@SecretsOfLongevity should you drink that pea/sunflower/celery/cucumber juice mix everyday, or will your body start to build an intolerance for the same sprouts daily?
This was one very usefull video. I watched the three part series and was very impressed. I have been thinking of a business to get into and really like the thought of this.Need to think it over though as a building with heat for winter and such can add up to expense. Thanks for the info. I think I could get into doing this kind of work.We just bought 20 acres and I am working on a back to eden garden. We need the greens back in our life. Thanks again.
@CrazyHipster12 It's my friends sprout farm, I was using it for the demonstration. I have a single light rack like the multiple ones he has though.
The water was coming from a well. Very few municipalities in Ontario actually have fluoride in their water thankfully, but some have tons of chlorine.
l have up to 60 - 70 trays of soil based tray greens in rotation during winter and a few dozen containers of soil-less sprouts during winter. My compost is like a mountain too LOL. l sprout about 25 different seeds.
Great series. Thanks so much for the information. I want to do this as a business but I am unsure how to proceed. This is a great start, on my research. I would welcome any additional information that would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
I live north of Toronto and I grew about 18 trays of wheatgrass at a time on a homemade shelving unit - 3 shelves at varying stages) with 4 flor. bulbs per shelf. This was during the winter and I found that the only 'cool' and dry enough place was the garage. So I cleaned and set it all up. The wheatgrass turned out awesome (until I tried to switch to baby blanket-ugg MOLD even with GSE and h202) , however my HYDRO bill was HUGE! How long do you HAVE to have the lights on for?
Your videos are AWESOME!!! I've done wheatgrass in the past, but not the peas yet, this was just great to watch. Simple, straight forward and my kids, especially my son was totally impressed... great teaching tools for homeschoolers as well!
@SecretsOfLongevity I agree, that is where I get mine too! They also have wonderful customer service. Worth noting is that if you want to buy 'bulk', you can call them and they will email you the price list for bulk. If you order from their site small quantities they have free shipping over a certain amount... bulk is WAY cheaper but you do have to pay for shipping. Still works out to pennies a pound. Split with some other families and it's cheaper!
@j2theon05 I too would love a cheaper source for soil and trays. I don't grow for profit, just family and sick friends but even with dh and I and the kids we can burn through a tray of wheatgrass a day! I've been buying my soil and trays locally (they are even harder to find in the winter). But being a 1 income family it's getting really expensive (the trays alone cost me $1.70 each) when my relatives don't bring the trays back or break them ;-(
@SecretsOfLongevity the trays are proving difficult to find during the winter. I've tried all the local grow places including Bradford Greenhouses and they won't have their 'seed' trays they call them (10x20) in until February sometime ;-( She offered me used ones with holes in them for 1.99... I said EACH? she said yes... I said oh my, thanks anyway ;-( I tried online but the cheapest I could find was about $1.10 in the U.S...+ ship/duty, zehrs doesn't have anymore even of the 1.49 ones ;-(
How many times do you harvest your sunflower sprouts? I harvest my wheatgrass twice, and sunflower sprouts once. I'd like to hear your opinion on that.
@serene141 Do you mean how many times per tray? Only once as the nutrition levels drop drastically in all sprouts and grasses after roughly 10 days, whether harvested or not...
have you heard that alfalfa is not really that great for you as a sprout? i got my ideas from ''from seed to table'' and ''nourishing traditions'' and they both recommend against alfalfa. what do you think?
@ThomasDeanNordlum There are minute amounts of toxins in many green plants and they shouldn't be eaten in large quantity for long periods of time. L-Cananavine (the toxin in alfalfa) is so dilute in the green sprouts that you'd literally have to eat a wheelbarrow full every day for a couple of weeks to get Lupus-like symptoms. The experiments done on monkeys where they died from alfalfa was the ground up non-sprouted seed and so much more could be consumed.
Thanks for the detailed information regarding growing sprouts, especially the harvesting and storage--you're right about the nausea that comes from letting the wheatgrass grow too long.
I like all the information that you give but I need to know the size of your tray. What are the dimensions? Thank you!

...also, what kind peas do you use for spouting.
MrSeanRe 1 week ago
@MrSeanRe Roughly 1 foot by 2 feet and they're speckled peas that Mumm's sprouting seeds sells.

@wendypape Only about 3 days total. This setup in the video which is around 100 trays per cycle costs my friend about $50 a month.

@SecretsOfLongevity sorry, I meant 24/7 or 1/2 day enough?
wendypape 1 year ago
@wendypape 24/7 is fairly standard. You could do half days but you might need it to be under the light for more than 3 days.

@wendypape Nuts that is pricy. If you look for specialty hydroponic stores you may be able to find them in the winter in bulk...

why do you prefer using soil for your sprout, rather than no soil process?
thanks for the great videos.
