anne edwards is a rag paper biographer. Shirley's Child Star book is more interesting. According to Jane Withers, she loved Shirley and was not allowed to play with her. She had to "wash her hands" before she went into a scene with Shirley. I'd recommend viewing TCMPS pt 1 here on youtube-it's hard to find in a search - but it's an entire show dedicated to former child stars; including Jane WIthers as a guest for other perspectives. :) I <3 Jane - she was amazing in a different way. :)
Remember- there are always two sides to every story. I highly recommend reading Shirley's book, Child Star, to hear Shirley's point of view about filming "Bright Eyes." Shirley's memories are of Jane teasing and making fun of her on the set.
I have read her book, I have even gone as far as to read it 3 to 4 times. Remember though Shirley also said in her book that she was an angel either, One of her recollections has to do with the doll (that Jane had in the movie) Shirley and Jane got into a fight about it, And it was Shirley that ended up with the doll that Jane really wanted and Shirley did not. (by Shirley's own admission)
Jane Withers had a MOUTH that was sure and an opinion and when dozens of kids doing Shirley Jane skits were arrested on trumped up charges like tresspassing, picking apples off of the ground, the whole court could hear Jane Withers screaming at the judge all sorts of profanities and she wasn't even in the courtroom...YET. Ya gatta love a gal like that!
This was on TMC? I'm surprised. MGM owns Tmc, and they only ever mention Shirley if they play a movie she did with them. Isn't it funny? After all these many years, MGM is STILL jealous Fox got Shirley! XD
love this video!!! her look, smile, voice, curly hair...how adorable all they are =) She was a REAL FANTASY back in the days...still she is, and always will be.
I love this video! A great look at Shirley's childhood. I wish they had quoted someone other than Anne Edwards, though. I read her biography of Shirley and it cast the most negative light possible on her mother, Gertrude. But I love that interview with Jane Withers!

Yes, and the OTHER side to the story is that Sol Wurtzel, the producer of
Bright Eyes was so enchanted with Jane Withers, he signed her to an exclusive deal. Don't feel sorry for Jane. She had a terrific career at Fox

Was that Lauren Bacall doing the commentary? Or was it Kathleen Turner?
I'm going for Lauren Bacall though.

Kathleen Turner
Alice Faye (Shirley's co-star at Fox)
provides the commentary in MOST of the documentaries, such as "The Biggest Little Star"

Shirley free-lanced with MGM and Paramount before signing her excusive deal with Fox. Fox gave her un-rivaled status!
