  • The noise in the background makes me think the faucet is on, so I keep pausing and seeing if it is.

  • Paper Towns was pretty jokes.

If I may say so myself.

  • Grr.

See, this is what happens when I treat myself to a Vlogbrother video. It turns into a two hour playlist. Two hours that should be spent studying. Oops.

    *Continues watching videos*

  • 30 people own cars because they hate everyone else.

  • I've just found this video now because I've only been watching Vlongbros for about a year.

This is possibly the only video to unpretentiously talk about Immanuel Kant's formula of universal law. That is, “act only in accordance with that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it become a universal law.” I've not looked through the comments, but I'm sure the Philosophy-major nerdfighters noticed.

    DFTBA

  • "It's like when Britney released Toxic" This is beyond the perfect comparision for Hank.

  • In mkd, scorpions fatality was ripping out your spine

  • "The last time I saw you that angry, I was learning that being the older brother isn't necessarily the same thing as being the stronger brother."

I kind of love it when the Green brothers sneak tidbits from their childhood into their videos. :D

Is that weird? I've always found the past-dynamic between the two hilarious.

  • Whenever I feel like re-re-re-re-rewatching old brotherhood2.0 videos, this is where I begin :D

  • Mortal Kombat! YES! :DD

  • 3:02 excited John makes me smile.

  • I recommend to everyone recommending books: GOING BOVINE. Great book! fits most of what John said he likes in a book...

  • Thank you for correcting Hank on the fatality nonsense, Mortal Kombat fatalities need to be remembered and revered.

  • Have you ever read the Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie? Because you should. Just to let you know.

It has love, some what you could consider a car chase, funnieness, real life, and charm. READ IT!

  • Have you ever read the Absolute True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie? Because you should. Just to let you know. :D D.F.T.B.A.

  • I'm pretty sure John Travolta's acting career was back for, like, a minute. It's gone now. Now, he's just crazy.

  • i want a small independent book store within walking distance , that is where most of my money would go , in fact if you get rid of school lunches and auto insurance in the back 7 months I've been working 100% of what i make has gone into buying books , book reading nerdfighters ftw.

  • Although I see the point of not liking depending on having an underclass (which I also do not like) I would like to point out that having or not having a car doesn't determine your social class. In North America everything is far apart and in many places public transit is inadequate (which is not good) and life is difficult without a car. However in many places such as China things aren't so far apart and public transit is better so people don't need cars. Just saying. NERDFIGHTERS.

  • Wow that comment about the economy and cars was incredibly insightful, and made me think again about the "necessity" of inequality (or dependence on an underclass)

  • It's acceptable to get fatalities confused between palette swaps.

  • You live in Indiana?!

    GASP

I will track you down... :D

AHHH I share a state with him and you all don't! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

  • I just bought two of John's books, thanks to becoming a Nerdfighter. A fellow Nerdfighter said John was an "AMAZING" writer, so I bought Katherine and Alaska.

By the way, you guys should mention trucks too. I own a Ford, which guzzles fuel pretty bad; yeah, I feel bad, but I don't drive very often...

  • Where I live, our public transportation is crap We do have a couple of grocerystores within walking distance though, which is nice. But there hasn't been a book store period in my end of town in years.

  • 1:58-2:46

    Omygoshyes.

I've never met anyone else who understand this.

  • who is he

  • Hummer owners increase world suck, and that is not good. And you dying would really increase world suck.

  • Yes , if you'd die , it would totaly raise sucklevels all over the world. ='(

  • yes, you dying would suck.

and i'm gonna get a hybrid when im older :D

  • This is all very Kantian. Like, the categorical imperative, and all that fun stuff. I think Kant was a douche, but you're awesome, and I agree with you.

  • Whats with Johsn obsession with Britney Spears?

  • I wish I could live without a car, but the things that would need to happen for that to happen seem unlikely. First, I could walk 8 miles a day to and from work in what are 0 degree or colder temperatures for 3 months out of the year. Second, I could start earning 3 times as much as I do so that I could live within reasonable walking distance of work. Neither of these things are likely to happen, and that sucks.

  • theres a hummer dealership across the road from me

everytime i look at it i think "god thats so bad for the environment"

    =[

  • yay Papertowns

  • Comment 175:

But surely if you were to send them a copy of Paper Towns that would have to be textual communication...? wouldn't it?

