I really want an STG-44, but I'm pretty sure shooting much 7.92x33 would put me in the poor house. I guess this is where they got the idea for a .22 version--I would certainly like to have one, but I'm not sure I'd buy one. Someone needs to make a real one in collaboration with an ammo company to make the 7.92x33, though I'm sure it still wouldn't be too cheap. Nonetheless, I think collectors would rather have a real gun that's expensive to shoot than a replica they can plink with.
@wcropp1 In an ideal world, though, we would have the .22 as a trainer, and a real one--now go make the real one GSG. And a real MP-5 clone too, while you're at it.
If they - GSG - produced this in 7.62 x 39, used a chrome lined barrel, and adapted it to use standard AK magazines, they would not be able to make them quick enough.... Who wouldn't want that set up?
GSG uses pot metal for receivers and components... cheaper to produce and will work with .22s only. Bigger calibers require better engineering, better(more expensive) metals, and they need to go through atf's loops and ladders for import regulations.
I own an original MP-44, and this .22 version also has appeal for me. Look at all the nonthinking posters here begging for a 7.62x39mm or 5.56mm version who don't realize that the Russian round is too long to fit in an MP-44 magazine. The ignorance is amazing. You COULD make a 9mm version if the barrel were made ridiculously larger in diameter too. The idea here folks, is to make a .22 plinker toy that appeals to people who like historical gun but cannot afford the originals. I'D BUY ONE!
Not really. Why use an MP-44 mags at all? They're far from cheap or widely available, The aftermarket repro's are over $100/each and let's not get started on the original ones! If the manufacturer developed a totally new mag scaled appropriately for 7.62x39, it would be cheaper and easier to get than trying to use MP-44 mags! Heck, they could modify the receiver to accept AK mags, either way you'd get to use cheaper, more available ammo that's ballistically superior too!
@hobofactory If you scale the mags up to accept the length of a 7.62x39mm cartridge, then the appearance of the gun will be altered to the degree that it will not be suitable for reenactment purposes. Sure, you can inexpensively plink with a 90% clone of the MP-44, but if it doesn't really LOOK like an MP-44 to the discerning eye, I'd rather just use my AK-47 to shoot that same ammo. And yeah, reenactors DO care that it appears 100% like the original gun.
There's really only a few mm difference in OAL between 7.92x33 and 7.62x39, one's eye would have to be discerning indeed to tell the difference. In any case, reenactors are a much smaller market than people who want to plink inexpensively, this is probably why someone did a .22lr replica, which by the way, can also quite readily be discerned from the real deal, and that didn't stop them from making it.
The originals MP44's was pretty heavy and was turned down for military infantry use by Hitler Thus creating your Favored AK platform ! would be nice to see different caliber tho
always wanted this gun but in the original one this is cool but not same thing. love guns from that time frame they were made for real men not ones who bitch over every detail of the gun. or everything else in life they just dealt with it.
I thought that you could make the 7.92x33 from the 8mm Mauser using a set of form and trim dies. Not easy as you'd have to cut out excess brass in the formed cases mouth but doable.
sell in 2x4 construction crate - sell at exhorbanant price! lol

At least year's SHOT show, ATI was also promising a .22lr version of the MP-40, any sign of that this time around?

Does the current GSG-5 mags work in this rifle? The shooter doesn't seem to like it.

@Acefearkiller Some Europeain Countries only allow Semi Auto Rifles in .22
GSG is a Europe based company so maybe they were trying to make a product they can sell to the US Market and ones in Europe
