To me, this was/is what rocknrollsoul is all about. Effortless guitar mastery, raw vocal power, total charismatic control of the audience and stage. Love it. Glen
Wow!, I think this tour passed through Marrero, Louisiana, because I saw Steve playing in a dive joint, had about 20 people, I think I was the only one who knew who he was, amazing to think!, but he had the same cover-alls on, and used the same guitar, had to be! this tour! The name of the bar was ,The Arches, now it is the jefferson parish water co. maint.building. everytime i pass there a always think about that nite i saw Steve Marriot, and thats no bullshit! I was lucky to be there!
when the stones were looking for another guitarist in the 70's (prior to hiring ron wood), they auditioned marriott... steve and keith hit it off so well in the audition that it made mick feel insecure, so mick gave the thumbs down to steve joining the band..
back in the day , you could always hear humble pie live waffling on the summer winds coming from some distant party , we actualy preferred them over anyone , inc the stones , we didnt need no doctor , stevie marriott , the rock in roll , doctor ..
@MrHarpman123 Go visit the Drakensburg Mountains in South Africa/ Transkei/Lesotho next time you have a holiday, thats where its grown. I stayed with the Pondo natives ( enemy of the Zulu) for 3mths way back in the early 70's. I can assure it is very potent stuff.
No, Steve quit Small Faces because the remaining members didn't agree to hire Peter Frampton as a new member so he formed Humble Pie with Peter, Greg & Jerry and later invites Brian Jones who pased away the week of the first rehearsals.
Jimmy Page invited Steve Marriott to joint the "New Yardbirds" Robert Plant was a huge fan of Steve, just listen Whole Lotta Love is a tribute to Steve Marriott LZ version is more closer to the Small Faces version than the onie by Willie Dixon
every post is so true about Steve... Every time i log on to youtube, I always wind up watching Steve Marriott in one of his bands. Just wish I could have saw him live. I got to stationed in England just 4 months after he had passed. What a bummer. When ever I go out to a bar, I always look for his music on the juke box.
I've seen everybody from 1965 to 1975 including the Beatles, and I mean EVERBODY, and Humble Pie was the BEST live band I ever saw...period, full stop
And to think Steve turned down Jimmy Page when he was offered front man for Jimmy's new Group Zeppelin. It would have been interesting with another guitarist in the Group!
You get a voice like this come round every 50 years or so. So make the most of Steve Marriot because you're unlikely to hear anything as good as his voice in your lifetime.
I too saw these guys in 1972 I think, probably at the Forum in LA or Long Beach Arena. Those were the days. Steve Marriott had a big voice, too bad he doesn't get more credit. Loved the Pie.
I saw them in...I think 70, maybe 71. Steve was like an explosion going off every minute. He would cock back and spit ten feet all over us. I was right up front and every one there seemed to take it as a privilege to be spat upon by him. As I look back, I know it was. I would give my right testicle to go back to that night and watch him live one more time. He was truely a sight to behold.
"The blonde semi-solid blues guitar, two humbucker pick-ups mounted on a solid block of wood in an acoustic guitar shell, which provides a massive tonal range. The harsh electric top and the plummy mid-bassy tones used in jazz and blues were both able to be used in this epitome of an electric guitar."
"No mangers, no record companies, total control... I can work when I want to and where I want to. I much prefer it this way. No big money means no hassles." RIP soulful Steve
Found HP CD today, got me to listening. What a great voice and guitar player. Funny, like to see Adam Lambert sing this song, he has the range, but maybe not the lows. Great, great voice.
actually the original main guitar player for Humble Pie was Peter Frampton!! Frampton said he always just wanted to play guitar.Steve was the front man and Frampton set on the side and wailed!!
check out steve marriott memorial concert. all these big names singing his best songs. none of even come close to the great man. if he were still with us he'd be headlining glastonbury or something just as grand. followed by a nice few pints and pie and mash flown in from his favourite pie and mash shop!! top bloke!!!
I was introduced to live Rock n'Roll when my brother took me to see Humble Pie in Wildwood, NJ in 1971 at age 9! Still the best rock show I've ever seen. Great video!

Missed out on the Faces/Humble Pie thing but had the privilege of Official Receivers/Packet Of Three on the pub circuit many times. Great entertainer & all round good guy. RIP Stevie.