  • He could have just sent it to Katherine. haha.

  • I've always tried to live by the same philosophy: if everyone in the world did this, would it be a bad thing? But rarely do I apply this to decisions that seem so natural or day-to-day (such as owning a car) but only to seemingly important ones. Apparently now is the time to question whether things like owning a car are to remain "natural" necessities.

  • I love Mortal Kombat. Hooray on the book club mate. I need to get reading Looking For Alaska.

  • There must be far too many comments for you guys to read by now, but I hope you see this one. Read the Ishmael series by Daniel Quinn. It speaks to all your points in this video and I think it will blow your mind.

  • No, scorpion had 2 one where he breathed fire and one where he ripped your spine out.

  • I can't believe its been a year!

  • Ahhh... existential isolation.

I love those books too... Go Camus!

  • since i have condition ware i cannot read books I cant read Steppenwolf by Heramn Hesse so if someone please msg me and tell me all about ti that wuold be grate

  • mail it

  • The south isn't very great with public transportation either, which I do not like at all.

  • i so did my happy dance when he called Hank out on the fatality. so much awesomeness.

  • heh! it's my birthday video!

  • These videos are made of awesome, but why are they only rated pretty cool? I VOTE AWESOME

  • then i would die....that would suck!

  • thanks. now i'm feeling emo

  • the name "I Rock 71" kind of reminds me of "Nigel is cool 657"

  • living a life that's dependent on an underclass... wow. i really, very much agree.

  • my birthday! :-)

  • Well, in New York you didn't need a car because everything was within walking distance. Now, things are much more spaced out and walking would be very rough. So would owning a bike. There is a point, I feel, when some people NEED a car.

  • If everybody in the world owned a car the gas would run out tomorrow.

  • not so actually...Alberta alone has enough oil sand to sustain the world for (what I've heard) 100 years. That's not including the middle east, or Africa, or South America.

Not saying we should continue abusing it...we should be trying to find something new to use that's not as dirty. But tomorrow...nope, we're still good~ We've got time to figure things out!

  • Alberta has enough oil to sustain the world, if only the current percentage of people owned cars. If everyone had a car, we'd be screwed.

  • :O You said vitriolic. That's my favorite word...

  • You know, Kant said that everyone should live by morals and standards that could be applied as a universal standard. Apparently, you're a Kantian thinker, John. Congrats!

  • I really really liked the points John makes in this video. I mean its one thing to feel like you're taking for granted what you own, but its entirely another to think of it as a contribution to environmental disaster.

  • oh man. i wanna read the book now!

  • hey... this was a very informative video... thank you very much =)

  • I agree; automobiles should be restricted to everyone but cops, ambulance-people, bus drivers, and truckers. I live in Oklahoma City, where EVERYWHERE is an auto-ride away. However, I believe that--if autos were taken away from all except those I mentioned--the economy would adjust to make every building half-shop/half-residence. Cool?

  • "It's like when Brittney Spears released 'Toxic'" - awesome! Luv U John!!!

  • Living in Maine,(but growing up in D.C.) it is the lack of public transportation that is most frustrating. Transportation effects the jobs you can take in terms of distance. If your car breaks, or it is too expensive to purcase, fuel, and insure, then that limits your opportunities.

  • Can you send it to your mom and then have her send it to him? Or Can you send it to Catherine instead? Loopholes perhaps?!?!

  • Ahhh,cognitive dissonance,the bane of environmentalism

  • i thought sub zero ripped out the heart?????

  • Pople are going to go rob Hank of that draft. LOLz

  • Since you resurfaced the book club, you should definatly read at least one Chuck Palahniuk (author of Fight Club and soon to be the new movies Choke and Invisible Monsters) novel.

  • For many years, I reviewed Palahniuk's novels for a magazine (I've read all of them, and like some of them quite a bit, although I think some of his books have a bit too vapid of a core for me). -John

  • I think the key is public transportation.

  • One of the most insightful vlogs that I have seen yet. I learned yesterday that if everyone lived like me we would need 3 and a half planets. Thats just sad..:(

  • Wow! This is actually some really good insight John... It actually got me thinking... Kudos, Mr. Green.

  • Aww. I want to read a draft of Johns book.

OKAY. I've got a solution for the no-textual-communication problem.

