Not much of a "How To", more of a "How I can". Beautiful sounding pan flute though. I have always wanted to learn so I have purchased several pan-flutes while traveling around the world, averaging in price from $10 to $50. They seem so easy to play, but I can never seem to get them sounding as good as I hear them. Is there a real difference (besides material) between a $10 and $100 flute? Or is it just practice makes perfect?
@mjasterita This just the first part of the video.. Yes there is a huge difference between the little toy flutes and what I am playing in our video. That is the way it sounds with a bit of practice. Visit our website for many more videos and see what you think.
Hey, how much are pan flutes on average? I've been wanting to learn how to play and I've looked on Ebay for them but i don't know if they're tuned. Can you help me out?
@SheWolf8765 Hello, Our flutes are really good instruments, in fact Disney uses about 12 of our panflutes in their Lion King Productions.. please visit our website and look and listen.

@Delta5D HI, Yes it is tuned in the 5 note Pentatonic scale. I also include my DVD video and several pages of printed instructions. PLus my help and support by email and phone.
Today I found this old pan flute my dad bought from Peru years ago. It works just fine and I would really like to learn to play at least a simple tune with it. Wish me luck!
@Madeyness Yeah I have a smaller one too, and it seems to not work very well. I was wondering if it's too small? Also, it's two rows stacked on eachother.
Hey I was wondering if i can play the theme song from 'Once Upon a Time in America' with the pan flute I recently bought. It's an Antara 10 pipe pan flute. The theme song is called, 'Cockeye's Song' by Ennio Morricone. If you happen to know how to play this song, it would be cool to upload a video on how to play it.
@MrHokieson Yes you can play sharps and flats.. with that technique of tilting and or lip/jaw movement. If you watch me carefully I do that on a few pieces.. Also its great for bending notes like in the Blues.. I hope you will visit my website, I think you might enjoy it :)
Hi I live in New Zealand and I own a 15 pipe flute, and it's not made of wood like the one you are playing in this video. however I would like to learn to play this instrument as they sound so nice. can you help me in any way?
Hey, i was wondering. im going to buy a pan flute this week, and i want to be able to play "the lonely shepherd" and i wondered what tuning my pan flut has to be then. Thanx, love ur videos!
@realjuvelive Well, his 10 pipe Pan flute is the only pentatonic Pan-flute he sells - the rest are diatonic. I have one of his 18 pipe tenors (diatonic) tuned to the key of G. You can, however, change the tuning of all his Pan-flutes because he is the MAN!!!!
Well, to be more descriptive, there are rubber stoppers in each tube that can be pushed up to make the note sharp, or push it down to make it flat.
I'd like to learn to play one of these things, but I feel like the one I have isn't very good. I just counted and it has 13 tubes, they're all kind of small, and some are angled differently than the others, so it's hard to get sounds out of them.
@wolfgirl44 Yes your instrument would be very frustrating to play. Stop by our website and I think you will see a huge difference between ours and the not-so-good instruments that get sold to people. Its a shame.
@shoedoctor99 INDEED!!!!! Expert village has amateurs do the pan-flute stuff, and they suck compared to Brad. Brad also does so much more than they could ever hope to do. They should remove the "expert" in expertvillage to "amateurvillage"
So in a 10 tube pentatonic the notes are for example GABDE. The other five tubes just repeat the same note pattern in a higher octave or are they tuned differently?
@LittlePsychoII You won't be alone, I include support by phone, webcam and email with my instruments.. also I give each person my DVD video and instructions.
Visit my website, send me an email or give us a call on our toll free number (see at site). Its the most amazing instrument... and fun.
OMG i have to learn pan flute i never had one in my hand and never played any thing but i will learn it i have to =D and i realy want to can i learn it from inter net without shool or something??? =P
Also, I would like to say I am very interested in purchasing your 15 pipe, $99.00 Pan Flute tuned in the key of G. I will be a new beginner, learning to play this instrument, but I am just wondering how the Higher note scale being on the left end of the P-flute instead of being on the Right end as some I have seen on the internet. If you can answer my question, & help me to better understand my concern, Then possibly I will order me one next month, for a gift to myself. Thanks so much.
@haeema Well, it can be on both sides, as there are left and right-handed pan-flutes. Edgar Muenala's pan-flute is an example of a left-handed pan-flute that has it's high notes on the right side, as opposed to a left-handed pan-flute wit the high notes on the left side. It really makes no difference, but if you are mostly right-handed, get a right-handed pan-flute (unless if you are ambidextrous and don't care which type you get :)). Best of luck!! I bought Brad's 18-pipe tenor, and I love it!!
Are there left & Right Handed Pan Flutes? When I sit at a Piano the higher note scale runs to my right on the Keyboard. I notice on your pan flutes, the shorter pipes, which make the higher note sounds, are on your (the Player's) Left. Why is this? It seems backwards to me, as one who plays a lot by ear, versus reading Music notes. However I have seen other pan flutes, that the shorter pipes ( higher sounding notes) are on the Player's Right. Yours all appear to be on your left.
@haeema First, we are happy to make you an instrument in either direction.
Left or right is fine. However, most people do not have a problem with the low note on the right hand side. In fact that is exactly the same as a silver flute, or saxophone, clarinet, etc. all of these instruments have the low note in the right hand. Imagine that you are sitting at a piano, and you are playing a scale from the lowest note to the highest. That is the exact same hand motion on the rightside panflute.
@Purplehaze1224 Our 10-pipe is tuned in a 5 note scale (pentatonic). Its great for making things up and improvising... where as the 15-pipe is tuned in a regular major scale, like a piano or silver flute. It can play anything including the 5 note scale. More versatile but not really any harder, but more choices in what you can play. Feel free to call us write from on online shop. We have a toll free number