Allo Mrs Jones, How's yer Bert's lumbago? Buy everything you can find with Steve Marriot's name on it kiddies. Old Grampee here was lucky enough to see the Pie at the Academy of Music NYC Feb. 1975. Gerbing on the fans long b4 Johnny Rotten & rockin so much harder than Jimmy Page. Boy was I lucky to have witnessed that! These vids are fookin greeat!
man you guys are smokin somthin really good. first Marriot was the one substandard. granted the stones coulda did alot better than Ron Wood but Ronnie was slated to replace Taylor way before Taylor was out. fact is Keef didnt like Mick much because he was so much better than him.Keef and Ronnie were drinkin buddies and keef knew Ronnie would always know his place as 2nd guitar. Marriot was reduced to playing small clubs after Frampton left the pie. and died smoking in bed. I saw the pie in a bar
Gregyman fuck you was there any need for that comment ?? What the fuck have you ever done you deadbeat loser now go fuck off and die and give the world a break Steve Marriott is a LEGEND !!
I've seen Humble Pie and the Stones and I can attest to the fact that there ain't a stage in the world big enough for Marriot and Jagger. Marriot was a ball of insane energy. Sweating and spitting and going wild. I was standing right in front dodging his spit! He was amazing. If he became a Stone, he would have run over Jagger.
Do you think Jagger's ego could have handled a frontman as raw, powerful and full of fury as the mighty Steve? Unh-uh. Jagger would have been upstaged time and again, he wouldn't be able to handle it. I personally saw the Pie blow GFR, Black Sabbath, and others right off the stage. No band, EVER had the raw energy and fury of a live Pie show. EVER. PERIOD. Not before, not since.
Rock On in Heaven Steve and Greg. Best to Peter, Clem, and Jerry. You guys made rock history!
From a guitar players standpoint, the awesome Marriot would have picked up and continued the intensity of Mick Taylor era 'Stones. Ron Wood was more intent on playing "Im a Rolling Stone" than his guitar. The 'Stones were never as raw after Taylor left. Stevie woulda been blowing them away all the way until his untimely demise and everyone would have been better for it. RIP Steve !
PS. Do you know Steve Marriot played with Johnny Thunders too ?? How cool is that !?!?!
Great points ! Do you think either Bon Scott or Brian Johnson with AC/DC can hold a candle to Steve Marriott? They both had raw energy every night they performed. What a show Humble Pie and AC/DC would be on the same ticket !
Not quite true. Ronnie was born to be a Stone and is the ONLY guitarist that can weave a tapestry with Keith Richards. Marriott is fantastic, but in his own right. Not just as a guitarist, but as a singer as well. Remember, Clapton and Beck were there to try out as well, but they are too big to be a part of an ensemble like the Stones. Big name rock stars aren't interchangeable as we would hope them to be in other groups.
"there ya go".....man there's some really good guitaring done by as talented a rock singr as there ever was...cat was sooooooooooo good...wutashame he couldnt keep it together....wutawaste....rip steviem
Yes, I'd love to! Hope to see him playing again, end of November. He talks just the same still as they sound on the packet of three, live at dingwalls audio i listen too.
But I think Jim's singing voice is actually sounding more like Steve nowadays...that smokers edge to it!
He and Geoffrey are good mates and their gigs are very special too.
I'd much rather see them, than Led Zeppelin or The Police etc.
Marriott returned from the US and Frampton's studio in 1991 with his wife; He usually rolled his own cigs, but instead this time bought a regular pack at Heathrow. He and his wife got in a row at a friend's place and while the rest slept, Steve went home and lit one up while drinking. He then passed out. The cigarette ember fell and caught the rug ablaze, Steve was overcome by smoke and burned with the upstairs room. The 'chick' wasn't in the fire, only Steve died.
the best performer best singer and a very good guitarist ive ever seen on the stage even when he was skint he put a 100% in every time i seen him many times and when he got of the stage he whould be haveing a pint with you steve marriott top bloke r.i.p
Ever since I picked up Rockin' The Fillmore about 34 years ago I've been captivated by the mighty mijit's authoritative soul shouting, wailing white boy, blues voice.
34 years is it that long?! I bought the double vinyl but couldn't find the cd in the UK Managed to get a copy from the US on Ebay. saw them in Bristol after they returned from that tour minus Peter Frampton. Didn't matter Marriott made the band
Jerry Shirley once said that he thought Steve felt pretty hurt when Peter left, but carried on like nothing happened. Anyway, as you stated Steve was the main man in the Pie.
Bloody Great ballsy voice that ever existed!!! I've followed Steve ever sice the small faces and his art in songcrafting, great guitar work and his soulful, gut wrenching tones remain some of the best to date. What a gift you were to us all Steve... 'Rock On Forever!!!
Fine rockin' performance - Steve Marriott was not only the best soul shouter to ever emerge from the UK (even better than that Robert Plant guy) but he played a pretty mean guitar too. Great drummer. Great band.
I don't care if Marriot has a mullet or smells like one. lol I've seen everyone from Led Zepplin, to Audioslave, and never saw anyone better on stage than Marriot waswhether it was while Humble Pie was together or later on solo. Probably seen 500 what I would call big shows (at least 12,000 90,000) and I never saw anyone even in the same league as a live performer. If we are going to get picky about hair styles, has anyone looked at the heads coming out of the UK these days? Take the mullet
I saw Humble Pie in 1972 at the Hirsch Memorial Coliseum in Shreveport, Louisiana. I paid $5.00 for the ticket. I was 13 years old. It remains the best fucking concert I've ever been to, and I'm 48 years old, so I've been to many, many concerts. They don't make music like that anymore. How I miss those days.
why is everything judged by to days Fashions? Steve looked good for that time, Mullets were in fashion then. And we all get older, just wish he was still around to get even older. Besides, who really cears what he looked like when he could sing as good as that and give so much joy to the world.
Great shame the day we lost Steve. He had a lovely cottage near to where I lived (Moreton, Essex UK) and drove a gorgeous white Aston Martin which 'took off' once and landed in the river ! He must have had a liking for Essex as he was renting another lovely cottage in Arksden where he sadly died in a fire.
Wonder what he would be doing now if he'd lived ? Probably what he loved best - rocking on stage somewhere !!
Brings back great memories of seeing the official receivers, and packet of three. Live Marriotts voice was so powerful, that he didn´t need a PA. This shows that he was also a great player too. Nice!
ha i dont think so,so a fat ageing balding mullet bloke looks better than a young me with steve marriots 60s hairstyle,na dont think so,love steve marriot from the 60s,but not this bloke
Humble pie was a favorite band that I listened to back in the early 1970's I loved Mr.Marriott's raspy voice and guitar playing...I was very saddened of his untimely death...I was happy to find a DVD of a live concert performance... GOD REST YOUR SOUL...
thanks gliedo, i was precisely referring to the things you mentioned. apart from the similarity between you need loving and whole lotta love it's what you call 'the way to sing' that is clearly copied, intonation, ou s and ah s, blue notes. steve is the forerunner.
Ive read a Plant bio, and Robert was kind enough to acknowledge that whilst he was very proud of his voice and live performance, he couldnt do what Stevie did. Plant was a big Small Faces fan, he ran 'errands' for them... no doubt who is big influence was
listen to the small faces' first album (from 65 or 66)and you know where the likes of robert plant and paul rodgers (don't get me wrong, they're great singers) pinched to build their careers. does anybody know whether they have acknowledged steve's influence? to me steve is the first white soulman, a far better singer than jagger and he was around before joe.
he looks awful,i put this video on after watching the itchycoo park video and and look at how his fashion style went down the pan, whats with the shit balding mullet lol,hes still ace though
Speaking as a WOMAN, I'd have F***ED STEVE EXACTLY AS HE LOOKS HERE in a New York minute!!! Lennonla, didn't your mamma tell you the wise old saying "Beauty IS as beauty DOES"! Steve was ALWAYS A STUNNING BEAUTY!!!
Tisk, tisk..to be THIS senselessly belligerant AND ignorant at only TWENTY years of age...hardly OLD enough to have experienced ENOUGH of life's REAL troubles to become so NASTY a piece of work! I pity your family, I pity YOU! :(
As the lady said, you and your kin are to be pitied for your bigotry and ignorance.(If your lager lout attitude is just a pose, drop it--it's tiresome.) Also, learn some grammar--"your' and "you're" are not synonymous.
Steve returned home from a flight in 1991, late...He got home, had a couple drinks and a cigarette and fell asleep in his chair. The cigarette fell and started a fire. He never escaped.
this guy was a god, true no messing rock, saw him in Cheltenham pump rooms, real small venue, i could'nt here for a week, wicked!!! real shame how he died, what a waste.
I saw Steve live just a few months after this was filmed (Jerry was no longer in the band). It was in Sir George Robey, a pub opposite the Rainbow Theatre. It was the best concert I EVER saw. No limousines for Steve, he came to the gig by Underground and walked into the pub half an hour before show time, carrying his guitar. Apart from being one of the all time greatest rock singers he was a VERY underrated guitar player!
I heard that John Bon Giovi got a good schoolin' back in the late 80's, when he walked in on Steve at one of local pubs in England when he and his boys were on tour there.
Nor do I. I'm just glad you've put it here for all of us to enjoy. I have the DVD on order and I'm sure that once it arrives I will still watch this many times a day as I do now. After all, one can never have too much Steve Marriott.
To me, this was/is what rocknrollsoul is all about. Effortless guitar mastery, raw vocal power, total charismatic control of the audience and stage. Love it. Glen

