  • If your worrid about getting a bad back then kneel down and keep your back straight to put the sink cut in. You can still look up if your sink is down low. Plus whoever owns the land is gunna be pissed when he has 200 4 foot stumps to deal with! and man what a waste of timber!

  • All flora and fauna are now mixing and will become evenly distributed on all the continents due to our ever-increasing need to travel and our ability to travel quickly and cheaply. This is impossible to stop.

  • I love Eucs. I think it is a shame to cut down such a nice tree. I have been growing and planting Eucs. all over our island for years.

  • good vid thanks

  • Save the Redwoods, Julia Butterfly was a true women that only dose it once never twice is her rule but passes it on to new people she wont do it again. its your turn. Save the Eucalyptus trees from being removed by HWY 101 cal trans. save the redwoods at Richerdson Grove in southern Humboldt. Save the Scotia & Rio dell Eel River Bluffs. and many other places in humboldt county. Join mindpetals . org humboldt ORG Nanning creek & Mckay Track in humboldt

  • Looked ok but everyone goes for that conventional face cut and I don't see why. You can drop it cleaner with an open face or a humbolt with less chance of bounce and roll. Also you won't need the wedges or at least not so many of them. Of course if this is commerical logging and you're trying to get all the wood then a low conventional saves the most wood but you cut this so high I doubt that's the case.

Also I'd have cut that other tree that it hit on the way down first for a clean fall.

  • Stupit mongo , why cut it down?

  • seem a bit nervous when cutting the tree. It is ok to cut a bigger pie in the tree. usually I like to cut about 1/3 into a tree first. also I could not see that you last cut was on the front of the tree or the back. once you start cutting the back never move to the front of the tree it is far too easy to stick the saw. also if you are driving the wedges all the way in then you need bigger wedges. I always like to have a little stick out just in case my saw ever get stuck I can rescue it

  • What stihl model was that chainsaw? Please respond.

  • i think it is a 660 but it might be a 460

  • A 640 with a 75cm blade

  • Why in sam hill are people destroying trees just because they aren't native to here? Are they threatening other trees? You all aren't out to cut down ALL of the eucalyptus trees, are you? I think the variety is nice, and I absolutely adore the way they smell, at least one or two of them. Anyway, how is our habitat sensitive to non native trees? I kinda like having a piece of Australia up here with us.

  • Because they don't really tolerate undergrowth, they got rid of various insects in California, they suck up tons of water, they can become invasive, and it is not because it's a tree you can stick it anywhere, it's still "the right tree and the right spot"...

  • Projects like this play an important part of our everyday lives. it says "CCC" on his hardhat... That stands for California Conservation Corps. This project was most likely prescribed by the fire marshal to reduce wildfire fuel near a suburban area. The brush, undergrowth, and non native trees must be removed to preserve and protect homes and people. In contrast, the CCC also plants native trees in burn areas to help protect against erosion, mudslides and floods.

  • buy an axe not a hammer put bigger scarf in tree it will fall over lots easier about one third of the tree keep learning you will get there

  • Good job! Next time keep a felling bar with you - great combination when the wedges have gone as far as they can go. Only one problem - Why'd you do it looking like a bee keeper?!

  • hahahahaha

  • rated 5 stars nice work what model saw?

  • not sure who taught you how to fall but they should be slapped, by the way nice coveralls

  • hey cowboy,,, they are tyvek suits, there is lots of poison oak in the area. so what do you see wrong in this operation to slap my trainer?

  • Finally someone who knows what he is doing. Good job. I would have sawed it closer to the ground, so you use a big mallot or hookwegdge to ram those wedges in. But hey, that's how i've learned it. :)

  • that is a stupid way to cut a tree. in Portugal we cut all the trees close th the ground!!!

  • You can always cut down the rest of the bottom trunk later; you should first cut at the height that's comfortable to you when you make the fall.