You could send the draft to ME, and then I could pass it on to Hank.

Cause then, you're only textually communicating to me. And I'M textually communicating with Hank.

    Brilliant.

  • I also live in Indianapolis and I hate that to live here you pretty much need to have a car.

  • I believe I'll be looking forward to reading Paper Towns when it comes out. Good luck on that, John.

  • damnnnnnnnn, you're a nerd.

  • Yes. That's the idea.

  • I used to live in Fort Wayne and it was pretty much the same thing.

  • if only u had just kept it at " i used to live in fort wayne , and it was pretty much the same" it wouldve ryhmed *shrugs*

  • Ahhh... =)

  • I love it when people comment and call Hank and John nerds. It's the stupidest insult in the world because that's the whole point of these movies. It just proves that the commenter has missed the point.

  • Here's how you solve the manuscript problem.

Send the manuscript to Katherine only. In a video blog to Hank, say that the manuscript is for Katherine only, and tell him that he should "DEFINITELY (not) steal the manuscript from her"... but say "not" really quietly, so you technically did not tell him to steal it, although you strongly strongly suggested it.

  • I can't wait for Paper Towns to come out!

  • Well to solve your problem with sending Hank the drafts you can address them to Katherine in which you are textually communicating with her not Hank

  • guess what john! [this is totally off topic] i finally found an abundance of katherines from our school library, and it was on display too! i'm on about page 60 and i love the book. too much math terms, but i like it =p

  • My school library doesn't have it! It's upsetting! I read Alaska from that library and am on a mission to find a library with Katherines and with Paper Towns.

  • paper towns isn't out yet. I don't think.

  • yeah, but in October when it comes out.

  • true. Me too!

  • ummm are the bros like totally dead or something cuz theres only 57 more min to post and there was no post yesterday right? correct me if im wrong

  • This was the posted "yesterday" (Thursday). Hank's video is still being dealt with by Youtube for some reason. We're working on it. -John

  • cool

  • John, easy solution for your non-textual way of getting the book to Hank.

Just give two copies to Kat, and whatever she does with it from there isn't you *wink wink*

  • You Blinked Like FOur Times Threwought THe Whole Video...THats Weird

  • You Blinked Like FOur Times Threwought THe Whole Video...THats Weird

  • You Blinked Like FOur Times Threwought THe Whole Video...THats Weird

  • You Blinked Like FOur Times Threwought THe Whole Video...THats Weird

  • Still haven't bought the first two books. Neeeeeed them.

And you could, uh, make a series of vlogs in which you read the draft aloud and email them to Hank. (But that would so kill his harddrive and I'm not sure if he loves you enough to suffer through that...)

    =3

  • How old are you boys?

  • Umm.. let me guess...

    Hank: 27 Years old

    John: 30 years old.

  • Thanks for guessing their ages. I am 20, and I know they look and sound older, but I was just wondering.

  • I love you. Great Mortal Combat correction.

  • Kombat

  • Totally, I just was testing you.

MK3- best of the Mortal Kombats!!!

  • You are wise in the way of... knowing which kombat is best. (yea strangle some sense out of that one)

  • actually john, it was assigned in april. or late march. i'm going to find your already published books as soon as i remember to, and i will get paper towns as soon as i can!~

  • Aww I don't want to wait until next year for the book :(

  • i love u guys.

  • September 2008?

I think I'm going to die of impatience!

  • "There's something pretty sick about living a life that's dependent on an underclass"

    Well said

  • when and where can i get paper towns? I want to read it!

  • Not till September of next year. In the meantime, you'll have to do make do with the two novels of mine that have been published so far. -John

  • There should be a Nerdfighter trial run of the book..say... in a month. :P  Then all nerdfighters could give pre-release review boasting it's importance as a must read.. so it makes the NY Times Best Seller List before its release date. Yahayyyyy!! {{{giggling}}}

  • perhaps u should just risk the wrath of the nerdfighters and go ahead and get punished???

  • You said something really deep about what kind of life we could be leading if we depend on a lower class...That's really good. I'm going to think on that one.

  • I think Hank looks more like a John and John looks more like a Hank. Hank is a macho name.

  • I always thought this, too.

  • About the getting the draft to him without textually communicating, couldn't you just email it to Kathrine?

