When you see how he rescues the plane (and MANY lives) during and after the incident, it's pure skills. Many pilots would've got panic, reacted wrong and crashed the airplane. This pilot are of a true kind, and a hero.
Flight Simulator taught me one basic thing.. wind gusts and even worse wind shear can be a tremendous threat for every pilot in this world.. You may have a perfect image on final and all of a sudden a gust turns your standar and predictable approach into a nightmare.. So smart people thought about setting some restrictions.. By this aircraft's attitude it is more reasonable to blame the hazard and intensity of the winds that may exceed the limits rather than the pilot's response moves...

I am a commercial pilot, and I would not have even thought about trying a landing in a crosswind that strong.
You notice that he dragged the left wingtip. That will often cause structural damage that will tear the airplane apart after the miss or a fuel fire that will bring the plane down.
Assuming he did land safely somewhere else, this pilot was very, very, lucky!
The pilot is super pro and knows how to do crosswind landing during storm. But when there's storm and big earthquake at same time, you gotta improvise.

the winds must have been really strong that day.. he needed more rudder. the pilot did not feel safe landing so he did a go around.. i flew in 40+ mph winds in a skyhawk.. it's not pleasant at all..

@BelijaNero - planes carry a reserve so they can make it to an alternate airport. But unless the conditions exceed the plane's design limits, the pilots have to try to land it.

It was a fools attempt and thus the pilot and co-pilot shouldve had there flight status rejected. it was simply foolish to attempt the landing, they can always land elsewhere.

Several Mistakes:
1) The wind favored the other Runway, but Crew did not accept on first attempt.
2) The inexperienced Female copilot was flying in violation of the AOM. Captain should fly.
3) They did not stay inside the TDZ, and should have executed a Go Around
4) The approach was not "Stabilized" and they should have executed a Go Around.
5) Crosswind exceeded limitations for the A320 in the first place.....again, Go Around. BAD JUDGEMENT OF THE CAPTAIN !

This pilot was extremely foolish and extremely lucky.
I am a commercial pilot, and I would not have even thought about trying a landing in a crosswind that strong.
You notice that he dragged the left wingtip. That will often cause structural damage that will tear the airplane apart after the miss or a fuel fire that will bring the plane down.
Assuming he did land safely somewhere else, this pilot was very, very, lucky!

its just a crosswinds landing, pilot obviously underestimated the wind first time round, always had the plane under control though, looks like he went to land at quite some speed as to be able to pull back up if it got bad.

Fortunately SOMEONE in the cockpit had the presence of mind to abort, to apply full throttle, and to re-take-off & go round again .. just as you would on an aircraft carrier at sea.

it is most likely true that statistically planes are safer and i would probably agree. the thing is though, when one does crash, it takes out alot more people than those in a 2-car crash. as someone said about the difference between nuclear power station meltdown and a car crash, in the latter the government doesnt put out an emergency bulletin asking people to stop eating produce 2 states away. in other words, just because something happens less doesnt mean its better. :)

True. But planes do not crash every day but cars do. All around the world, every city, in every country there will probably be a deadly car crash every week or so, or atleast every month. With that in mind, thousands of thousands of people can be killed in car crashes every day or week all around the world.
One unfortunate plane crash may kill half of the passengers on board the plane. 150 out of 300 lets say.
But that is unlikely to happen as most crashes are survived by people.

ok for everybody thinking the pilot should not land with this wind:
the wind was cause by storm EMMA and it was a nearly europe wide storm so the pilot had two options:
1st Try to land somehow
2nd keep on flying till fuel runs out (35minutes after this landing attempt the fuel would run out)
so what would you do? you can't reach another airpot (no fuel) = you try to land
stop claiming he should not land at all, anyway it was a women flying that day.

pilot error was first and farmost attempting to land in such extreme wind sheering.
It was a fools attempt and thus the pilot and co-pilot shouldve had there flight status rejected. it was simply foolish to attempt the landing, they can always land elsewhere.
