Omg! My teacher played this in my English class today! I didn't know it was from the "here comes the rain again" guys! Whoa! It is so stinking catchy, I can't get it out of my head!!! I hate 1984.
To illustrate the effect of Oceania's newspeak Orwell used the Declaration of Independence and said that in newspeak the entire wording would be changed and thus altering the entire meaning of the document, something to think about.
The Eurythmics were asked to record a soundtrack for the movie 1984 and when it was completed they were told it was not wanted. They must have been mad, this is such a classic, atmospheric album. SO the songs are not in the film
I was crazy lucky and found this album on LP 12 years ago in a used record store that is now long closed . . . it was $2. I treat it like its made of gold . . . . I remember picking it up and almost rushing out of the store without paying for it I was so excited.
Was interesting that this album was such a mix of their old electronic and sampling stuff, but hinted at the rock and roll of the next two albums especially Revenge. But it was also a great take on Orwell's story.
Excellent talent and creativity in this song - if you listen to it. Meaning of Doubleplusgood:
Doubleplusgood is a concept from Newspeak which is a fictional language in George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four. In Newspeak, intensifiers are added, so "great" becomes "plusgood", and "excellent" and "splendid" likewise becomes "doubleplusgood".
I I am pleased to announce, that the War on Terror is now within foreseeable distance of its end... Our Forces for Freedom & Democracy, have wasted 1000000 Iraqi Civilians, but our calculations predict their numbers will return to 2003 levels, within 40 years. DoublePlusGood !
@Steveguyatrocket Great use of irony... congratulations...you are using the most effective weapon to topple dictators and false prophets... never lose this ability.
One of my ultimate favs and one of the songs that have been on each format I owned. I had the cassette, xfered it CD with my first burner and it was one of the first group of mp3s on my first iRiver player.
I SIMPLY LOVE THIS TRACK!!! I USED TO DANCE IT IN MY ROOM IN A TOTALLY CRAZINESS

@ThePaulbridgeman It must have hurt them so bad. It's a fabulous album, perhaps my favourite. As you say atmospheric.

Forgotten how much I like this song. Bit repetative but that suits the subject I guess.

1984 is a real "secret tip".
On of the best albums of the 80s, in one line with "Low" from David Bowie.
