I go to a Christian Evangelical university. We have a show coming up next semester, and I would love to perform this song for it. This is the only place where I've ever seen it; I can't find it anywhere else. If you could find another version, or a complete version (with the ending, for ideas on that end) I would greatly appreciate it.
Top class. Regina Spektor is the most talented singer in this world. I have no words to describe this woman. This song. This voice. THIS VOICE.
When I die, whenever that is, I hope to God that I die listening to her music, because I would die smiling and completely at peace with this world and the next and the next and the next.
this lyrics arent bleak people just dont spent enough time and brain power to figure it out. they just see the surface meaning and take it as an insult without taking time to see what underneath
Devil is the master of disguise so Jesus could (theoreticly) be the devil pretending to be God's son - using cheap tricks like turning water into wine.
That's just one take on it. It could also mean that (organised) religion can lead to more darkness than light(ness).
That is exactly what I got from this song. She is calling Jesus the devil but I really am not suprised that she thinks this way considering many Jews think this but are too afraid to admit it. Really only the ebionite jews view jesus in a good light.
@justforthesparks I'm not even gonna claim to know Jesus'es full story (nobody can, really, but I dont even know the parts we're all supposed to :p) but seeing how all saints go trough a phase of temptation where the devil comes and tempts them, I think there must have been a moment where Jesus harbored demons.
@xxdiogenescynicxx That's not true.. Most Jews see Jesus as a prophet.. We all believe he was human, which is what Regina is saying. And that there is good and bad in everything, and everyone.
People worry so much about mocking. Honestly, if God exists, then he/she/it (or however you percieve God) will decide who Regina's mocking, and it's not your job to do that. She just saying what she thinks, and there's nothing wrong with that. She never said she was singing to praise God, I think she was only ever singing to sing.
Oh she's just so adorable! I'm obsessed

I heard she was pretty heavily influenced by Joni. It makes sense because they both have offbeat lyrics.

Mock mock is all i hear, here.
Too bad poeple are too blindingly unaware that
she is mocking God.
Some people sit here and listen to
her beautiful voice and think
she is not saying anything bad about him.
Also too bad she wastes her talent on these bleak lyrics.
Oh and not all believers force their religion on people so get ur facts right.
Just because some do that doesnt
mean you should classify us all believers as people who are judgemental.

Completly missed the point of the song.

I hardly think that she is calling jesus the devil. I think she is just trying to make a point that we are all human.

I think this song is beautiful because everyone is portrayed as ordinary.
Though that is probably what can bother people.
I think the song is more about defining or labeling things - good/bad, dark/light - and how you really can't.
It's not about religion. Or mocking it.
