there are many versions of this song but this is the only one in which natalie merchant hums her voice is the most beatiful noise i've ever heard i think of her as gorky thoughtof tolstoy she is like God
great lyrics im a risk taker and i relate to this, but im only dangerous to my self, im so tired but i have habbits to feed please dont do hard drugs pepole its just a lie for all the times you felt great theres more days filled with pain it just wont balance out and beleive me we are all able to slip its easy just one time can be all you need and the all the drugs in the world wont fix your pain only desract you if you need to just smoke herb it wont do you wrong ,peace and hapiness to all
I had their live MTV Unplugged album first, so when I got this album and heard the richness of this song and so many others, I was blown away. LOVE it.
Never saw them live, motorbikes got in the way,had fun but missed out.best voice ever, almost ,but maybe Harriet from the sundays and I missed them as well.saw Pixies 1st tour at Newcastle Riverside and WAHEY.
this song reminds me of my 1st love and when i hear it it recollects memories of us....even though that was over 10years ago i still have great love for her and still will
I agree one of Natalie's best, however even during her hayday you would rarely ever hear this on the radio. Which just goes to show you a lot of what we hear is fixed by contracts, agreements, producer rights, radio station preferences, ect.. nice to be able to choose what you want to listen to with this format.
Thanks for posting. I agree w/many of the commenters in that I had the unplugged version on cassette and found it more meaningful. 10,000 Maniacs - always great!!
As do I. I'd say that the unplugged album did so for a majority of the songs, the prime examples being this and "Stockton Gala Days". Thanks a million for posting this.
I thought perhaps she was referring to the evangelist scandals back in the 90's - how they earned the trust of many yet led secret, often corrupt lifes ('choir boys and angels stole your lips and your halo')then fled like cowards with the money they stole.
This tune came out when I was in my last year of college. Great time of my life. This song made me cry then and still does now. The tears now are of an older person, so while not so obvious they are nonetheless very real.
love this song, not because it's cheery, but because its ;yrics make you think about their meaning, which are not literal. to me it's about people who do what they want, heedless of the damage it causes others.
my interpretation of the song: she is talking about an ex-lover, who turns out to be someone who is afraid of commitment, he is an escape artist, because he truly believes he is free to do whatever he wants, notwithstanding what she feels.
wish i would have known your mom,I absolutely loved maniacs unplugged.would get home from work shower play with the kids then hold them as they fell asleep watching maniacs unplugged
My Mom was the same way, all throughout my childhood this album followed me everywhere. Hearing these songs now really brings me back. I have some fantastic memories attached with these songs.

MTV unplugged was the send-off as Nat had decided to leave on her own,
but wanted everyone to be set financially.
Unplugged assured that.
Drove cross country on this and heard of the split,
in Lake Tahoe.
"You act as if you have more lives"
out the windows and America

The mark of a great song is that it touches the masses. YOU tell us YOUR interpretation!! We have to share.
For me it is the voice of the girl I had before I tried too hard to be myself. Loved me and left me. Smartest girls I've ever known.
