The ambiguity of the film is just.. wonderful. For anyone who has ever read Weber's Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, it also invokes some amazingly deep themes, without ramming it down your throat (or hitting you over the head with a bowling pin).
The parents of a child become advocates of the new radical politics of the anti-Franco forces in Spain and the Allende government in Chile. the Child is deeply sceptical and acts as a kind mediator between the views of her parents and her grandparents who are fans of General Charles de Gaulle who dies during the film in 1971 (?). There was such a lovely warm, laughing atomosphere in the cinema while this film was playing.
I absolutely loved this film, and I get the impression most of the few that disliked it were probably after Pirates 3 or Coronation Street: The Movie.
TopDog69's right. I have to listen to this show every week as part of my job ( one of the very few highlights of my week)....Mayo delights in playing the ignorant devil's advocate to Kermode's movie uber-nerd. It's a necessary job to stop the show going over the heads of the daytime Radio 5 audience. Mayo's pretty bright and a good presenter all things considered.
Can I just add, I REALLY don't watch films as Mayo describes. If I like a film, I'll watch it several times in the cinema - on my own, if needs be - and then buy the DVD and watch it repeatedly. I don't have the capacity to get even all the plot points on first viewing, never mind all the thematic elements.
i cant express how excited i am about watching this film! i've heard folks from the states reviewing 'There Will Be Blood' and they say that its the kind of film that stays in your head for a long time. PTAnderson is an absolute sensational director. Cant wait for this!
Quite possibly the greatest film that Stanley Kubrick never made.

Although City of God is fantastic, imo, TTWB is just perfect.

"Blame it On Fidel" a beatiful warm humanistic French film set in the south of France in the late sixties, early seventies. Came out last year.

KK. Name a recent film that you believe is better than There Will Be Blood. Go on.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
fantastic tbh.
rhb999 3 years ago 2
Yep. Loved The Assassination. But There Will Be Blood has better acting. Boom boom.
The cinematography in Assassination is amazing: TWBB's cinematography is transcendent (AND awardwinning btw :P)
I love Assassination. But I love TWBB so much more. :D

hahaha i agree there will be blood was very well shot
but i gotta say i do love Roger Deakins, though Elswit is fantatic to haha
Although i know everyone argues that Casey Affleck wasn't that good in assassination, but i thought he played Ford well XD
But Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano. God they were good haha

I watched this movie a second time, in a nearly empty cinema, and was struck.
The "bastard from a basket" sequence where Daniel talks to his son... made me cry. For the first time ever in a cinema.
I cant speak too highly of this movie.
And yes, I will probably watch this movie again. XD

Fantastic film.
While DDL's performance is one for the ages...
I just personally prefer his part in Gangs Of New York.
Bill the Butcher is one of my favourite movie characters ever.
