  • I don't know exact truth, but I in my opinion all these characters: Diotima, daemons, gods were actually extraterrestrials. I think so because Diotima was even more intelligent then Socrates himself. Also somehow Socrates blindly believed in only what "daemons" said.

  • Great video... interesting and informative :) Thanks!

  • Nice. I don't believe that there was a Diotima. Socrates was just trying to show the party goers that he too was naive and did not know what love was until he met this woman who enlightened him on the matter. If Socrates had just blurted out "You stupid assholes I am going to tell you the truth" it wouldn't have gone down very well. He had to be deferential didn't he

  • @poetinasia Two other points are that the topic of the Symposium is to praise the god Eros. In order to break the convention- Socrates has Diotima change the conception of what love is, which in her view/Socrates view is not derived from a god. Second, Diotima's description of love is a description of Socrates himself- made even more explicit by Alcibiades' drunken speech eulogizing Socrates in the spirit of Diotima's speech. I agree Diotima is a literary device invented by Socrates

  • deeoteema that's how you must pronunce it,