  • you felled it safely and that's the important thing. Forrester's hate stumps coz your loosing timber.Arborists say fell it where you feel comfortable then cut the stump of last - it looks tidier

  • If thats a sensitive area habitat, why so much destruction when felling the tree? could the fell not be planed out a bit better to reduce damage to other trees in the area?. p.s nice use of felling wedges thoe ;)

  • good job! high time ignorant ppl took notice that the trees dont belong to that region of the planet!! keep up the good work!

  • mackapalmy, thanks for the input and feedback, I am trying to be a good sawyer and your pointers sure help out.

  • sawyers saw lumber... you're a feller, cutter, or bushler. lol. but yeah rigging crews and skidderoperators hate high stumpers like that, but what the hell, i high stump when im cutting hazard trees in someone's yard too. who the hell cares? it was a good fall

  • Finally somebody who knows what they are doing..Only thing i picked up on was not having a hand in front of the chain brake incase of kick back..And you definately need a felling axe or a log splitter hammer with a long handle to be able to be more effective and less effort..Good fell tho

  • overall I agree with all the comments on needing wedges, I prefer a high lift wedge. Does the guy in the video have a bad back?! Or are enormous stumps not an issue in Australia?!! I'm from UK and we fell at ground level, he's obviously not being paid by the cubic metre!! Oh and he needs a bigger hammer! If you cut low to the ground have high lift wedges and a long handled maul, your life becomes alot easier felling big trees.

  • by cutting waist high you prevent having a bad back and you are able to look up and watch for falling debris ( widow makers )and walk away quickly from the base of the tree.I am not harvesting wood and the stump is left high because later it will be resurfaced and sprayed with a herbicide to kill the root system. you are right about the hammer, I need to use a proper felling ax, Oh and this is San Diego California, there is a few eucalyptus here!

  • I see, are the eucalyptus a problem then, being a foreign invader? We have this with a few species. The stumps are a big issue for us here, because the country is so small no woodland is more than 1000 years old, and they are all managed, some better than others. If we left big stumps everwhere you,d never get any tractors around the place!! Good to be doing good in the wild, keep it up..

  • we are not a logging crew, we are removing non-navive trees from a sensitive area habitat, mostly eucalyptus

  • this is a 660 model chainsaw

  • Are you guys a logging crew or what?WT

  • wut tyoe of stihl

  • Good to finally see something by a professional on here. All Safety gear in use. Accurate cuts, checking on them as you go, sighting it up. Saw down and off. Wedges for controlled fell. Escape route. Only points off are for going back to cut a bit more. If you leave the right amount of hingewood the wedges will drive it over. Have more & bigger wedges on hand and use the back of an axe to pound em in instead of that little hammer. All up, good effort.

  • It looked good to me, I fell trees every day and swear by my wedges. Especially if I'm clearing a building lot for a house or something, I want to drop the trees towards the center of the clearing to avoid damage to surrounding trees. It's way faster to use wedges than set up the winch. Good job!!

  • Everyone has their own technique for felling a tree. Nice job overall!!

  • I've been doing tree work my whole life and I rarely use wedges, how much of a lean was there on that tree?

  • there was no lean on this particular tree, hence the wedge to create lift and push tree over. when you become an experienced sawyer and you know about sitback, compression, tension, binds and the potential for your saw to get pinched you can do without wedges, but if you ask me, I always carry wedges

  • What's the wedges for? if you want to determine the direction of fall, your best bet is to leave more holding timber on the side you want it to pull too. Also don't always use wedges, because if a tree starts to jam the bar, it's basically telling you it wants to fall to the opposite direction, if you cut too much holding timber it could fall any direction, resulting in fast running!

  • wedges prevent sitback, keep the bar from being pinched and when driven they provide lift to push the tree over the desired direction of fall regardless of direction of lean, a wedge is a sawyers best friend. thanks for comment.

  • Experience is a sawyers best friend.
