  • I much preferred Robert Palmer as well and this is a T Rex cover, but John and Andy on Miami Vice, cool!

  • Michael Des Barres was not great for Power Station, but I thought he was great as the bad guy Murdoch on MacGuyver. Just sleazy enough.

  • This is the episode where Crocket and Tubbs admitted that they were gay lovers and had sex on the stage

  • Robert Palmer i cant understand wtf he says in this song , the guy singing in this video is better.

  • I just broke into full laughter when that dude punched that chick

  • Funny they ignore Tony Thompson here, and it was Thompson that set them apart.

  • "We got a new singer, you'll never notice the difference."

    Ummm....I noticed the difference.

  • @gaugeinvariant I agree, and sounded like crap. They sounded great w/ Robert Palmer in the band.

  • Why are people commenting on John Taylor's "you'll never notice the difference" as if it represents how he feels about DesBarres or anything else? It's a line from a script he surely had nothing to do with.

  • I love how in TV shows people can speak at normal volume while a rock band is blaring nearby. Wish it worked like that in real life. On another note, I liked Power Station, but Michael DesBarres was truly awful.

  • michel des barres had a hit under the name annimotion with the single obsession.jt does live in la.as for who played on riptide no idea.i think they got blade of tt ha.

  • @duranasty I didn't know Michael co-wrote Obsession. Thanx for the info. I saw Animotion perform that a few years ago.

  • @duranasty I do not think Debar was in Animotion, the only thing of note Debar did was marry a prostitute, just saying.

  • @godshackeysack1 Check the credits for the song. He co-wrote it.

  • @MissNovemberTuesday thank you !

  • LMAO, cheese and rice!

  • what the episode name?

  • @queenmagic1982 Season 2, episode 2 - "Whatever Works" Aired 4 Oktober 1985.

  • Andy is the one, he really rocks! I Love you, Andy!!!

  • I think John lives in L.A nowadays, but I may be mistaken...

  • Hi

a message to all the people who loves DD.

I'm going to London this August.

Does anybody know the area where John lives?

Please, help me. They tell me he lives in Kensington, but I don't konw if it's true..

    Anybody knows??

    Thanks in advance

  • @KINKANOS JT has a wife and several children and lives in Hollywood, California. He married the woman who own's"Juicy coutoure"....:)

DD is supposed to have a new CD out *who know's when* (mixing it, then "label approval").

    *hugs*

    LadyM

  • Love how they play the song "Vice" in the background in the beginning ov the clip.

  • "We got a new singah! You'll nevah notice da diff'rence!" Yeah, when a replacement vocalist is a close but no cigar sound-alike clone, isn't that typically considered pathetic?

  • I miss the 80's. Good music and girls with big hair!

  • Thanks for the clip Miss November Tuesday! I actually remember watching this espisode! lol

  • very cool!

    thanks 4 posting!

  • The singer, that's Murdoc, MacGuyver's nemesis!

  • YES

  • "You'd never notice the difference..." yeah, right. Funny?!?

  • Gotta love the guy doing the quasi-robot....

  • Thanks for posting. I saw them in concert that same year.

    (1985)

  • Also, I could sense some resentment from the JT when he said the line"We got a new singer. You can't even tell the difference." So obviously not true. Their voices sound way different and Robert had ten times the class of this Des Barres "glam rock" clown. I think JT may have just been trying to get back at Robert for not touring, but I doubt if Robert even was watching Miami Vice to hear the comment.

  • haha definatly a 'glam rock clown'.

  • robert died too soon man i miss him

  • This episode is interesting I didnt know he was Michael Des Barres, I guess he was producer with J T, Im not sure

  • He was brought in to sing when Robert Palmer was not available to tour with them. Not sure why they went with someone with such a different style, but it is what it is. I am just glad I saw them live the first time around and glad I saw Robert solo in 1985.

  • @MissNovemberTuesday Robert didn't think that it was going to develop into anything more than a "one off" studio album, but when the record took off, there was a damand for a tour and I think Robert was too busy working on "Riptide" to want to get into a Power Station tour. I agree with Holygasoline about Des Barres being an uncool dick. He acted like just because he got the gig as the new singer in Power Station that he was the coolest thing since sliced bread.

