I remember playing this back in the early nineties on the Atari Lynx. I just played this game recently using the handy lynx emulator and I was able to make it to the 16th round. The 17th round is the farthest round I've been to though.
I remember when i had an atari lynx i wanted so bad to be able to play it on tv because the graphics were so freaking grainy. They should have increased the resolution and also made it where users could hook lynx up to tv. I know atari could have given it a much better resolution. Atari lynx had great potential if it would have had japanese support from companies like capcom or konami. But thatnks to nintendo's dictatorship over third party companies alot of consoles were killed off.
This looks very faithful to the Arcade version considering that its only 16 colours! Even the mid-level cut-scenes where he poses next to the statues look great! Did the Arcade version even use 256colours on screen?
Man when I took trips with the family as a kid, I played this game so much! I remember being on the bed in the hotel finally beating this game. Was pretty excited!
Don't forget, you're looking at it blown up on a computer monitor using an emulator. When you're looking at it on a smaller screen, it looks a lot less blocky. A PSP has the same resolution as a VHS videotape but because the screen is so small, you don't notice the resolution as much. PSP games look almost as good as some PS2 games. NES resolution is 256x240, Lynx is 160x102 but Lynx has a lot more colors and can display more colors per line than NES so it balances out.
I knew the Atari Lynx was ahead of its time but I didn't know it was by this much. Too bad Atari couldn't get the price and size right the first time.
A realy enjoyable game, but this is not a 16bit game that game easily plays on a gb system without the colours ofcourse.Because atari actualy claims that that hand held was running on 16 bit pallete.
I remember when this came out--people were like...WTF this isn't Rygar! I was the only person I knew who had played the coin-op and had to sadly inform them that indeed it was the NES version that was a total bastardization of Rygar....not the Lynx one which was really close to the arcade!
@cybersalad ya, i spent many of quarters on the arcade version, then my son got rygar for the NES and i was all excited untill he pluged it in, then i was like wtf !! thats not rygar, but it was still kinda cool.
That's because the Lynx is actually a 16 bit system. It was more powerful than an NES. There wouldn't be a more powerful handheld with better graphics until the Gameboy Advance came out. There weren't even any 16 bit consoles out at the time the Lynx was released, that's how far ahead of it's time it was.
what do you mean? =S I can't see why. i mean. the SNES had a very slow processor, the only thing that made it good was it's graphic capabilities, the Genesis had a faster processor, but the graphics capabilities were lower. I can't see how a handled was either better with graphics or processing...
The Lynx was something for its time. Way the hell ahead of it.
Gameboy was still in black and white and severely limitted, while the Lynx was doing multiple levels of parallax scrolling and sprite and background scaling effortlessly. Had good audio sampling too, when games actually used it.
Unfortunately, the Lynx's incredible power turned out to be it's biggest weakness. You couldn't get much more than 5 hours of battery life on the thing; It was just too powerful for it's own good.
I never complained about the battery life because I expected it to drain batteries. The Lynx was light years ahead of the GameBoy. I just bought a $19.99 A/C adapter and never used batteries again. There was also a rechargeable battery pack and a car adapter available for it.
I wouldn't say it took too much power, it's just that the system could work with the raw power, sprite manipulation and low res to do some great things.
It took too much power to be considered an elegant bunch of audiovisual solutions, but what the portable's horsepower could muster up was impressive, and I think developers could've gone far with it.
Unless you mean battery power. Then yeah, it sure did take too much power :)
I loved the Gameboy for that reason. It was truly "portable."
yeah i did mean Battery =P it's amazing how kids would prefer worse graphics but better battery life. but my guess it wasn't that, it was the parents that didn't want to "waste" so much money on a "toy" for their kids. because that's how parents saw video game consoles and games xD today it's much different, but back then parents didn't have video game systems =P unless they would like video games which would be very rare.
when i was young i used to play this game in the arcade "charlie m's" in bedford and always compleated it in just under an hour i was the don at the game lmao.;-)

Of all games that has been released since 1990, nothing comes close to Rygar on Lynx when it comes to quality gaming. Nothing!

Wow, the graphics are bad. I thought Lynx was on par with like NES and Master System. This is more like Colecovision or Commodore 64.

I like both version of Rygar (arcade and NES). They're really different games, but the original Rygar has that awesome 80's arcade game feel.

Yeah, good memory there.
It was pretty noticeable, the low resolution, and the screen was a bit larger too, making things even more pixelly.
Still, I loved that thing.

how is this 16 bit? it looks 8 bit. but i don't really understand bits anyway. what do they mean?

I agree. The music here sounds more like an NES game. I think it has closest resemblance to a Sinclair Spectrum.
It does sound better than the Game Gear, though.
ChryslerCruiser 3 years ago
the lynx had 16-bit graphics, but the main processor was 8 bit.

Sitting through this video was tough, but I was rewarded at 5:36. Some of the SFX were cool, but the music sucks ass compared to the NES version.
