The pilot was trying to land on one rear wheel (didn't work). Did anyone notice the one lucky guy who did just about walked off the copter precisely when the wheel touched? amazing.
A "stinger", or downward pointed rod coming off the back of the tailboom is designed to absord shock in the event of a hard landing. Also, the Eurcopter fenestron enclosed fan blade would have lessened the LTE (loss of tailrotor effectiveness) problem. Also, the McDonnell Douglas NOTAR system eliminates the tail rotor and substitutes a combination of a fan blade and anti-torque from main rotorblade downwash over the tailboom. And two counter-rotating main rotor blades work as well.
That sucks. When is the military going to improve these fucking monsters? You see they all pulled their legs in during the spin; but that poor guy who jumped or fell out, hanging onto the wheel .... damn, I hope he made it.
Simpson, how exactly should they be improved? If you make it perfectly safe, you also make it perfectly useless for combat. All accidents can't be avoided, and unreliable crafts are abandoned for more efficient, safer designs. Plus, when that tail rotor goes, its *bleep* hitting the fan no matter what the pilot does. There's a reason they don't give helo-crews parachutes.
So you are saying its either safe and ineffective or dangerous and effective? I dont accept no alternatives viewpoints. And "all accidents cant be avoided" ... no shit. I grew up in the Air Force, I know about accidents and wars, and "my daddy out-ranks your daddy" but thanks for the lecture anyway. I had no idea that ALL accidents CANNOT be avoided! I thought they could. You just ruined my day and I will be worried about having an accident.
Gee, I ask a valid question, so you send your "daddy" after mine? Intelligent debate there. Maybe I should have looked into my psychic ball to know about your life story.
I didn't ask if you were an Air Force kid. I made a point on the effectiveness of helo's in our military. Seeing as how its the life I'm living right now (and it isn't my "daddy" thats involved), I just might know something about it.
It wasn't really a valid question, and you cannot dictate how others answer. I will answer you in the way I choose, and in this case I chose sarcasm to respond to your condescending manner.
I know a guy who was talking to a guy who knows a guy that is friends with a guy who drink in the same pub in Glasgow and he said that it was the wee guy jump out that done it!
he came in for the landing to fast and at to much of a angel and the guy was crused most likely the blades where gone and cuting the engine at that point wont do any good it takes time for it to slow down
Please refrain from being everyone's nanny and grow a thicker skin. Besides, this was in the news at the time. It was a French helo on a GIGN (french counter-terror unit) trainng mission...and everyone survived.
my brother in law flies a Puma helicopter the same as this one and I am an ex pilot. The likely cause of this crash would be due to a catastrophic failure of the tail rotor. This is the small rotor blade at the back of the helicopter which stabilises flight. A helicopter cannot fly without it. It looks like the pilots did the best they could here... it was pretty terrifying having to watch this one!

thats loss of tail rotor not due to a shit pilot think before you type something
azzashute 5 years ago 5
@azzashute The tail rotor was still spinning. It's not loss of tail rotor.

A guy who jumped from the helicopter:
1. Survived the crash
2. Was pinned down by the falling heli or
3. Got chopped down by a rotor (ouch!)

did that guy who jumped out make it? looked like he got away before the tail came around again and cut him in half. but not totally sure

Looked to me like the pilot tried to land it like an airplane. I land helicopters by stopping in mid air and then slowly lowering my altitude.

In the military the pilots land like this as it is faster.

You're right it's not as safe; but then they are usually trained to very high standards which kind of makes up for it

The pilot landed too abruptly and that damaged the tail rotor, sending it into a flat spin.
