What you said could have happen in the 1940s but would be second to impossible today. People really dont know how huge government isand how much we rely on it. For example for all there talk about shrinking and cutting government 70% of Tea Party dont want there entitlement cuts even to bring down the deficit!

And it take more then a person or even a group of people to change this powerful system. Presidents and new members of congress could not. Even if you cut our military by 95% and several programs it would be a drop in the bucket. The real problem is entitlements that make up 75% of government growth. Cutting other programs wont matter.

I think that both decreasing government power and increasing democratic involvement will have the effect of decentralizing power in America and will therefore bring the government back into check.
