me know, that is one I cannot find. I also don't have "We Miss You" "One Man Show" "Make Me Believe" "Help Me Help Myself" "I Knew It Would Happen" "Lovin' Each Other" and their version of "It Never Rains In Southern California"
@pdejesu Keep thinking that: "Everybody is out of order, I am OK"...You are going to live a great life. My perception is that you are a popular, well loved guy, specially for your cruel and sarcastic comments...
one of my favorite songs feel the sadness and the love in dennis's voice so golden ,they just dont make em like that anymore ..beautiful lyrics and story telling..r.i.p. dennis.
This is one of the classic songs of all time. Dennis was one of the individuals that lead me into songwriting. In the mid-70's when I was picking up every book and manual I could find in songwriting, I found out how the Classic Four and other would write hit songs. 1969 was a great year for me...that is when I became a Professional Musician at age 15. Rest In Peace Dennis...GOD gave us a great gift in your music!
loved the classics four , spookie , every day with you girl, stormy, traces, etc.growing up in witchita in the 60;s played on kleo 1480, bring it all back please,
The fabulous 60's...A time of some of the best music that ever was and ever will be.. Every time I hear this song it takes me back to world of wonder and joy.. I miss those days.. sighs! What happened to those yesterdays? .Classic with the greatest of memories...music, friends and awesome times!
Thank you km2 for posting a great classic and memory
A true classic - no pun intended - along with most of the band's other singles and many LP tracks, especially the "Spooky" and "Stormy" 45s. Complete with the distinctive sax solo that graced all three singles.
This is the most amazing romantic song that helped me with all the girls I loved before as a young man. That was then, and It is still timeless today. The memories of this song have been like words cannot explain. RIP Dennis. You're one of the greatest in my book.
This song just makes me cry. There has never been another song ever recorded that so perfectly communicates the pain and longing of a man who has lost his love. Dennis Yost was a genius in his delivery of the lyrics, and whoever arranged this song...with the sax solo toward the end, before the final stanza of Dennis' desperate plea...totally understood how music can move a person emotionally. Music like this is not made anymore.
Perfect bitter swet love song... sure was exactly what my scrap book was filled with when my fiancee had to break up with me because of his mother. Thanks for posting.
Lip synched....the orchestral parts are the dead giveaway. Great song. I would have rather heard it live though.

@bobo7813 .....your comments draw tears to my eyes.....I know exactly what you mean..
smujer1 1 year ago
@smujer1 : Thank you for the nice comment. As we get older and pictures from the past seem to grow dim, one needs to simply reach into their memories and look for the path that once led to the door, that when opened, lets him or her enter to re-live again moments or hours of joys they thought were gone.

@bobo7813 ......very well said, I agree 100%

if you do find "Pick Up The Pieces" let me know, that is one I cannot find. I also don't have "We Miss You" "One Man Show" "Make Me Believe" "Help Me Help Myself" "I Knew It Would Happen" "Lovin' Each Other" and their version of "It Never Rains In Southern California"

They wrote great songs in the 1960s, but it appears that dentistry hadn't evolved very far.

One of the greatest songs of all time. And Dennis Yost was amazing.
girljazzlvr 1 year ago
This is one of the classic songs of all time. Dennis was one of the individuals that lead me into songwriting. In the mid-70's when I was picking up every book and manual I could find in songwriting, I found out how the Classic Four and other would write hit songs. 1969 was a great year for me...that is when I became a Professional Musician at age 15. Rest In Peace Dennis...GOD gave us a great gift in your music!

RIP Dennis. You're one of the greatest in my book.
facereto 1 year ago
This song just makes me cry. There has never been another song ever recorded that so perfectly communicates the pain and longing of a man who has lost his love. Dennis Yost was a genius in his delivery of the lyrics, and whoever arranged this song...with the sax solo toward the end, before the final stanza of Dennis' desperate plea...totally understood how music can move a person emotionally. Music like this is not made anymore.