I've seen Humble Pie and the Stones and I can attest to the fact that there ain't a stage in the world big enough for Marriot and Jagger. Marriot was a ball of insane energy. Sweating and spitting and going wild. I was standing right in front dodging his spit! He was amazing. If he became a Stone, he would have run over Jagger.
magprob 4 years ago 5
In the 70's Steve Marriot was a finalist to replace
Mick Taylor in the 'Stones. Must have been some
personality differences or something that led them
to pick the substandard Ronnie Wood over Steve
which is a shame because Steve would have been
so much better ! Oh well......
astroboy44x17 4 years ago
Consider this:
Do you think Jagger's ego could have handled a frontman as raw, powerful and full of fury as the mighty Steve? Unh-uh. Jagger would have been upstaged time and again, he wouldn't be able to handle it. I personally saw the Pie blow GFR, Black Sabbath, and others right off the stage. No band, EVER had the raw energy and fury of a live Pie show. EVER. PERIOD. Not before, not since.
Rock On in Heaven Steve and Greg. Best to Peter, Clem, and Jerry. You guys made rock history!
ArtfulDodger1218 4 years ago 4
Cool post.
=:^D
astroboy44x17 4 years ago
Steve sang a little bit on Thunders' "So Alone" album. The track was "Daddy Rolling Stone". I don't know if they ever performed live together though.
gorblimey61 2 years ago
Amazing song!!!. ANd as afar i know they never performed live together
clashcityrocker2007 2 years ago
Great points ! Do you think either Bon Scott or Brian Johnson with AC/DC can hold a candle to Steve Marriott? They both had raw energy every night they performed. What a show Humble Pie and AC/DC would be on the same ticket !
blueangeldad 4 years ago
Steve Marriot was great in his own way but he was not a Rolling Stone. To call Ronnie Wood substandard is a reflection of your own Small Mind.
magprob 4 years ago 2
maybe a reflection of his "small face" LOL
johnnykov 4 years ago
Not quite true. Ronnie was born to be a Stone and is the ONLY guitarist that can weave a tapestry with Keith Richards. Marriott is fantastic, but in his own right. Not just as a guitarist, but as a singer as well. Remember, Clapton and Beck were there to try out as well, but they are too big to be a part of an ensemble like the Stones. Big name rock stars aren't interchangeable as we would hope them to be in other groups.