Or I suppose you could read it to him over a video conversation, but that would be less practical...

    Great video. As always.

  • I can see u as a Bass player.... Bass players are the best.

John as a Challenge, learn to play Bass guitar!

  • YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! i want to read paper town

  • great topic, should definately do more discussions!!!

  • deep stuff! living a life that depends on the existance of an underclass... scary point

  • Send Paper Towns to your mother and have her send it to Hank.

  • Good...idea... =]

  • totally going to check out Deep Economy..and yes, I'd go green if I could.

  • You could make a voice recording of paper towns and send it to Hank. it's not the same as reading, but in the current situation, it would be a good substitute.

  • John, if you send the the draft of your book to Katherine, is that against the rules, or is only directly textually (is that even a word) communicating with Hank that is against the rules? What if you have the Yeti send it to Katherine... then neither of you are directly involved in the textual transfer... just a thought :D

  • oh great we are going to die.

I totally agree with JOHN! New York has the things every one should have. But once you move to a place like oh I don't know Utah you all of the sudden need a car. Phish.

  • I don't want to own a car. They're smelly.

And my bicycle gets me everywhere I need to go :-)

  • In the meantime can the brotherhood 2.0 reading list have 'the color of water' by James McBride.

  • I live in Sydney, Australia and I've only ever seen two hummers. I also feel entitled to own a car, I'm only 17 so I have whatever my dad got me, a crappy car, but when I can afford to I want to get a hybrid car, or atleast switch to gas, which is supposed to be better for the environment.

I'm passionate about lots of things in life, but sometimes the lesser evil is the best you can do...

  • Can I ask why you feel entitled to own a car? I like having one, and my wife would find it very difficult to get my children to school without one, but I don't think I'm entitled to own one. (If we didn't, I think we'd be spending a lot more money on Taxis.) At least I live close enough to work to be able to walk or ride my bike. I suppose the lesser evil in your case is catching a train when you can. I love trains. I wish we had trains in Whyalla.

  • The lesser evil would be catching a train, if a. they were reliable, and b. there wasn't the safety issue. (i live in a bad area). Plus I live about an hour and a half away from school, by car. So instead of my parents dropping me off then coming back to the area we live in and the picking me up and then going back home, I drive to school, park the car and use it to come back home. Much more friendlier for the environment.

  • you know what i just realized it is September no the brotherhood will be over soon! please continue don't end the word ( i didn't know what to say but i just say word instead!)

  • i would LOVE to have public transportation available where i am. i live in a tiny little place in michigan that nobody knows about and i always have to drive to one end of town or another. it's a total waste, really. but then again, devising an entire public transportation system for a town of about 10,000 people would be a little ridiculous. >:[

  • London's great for public transport, and bus is still free for me. Yay!

But I learnt today that if we use sustainable fuels and whatnot, although it won't be a particularly comfortable life per se, this planet could sustain 35 billion people. Insane!!

  • The main problem with the frequency of car use in America is the general lack of infrastructure we have. Big cities like NYC and Philadelphia have public transport systems, but at least half the country lives in areas where it just doesn't exist. A national transport system, like most European countries have, would help us out a lot.

  • There is a problem of scale in considering a national transport system in the US. The country is nearly as large geographically as the entire continent of Europe, with slightly over one-fourth the population density. In smaller countries with more densely packed populaces, a national transport system is more feasible.

I think a better solution would be to focus on getting good public transit systems into the larger urban areas.(not that this is a terribly deep idea)

  • But it's just a question of how the nation is designed. Because U.S. towns and cities were largely built after the advent of cars, they're designed for cars. We could just as easily design them for walking and biking and segways (like, say, Missoula Montana is designed). Of course there will always be farmers and ranchers who need cars--but if we change our cities and towns, fewer of us would need them. -John

  • John, after our dialog I went home and got this interesting transcript from a speech put on by Fred Singer, who raises some interesting questions about Global Warming. Just a different viewpoint...add a different perspective to the arguments! N3rDF16423R 4EVR

  • well actually sub zero freezes you takes your head off and throse it at your body making it shatter

  • how old are you?We are talking about mk-1 sub zero's fatality.

  • mk-1 is the only mk! (I'm 30--for more info on that, check out hank's song last week.) -John

  • Sub Zero has multiple fatalities. You named one; I named another. :) -John

  • I don't understand why people don't ride bikes more often. It would decrease carbon emissions and the obesity rate!

