Hebrews.7:8 the priests who collect tithes are men who die, so Melchizedek king of peace, is greater than they are, because we are told he lives on. In addition, we might even say that these Levites-the ones who collect the tithe-paid a tenth to Melchizedek when their ancestor Abraham paid a tithe to him. although Levi wasn't born yet, the seed from which he came was in Abraham when Melchizedek received the tithe. (Jesus is a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek).

The person in Malachi that God is referring to stealing from him is NOT the people, it is the Priest. If you read the ENTIRE book you will realize the pronoun "YOU" follows throughout in reference to the Priest stealing the Levites tithe, the people who were under the priest working to help minister and build the temple. I understand that G. Craige Lewis is speaking against the manipulative way tithes are extracted by guileful preachers to compel people to give tithes. I believe this is despicable. Jacob vowed a vow to the Lord in Genesis 28 to give a tenth in response to God's protection and benevolence. I believe you can vow to give tithes out of gratitude for God's many blessing but the tenth is not a compulsory amount. The New Testament says encourages to give as you as been blessed.

The ministry of Jesus on earth was to meet the needs of others and we are supposed to continue this mission. Tithes help to carry the gospel to the world, so it was not abolished under a new covenant with Jesus. Read Mathew 5:17-19. No one should feel forced to give tithes, it should be a willing gift on our part because of our love and willingness to obey God's commands.

@ericstar2k Usually people misquote those versus to say we're still under Mosaic law (Which we're not) but I've NEVER seen anyone use it for tithes. the key to this entire section lies within the part where Jesus says: "For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."

Later in the gospel he fulfills the law so "till all be fulfilled" is apparent

@minsteven This was a response to people trying to trap Jesus no matter what his answer was. We cannot assume this verse is referring to a tithe when there is no justification for it. There exists no temple, priests, or New Testament tithing directions for Christians. There are however new and different principals for giving.

As far as not being able to trust humans to give freely you can't trust humans to do ANYTHING right it is in our nature to like sinful or bad things overall

My personal observation is b4 my mother went to work she wld always tell me what she wanted done b4 she came back home and b4 she left she wld always remind me what to do. God all knowing knew he would go silent for 400yrs & the last thing he says is to pay your tithes. again i agree we shld give freely but there is no structure to it b/c ppl cant be trusted to give freely & the church

I have a question. Jesus said render the things to ceasar that belong to him and to God the things that belong to him. He was refering to money. So if ceasar reqires taxes aka tribute. Then what does God require? I feel also we should give freely but we are talking about humans and no one can be trusted to give freely some but the majority will not. I believe God established the tenth b/c God is a God of order so that it would not be any arguments or questions on what to give God. Abraham. c pt2

@Krazie316 In earnest. Mr. Lewis states several times in this video that Christs manifestation overrides the old testament. Christ himself said that is not the case. I'm not trying to come off as argumentative, and I realize there's a whole other point to this video, but every time I hear someone talk about Christ "overriding" the Old Testament Matt 5:17 always goes through my head.

@Krazie316 Yeah, I think I get hung up on the "Till heaven and earth pass" part but I can see how the "till all be fulfilled" may indicate the atonement. Sometimes I hear people sight Matt 5:17 to validate Leviticus 18:22. But those sort of contentions I will leave to Christians to sort out. Anyhoo thanks for the perspective, at the very least it should help to keep me from dwelling on it whenever I hear someone testify in contradiction to Abrahamic law.

@PrecambrianLullaby Only if you read that part wrong (which can in fact be done and is done very often) That verse is saying heaven and earth will pass before anything changes before the law is fulfilled. But later in the Gospels Christ fulfills the law. He became an eternal sacrifice. Before he did nobody could go to heaven they were all in a department of hell called paradise.

@Krazie316 Romans 1:27 as example, yeah. I've seen Leviticus sighted more frequently. (mostly by a type of person who'd have contentions with Pastor Lewis even. In those cases the specificity to that book is curious to me.) I'm re-looking into some of it, it seems like Paul was a bit friendlier about the subject, but still pretty clear. I may be watching your video on Paul at some point.