@bloodpetals4me It's a pan flute tuned in a pentatonic mode. Pent-meaning 5 Tonic- meaning tone. 5 tones. Pentatonic is a type of scale based off of 5 pitches out of a scale. From the major scale, the 1st 2nd 3rd 5th and 6th notes in the scale make up the major pentatonic. EX: C major scale= C D E F G A B C EX: C major pentatonic= C D E G A that flute has two octaves of the same five notes. so as long as you're in the right key, you can't play a bad note.
@Eiravati If you want to sound like my videos you are going to need a good instrument. You can have fun on your 8 tube for a little while and then when you are ready for something better let me know.
@Grahhmiiie I am glad to hear that. I hope you will come by our online shop and give it a listen and look. I have a lot fun things to see and hear. Send me an email when you get there. Talk to you later...
@bloodpetals4me HI, my website is panflute (dot) net (no spaces and put a period instead of dot)
The scale I am using for this panflute is a 5 note scale (pentatonic) it is very ancient and is used in music all around the world. It is also used in jazz and blues and is great for improvising. Just close your eyes and play. Everything sounds good.
@iNoamfer A homemade 7 pipe flute can only take you so far. If you really want to do more and have a better sound, then come visit our site. Send me an email from there and we can talk about what you would like to do :)
@pharrellfan HI, My flute in this video is my 10-pipe pentatonic panflute. I call them Fun-Pipes, because the scale makes most anything you play sound good :)
PLease visit my website and email me direct from there, I can help you better that way.
This may sound like a stupid question, but can you play all the sharps and flats on the panflute, or are there only certain notes you can play on certain ones? And how do you do it...
Aloha Brad, I just ordered this fun pipe. I have absolutely no experience, but I find the sound so soothing, they play that alot in my country, and I guess its just a natural attraction.
These are our own Fun-Pipes you can see and listen to at my website panflute(dot)net Those Winston are very bad plastic flutes... toys. Send us an email from our website and I'll send you more information
hey i love the sound of the pan flute !! i want to make one for my physics project :) is it okay to use pvc pipe to make one or do you recommend othe rmaterial ??
I love it. Now i want one! lol celtic music has always been my secret love. and i love instruments like this. Ive tried ocarinas, finger pianos, normal pianos, but i find i have no real talent in any of them lol. I would love a pan flute but idk if id be able to play. then again if theres no finger holes i might be able to lol. Whats this the fun pipes? Im gunna look at ur website ur music is amazing keep it up
@soccerboy951 HI, I think it will be there in just a few days. If you ordered on Saturday then we had it out first on Monday.. takes about 3-5 days usually. Hang tight , it'll be there soon. I know its hard to wait :)
i just made some for my science class, and when i blow into them i don't hear anything. and i did all the research and cut them to be the right size for the note but i don't know what's wrong! help me!
@adagio311288 Its important to have a good instrument. On a bad instrument I would not have that sound you are hearing. Yes it takes practice.. no instrument will play itself.. but with a good instrument you see progress as you spend time learning. Check out my other videos and also visit my website. You can write me from there.
in romania an usually professional panpipes like gheorghe zamfir's instrument can cost almost 500euros...my panpipes costs 5years ago...300euros...it's made from bamboo material
Hey Brad, I was just thinking of the old Collegium Musicum Ensmble at UH and thought of you. And here you are on YouTube. Ain't this Internet amazing? ;-)
That would be kind of small to play much. You don't want to buy a toy and just be frustrated. We have some smaller instruments, but they are really good. You might want to visit our site and listen to them. I have a lot of audio and video on every page.
@MizuWeed You need to have a good instrument to play on. Then practice holding long tones on the highest notes you have. It is the focus of your airstream. When you have a good focus you can play softly and sweetly. Write to me at our website.
Our 10-pipe pentatonic (FunPipes) gives you a nice range to play different pieces. 7 pipes is going to feel limiting in a very short time. Come visit our site and see..
@midlands72 Yes at the beginning. Mostly because you are wasting most of your air and so you need to breath for each pipe. Be sure to use your tongue for each note as you start. Tu Tu Tu, that will give them a good start. As your air becomes more focused you will be able to play many pipes on a single breath. You will not get light headed anymore.
No problem. Can I ask you to visit our site and send us an email from there? I can better answer your questions. Also watch my other videos, I think you will enjoy them.
@17Colors With a good panflute you can start playing fairly quickly. It does take practice to get good at it. At first you are working mostly on tone and then learning to play expressively. To me it has alway been FUN.. Come visit our site and send me an email from there. We'll get you started. Pan ON!
i have a pan flute with two rows too. the row in front is lower than the back one, and all the notes are different but i cant reach the back row easily, and low notes are hard to play.
@Korcie13 They are a completely different kind of panflute from what I am playing. I think you would have a much easier time with ours. The instrument I am playing in my video is same instrument we send to our customers.. they all have that beautiful rich sound.
I got a pan flute with 2 rows. Are they supposed to be even on the top? Because mine is uneven but Im not sure whether I should move the pipes to make them even out.
@imlatinoguy the instrument you have is completely different than the one I am playing. You have the Siku, which is meant for playing the music of the Andes.. a special instrument that came from that area and fits the music from where it came. You can learn more on my websites and write me from there.
Please write to me from our shop's website and we talk directly. Plus I think a lot of your questions will be answered and there is tons to see and listen to.