I'd much rather see them, than Led Zeppelin or The Police etc.
anyday 4 years ago
The Three Mariners, Oare, near Faversham, Kent UK.
he was singing with guitar, as a blues/folk duo with Geoffrey Richardson, multi-instrumentalist(Caravan, The Penguin Cafe)
...Some own stuff, and covers like 'Wild horses' by Rolling Stones, songs by Ronnie Lane, Dylan, Clapton, Kinks etc.
They are playing at Colchester Arts centre, on November 2nd and The Horsebridge Centre, Whitstable on november 23rd 2007

Saw him play a few times. "Hurt By Love" One of his later Humble Pie songs proved he could still crank 'em out. The man put on a great show!

STEVE MARRIOTT FOR PRESIDENT, 2008!
He'd make a better President as a dead man than any live candidate we've ever elected! Think about it!

Ever since I picked up Rockin' The Fillmore about 34 years ago I've been captivated by the mighty mijit's authoritative soul shouting, wailing white boy, blues voice.
gorblimey61 4 years ago
34 years is it that long?! I bought the double vinyl but couldn't find the cd in the UK Managed to get a copy from the US on Ebay. saw them in Bristol after they returned from that tour minus Peter Frampton. Didn't matter Marriott made the band
oneoldgit 2 years ago
Jerry Shirley once said that he thought Steve felt pretty hurt when Peter left, but carried on like nothing happened. Anyway, as you stated Steve was the main man in the Pie.
gorblimey61 2 years ago

JesusIsDemocrat 4 years ago
why is everything judged by to days Fashions? Steve looked good for that time, Mullets were in fashion then. And we all get older, just wish he was still around to get even older. Besides, who really cears what he looked like when he could sing as good as that and give so much joy to the world.
itchycoonz 4 years ago
Great shame the day we lost Steve. He had a lovely cottage near to where I lived (Moreton, Essex UK) and drove a gorgeous white Aston Martin which 'took off' once and landed in the river ! He must have had a liking for Essex as he was renting another lovely cottage in Arksden where he sadly died in a fire.
Wonder what he would be doing now if he'd lived ? Probably what he loved best - rocking on stage somewhere !!

Plant was a big Small Faces fan, he ran 'errands' for them... no doubt who is big influence was
Gidster34 4 years ago
listen to the small faces' first album (from 65 or 66)and you know where the likes of robert plant and paul rodgers (don't get me wrong, they're great singers) pinched to build their careers. does anybody know whether they have acknowledged steve's influence? to me steve is the first white soulman, a far better singer than jagger and he was around before joe.