  • that ain't Robert Palmer.

  • i remember this episode of MV. think we all agree Palmer was FAR better singer than Des Barres, but well...he couldnt stay no more. good you post this, dude :)

  • fail

  • Des Barres was such an uncool dick, ruined the Power Station

  • Des Barres was a better actor than singer. Robert Palmer was so much better.

  • Miami Vice is the best!

  • I saw them in the mid 90's perform at Chili Peppers in Fort Lauderdale FLA. About 200 people MAYBE....I picked front row center (knowing that was Andy's spot) and they kicked ass. Tony, Robert, & Andy performed all the hits of PS and Palmer's biggest stuff too (most of which Andy and John played on). Unfortunately these were dark days for John and he was off trying to build the solo career that never caught on. Cool thing is I got a guitar pick from Andy after the show.

  • but Palmer was a better singer.

  • @wholderby Actually, it was Andy and Tony who played on many of Riptide's songs, not John and Andy.

  • In the day or few after filming this, they played a show at the Hollywood Sportatorium (Snortatorium) in Hollywood, FL. (I think it was their last date before Live Aid.) It was one hell of a kick-ass show. My ears rang for 5 days. They had Don Johnson come out and sing "Some Guys Have All The Luck." He did one hell of a job. After 150+ major concerts, that show is still one of my top 10 or 15.

  • Actually, I think Robert Palmer left the band to go on his own, he never did return. He never performed live with them except on SNL in February of 85. That is why Des barre went on tour with them and went on the show.

  • After the second album, Robert toured with the band. I somehow missed all of that, however living behind the Orange Curtain and not having a computer. I felt so cut off from the world back then.

  • Wow, I remember watching this and practically DROOLING, I was so in love with John Taylor, and look at him, he is a wreck! LOL! Still one of the hottest men out there!

  • everyone's super messed up on something..

  • High as kites on coke!

  • This is like the Glassmakers pub in St.HELENS every Saturday night, according to my Son,Neil.Ha ha ha ha.

  • My nads shriveled. And I love the original. By which I mean original Power Station version. Well, and original.

  • truth of the matter is Robert Palmer was on tour with his own band the same time Power Station where doing TV appearances like this and promotions for the album(including their Live Aid concert) so they had to settle for Des Barres.

  • who is cooler by far

  • i just wanna punch the lead singer in the nads.

...and john taylor. didn't realize bret the hitman hart was in the group. jerry-curled m'fer.

  • hahah!! Des Barres Rules

  • Of course RP is the best but this singer does a great job. He is more than competent.

  • Didn't T-Rex do this originally?

  • Yes, and brilliantly. Many of T-Rex's songs have been covered by a wide variety of bands through the years. Aside from Power Station, a couple of my favourite covers have been done by Bauhaus and Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

  • "You're right, nothing ever changes Crockett!!"

JT on blow still sounds sexier than the nasal Don Johnson!!

  • thanks 4 posting it!

  • This episode of Miami Vice ('Whatever works') is available on DVD: ("MIAMI VICE season 2")

  • that new singer sucks

  • LOL!! Love how John Taylor says "We just got a new singer... You'll never know the difference!!"

  • I remember this episode when it originally aired. I prefer Robert Palmer over Michael Des Barres. Thanks for posting this! :)

  • from the ridiculous (MDB) to the sublime (Palmer)

  • And where the f. is my man Robert Palmer..?? No way without him... But John Taylor is a good nr 2.....yeah.

  • Never notice?! He must have been stoned.

  • Quite possibly true @ the time. It would explain that comment.

  • JT, how could anyone NOT notice the difference? Palmer was much missed.

  • love powerstation, well talented!

  • I like more than Robert Palmer. Michael des barres,Detectives band I have all albums. great , sound, era, etc..... Santy

  • Power Station on Miami Vice was cool. Just like the rest of the artists that always showed up. A great tv show with great style and addictive appeal.