bloodpetals4me 1 year ago
@bloodpetals4me HI, my website is panflute (dot) net (no spaces and put a period instead of dot)
The scale I am using for this panflute is a 5 note scale (pentatonic) it is very ancient and is used in music all around the world. It is also used in jazz and blues and is great for improvising. Just close your eyes and play. Everything sounds good.

I have a homemade pan flute made out of bamboo, I love it but it doesn't make as good a sound as this...
Is it just me? Does it require more skills?
My pan flute has 7 pipes and the top isn't so straight, should I polish it?
iNoamfer 1 year ago
@iNoamfer A homemade 7 pipe flute can only take you so far. If you really want to do more and have a better sound, then come visit our site. Send me an email from there and we can talk about what you would like to do :)

It's a good question, yes all sharps and flats are playable. Visit my site and send me an email and I'll send you a link on how to do it. ... Brad
bwhite 1 year ago
This may sound like a stupid question, but can you play all the sharps and flats on the panflute, or are there only certain notes you can play on certain ones? And how do you do it...

You can find our instruments at our website. Go to panflute(dot)net

you picked a nice room to demo your pan flute....very nice natural reverb reflections added to your great playing. 5 stars!
stripes5150 1 year ago
How do you achieve such a clear sound? Is that tecnique? I just can't do it.. I haven't owned a panflute long but I'm having problems.
adagio311288 1 year ago
@adagio311288 Its important to have a good instrument. On a bad instrument I would not have that sound you are hearing. Yes it takes practice.. no instrument will play itself.. but with a good instrument you see progress as you spend time learning. Check out my other videos and also visit my website. You can write me from there.

I want to buy a pan flute, is a 9 pipe panflute good to start with
Eggozoid 2 years ago
@Eggozoid
That would be kind of small to play much. You don't want to buy a toy and just be frustrated. We have some smaller instruments, but they are really good. You might want to visit our site and listen to them. I have a lot of audio and video on every page.

How I make clear voice on Pan flute?
I really want to know!
MizuWeed 2 years ago
@MizuWeed You need to have a good instrument to play on. Then practice holding long tones on the highest notes you have. It is the focus of your airstream. When you have a good focus you can play softly and sweetly. Write to me at our website.

hey just wondering if you like the 10 pipe pan flute or the 7 pipe better, i'm about to start so it would be good to have an oppinion, reply please!
thanks, Sam Lewis.
samlewis450 2 years ago
@samlewis450
Our 10-pipe pentatonic (FunPipes) gives you a nice range to play different pieces. 7 pipes is going to feel limiting in a very short time. Come visit our site and see..
Aloha .. Brad White .. panflute (dot) net
bwhite 2 years ago
@midlands72 Yes at the beginning. Mostly because you are wasting most of your air and so you need to breath for each pipe. Be sure to use your tongue for each note as you start. Tu Tu Tu, that will give them a good start. As your air becomes more focused you will be able to play many pipes on a single breath. You will not get light headed anymore.

Korcie13 2 years ago
@Korcie13 They are a completely different kind of panflute from what I am playing. I think you would have a much easier time with ours. The instrument I am playing in my video is same instrument we send to our customers.. they all have that beautiful rich sound.

I got a pan flute with 2 rows. Are they supposed to be even on the top? Because mine is uneven but Im not sure whether I should move the pipes to make them even out.
imlatinoguy 2 years ago
@imlatinoguy the instrument you have is completely different than the one I am playing. You have the Siku, which is meant for playing the music of the Andes.. a special instrument that came from that area and fits the music from where it came. You can learn more on my websites and write me from there.