  • because we are getting lazy. i agree with you but not everyone will.

  • I just realised something. If all the towns in the world were made of paper... that would really suck during severe weather conditions and would increase the workloads of firefighters a hundred fold!

  • Cars would take over the world!

  • I ride the bus and metro every day! hurrah for public transit ...sometimes.

  • I ride the bus too! BITE ME, GLOBAL WARMING.

Actually, it'll take a few more people than just me riding the bus to get global warming to chill a bit. But at least they can't blame me directly if the rest fall into a firey demise. :p

  • "like jeans with high waists, the Indonesian economy, and the acting career of John Travolta...!"

  • Speaking of Books clubs -- *coughs* Mr.Teen Fiction writer... you really have a knack for err, shall we say "Ecchi" writing. And making bad habits for young folks to get into seem intriguing to some fragile little minds. Not complaining I'm enjoying the books immensely, but wow really? Teen fiction?

  • I feel very strongly that high-school students can read critically, and are able to read a novel without thinking that all the events that occur inside the novel are events that they should replicate in their own lives. For a lively discussion of this topic, start a thread in the Brotherhood2 dot com forum. Thanks for reading. -John

  • Aye aye Cap'n.

  • do kids that cant drive count as the ppl of the world owning cars thing?

  • I suppose it would depend on the car to person ratio in your home...

  • You realize you are breaking your contract in a rather public forum (John).

  • I love that t-shirt

  • As do I!

  • Yay! You mentioned Indonesia! That makes me feel extra extra proud.

  • I live in Toronto. I live an hour and 15 min walk from where I work. I still walk to and from work most days and when I don't I take the streetcar. What I don't understand is in city with good transport while people feel the need to drive. My neighbour used to drive her car five mins away to get to work. Isn't that just a little sad..

  • Deep Economy eh? I'll have to check it out! You made me feel better about where I live (DC). I live right on the subway line and either walk or use the metro most of the time. I only drive when I have to (that's mainly because of road rage and not the environment, er, that was a joke regarding road rage everyone)

  • I read Deep Economy too and I feel the same way that one should be liable to the basic needs but these needs grow into wants and these wants become excess and McKibben frowned upon excess. More and Better should get back together.

  • speaking of books.. i just finished your abundance of katherines. very enjoyable. loved meeting your lebanese character, i don't believe i've read another book that spoke of my heritage in this context. thanks!

  • Glad you liked "Katherines," and totally psyched that you could relate to Hassan. Thanks for reading! -John

  • Don't worry John, I won't buy a car. Can't afford one, and can't drive. I don't really want to drive. I'd rather take a bus. Or buy a bike and ride it. Because as of right now I do not own a bike.

  • ahhh, the art of public transportation

and the subways and trains of my soul

    are roads to freedom

i want to live a life that isn't dependent on the fact that the majority of the world's population doesn't own a car... :/

    hmm. *seeks freedom from guilt*

ahh, i really do love the train, yes i must continue to ride it.

    ^_^

    ~mei-chan~

hehe Hank is to Dark Side as Britney Spears is to 'Toxic'

  • I can't even read what I want my AP English teacher is making us read the worst book right now it's putting me asleep I can't wait to see Papertowns next year

  • which book is it if you don't mind me asking?

  • Wuthering Heights and I'm not fully sure if it isn't that great but she is reading it to us and her reading skills are terrible

  • now i feel bad about owning a car...

  • this is a totally random question, but in a video a long time ago you said they are making a movie for looking for alaska, but using a different name... i was wondering if you know the diffenent name... again... totally random...

  • i believe he said it was "Famous Last Words"

  • That's correct. They won't be making a "Looking for Alaska" movie in the immediate future, though. (These things take a long time.) -John

  • yay for me not owning a car! I used to say I didn't drive cause I don't have a license.. but now I'm saying it's cause I want to... not kill people. Yay!

  • It has been suggested that we need to ride bikes more often. In the Ohio Valley the weather changes every other hour. Tis not a very good idea. It's ok to own a car in Indiana. Public transportation isn't readily available here. (Southern Indiana) Yet it makes you wonder exactly where allergies in the Ohio Valley really come from.... rambling on. Good vlog John.