  • Nice one, thanks for sharing!

  • "The 80's Will Never Die" suckers, take that gangsters

    The Knight Rider Strikes Again

  • Considering how great this show was at times, this is a terribly hokey scene. It is like a bad inside joke or caricature of itself.

  • The product of the Best Band in the world meets the Best TV Show ... today we dont have much of this...we have pretty shaved californians and new yorkers talkin bout sex

  • awesome! thanx for posting

  • All i can say is ACE

i used to get stoned and go to these type of clubs in the 80's and it really was like that

  • fuckin a...i think i passed out from all the flashbacks.

  • Cette scène est terrible, surtout le live.

  • I can remember exactly where I was when this came on TV in 1985!

  • i remeber that scene, gracias x postearla.pablo d argentina.

  • Thanks for the memories! Man, I remember how excited I was when they broadcasted that episode, and how upset I ended up because they didn't shoot beautiful John Taylor enough... hee.

Now that I am just a bit older, I have to say that I kinda prefer the sound of the guitar over beautiful John Taylor, though.

  • I prefer M. Des Barres as an actor; lead singer for Scum Of The Earth on WKRP in '78, the maitre d at the restaurant where the valet "stunk up" Jerry's car on a Seinfeld episode, and an aging rock star on a 'Just Shoot Me' episode. Funny guy.

  • Holy Shit!! I thought that he was an XPENSIVE WHINO at first, namely "Keith Richards" LOL!!!!

  • Now, Michael Des Barres is classic! He even played Murdoch in MacGyver. And the song in the clip was originally made by a British band T.Rex in 1972, and it's real name is Get It On (Bang A Gong). And T.Rex's singer Marc Bolan did it better!

  • Yeah, T Rex was classic! MANY MANY MANY great bands were influenced by them and covered them. I really like the covers Bauhaus did, too. The original version was far more mellow than Power Station. For those who have not heard T Rex, I highly recommend you check them out.

  • Another one to add to my favourites. Lol.

  • They should have had Andy sing...he's hell of a lot better than Michael Des Barres. They Should have given him lines to say too.

  • I concur. "You'll never notice the difference..." Oh yeah---right. I bet Don Johnson and Des Barres knew one another from way back. That's no excuse for no Robert Palmer...

  • Cool! They had Power Station on there! I love Power Station! With JT talking. It's so cool!

  • I remeber this like it was on yesterday! LOL

  • I hated Michael Des Barres. Couldn't sing for shit. The fight scene looks so cheesy by the way.

  • I agree with you....I hated DesBarres with Power Station.....Robert Palmer is a zillion times better singer and better looking too!! Oh well at least John and Andy Taylor were still there :)

  • That was "Bang A Gong"?! For a moment I thought it was a cat in heat! Horrible! Robert Palmer is probably rolling over in his grave as I play this.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH LOL!!!!

  • I heard a live version of "Still in Your Heart" with Michael singing lead - AWFUL. Just awful.

  • OH THE HUMANITY!!!! Thank god I still have my PS vynil with the R. Palmer version intact!

  • Thank God I still have the original version of "Get it on" on my PS vinyl! And c'omon Michael des Barres is a great actor and singer. You just don't see him as Murdoch in MacGyver. I do.

  • Fantastic! I've wanted to see this since I first heard John and Andy were in it. Shame they couldn't of had more lines though (verbal lines, not white lines!) *cheeky*

  • I felt John had a decent amount of lines for this tiny cameo. Of course they were gonna have his pretty behind be the "spokesperson" of the band. Could you imagine having Michael DesBarres be the "spokesperson"? Ick!

  • you'll never notice the difference my ass.... Michael DesBar whatever... sounds nothing like Robert Palmer

  • Uhm, yeah! No kidding! Robert Palmer was the shit! I was lucky enough to see him live before Power Station. I was upset when I found out they had done a second album and toured with Robert and I missed it! Ah, well, @ least I had one chance before he was gone.

  • yes, that was the nutt! YOU'LL NEVER NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE!!! he was really trying to sing like robert palmer!~
