  • its a pity no one on utube uploaded the acoustic version which is by far better than all those drum beating stupid like...

    sorry folks

  • Guess I should join the chorus I was in my last year of college too.

Those were the days! First Democratic president in 12 years, we believed in a place called hope.

  • there are many versions of this song but this is the only one in which natalie merchant hums her voice is the most beatiful noise i've ever heard i think of her as gorky thoughtof tolstoy she is like God

  • My last year of college too. Great post, labear.

  • I'm a man and I too get a chocking feeling when I listen to this song everytime!

  • I thought I saw her in her car one day in a town not too far from here.

    ...Heard she lives nearby(?)

  • My favorite song!!!

  • one of my favorite songs from 10000 maniacs..thanks for uptoading!

  • Wonderful song, I love this album. Thank you for posting.

  • I remember how it was before

  • my love of danger grows deeper

  • I so love this song , thank you...

  • MTV unplugged was the send-off as Nat had decided to leave on her own,

but wanted everyone to be set financially.

    Unplugged assured that.

Drove cross country on this and heard of the split,

    in Lake Tahoe.

"You act as if you have more lives"

    out the windows and America

    thru the windshield..

  • I had their live MTV Unplugged album first, so when I got this album and heard the richness of this song and so many others, I was blown away. LOVE it.

  • Never saw them live, motorbikes got in the way,had fun but missed out.best voice ever, almost ,but maybe Harriet from the sundays and I missed them as well.saw Pixies 1st tour at Newcastle Riverside and WAHEY.

  • Lovely girl!!! I miss them so much!

  • This is one of my favorite songs from them.

    Brilliant lyrics and beautiful voice.

One of the best albums from them.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Terri:)

  • this song reminds me of my 1st love and when i hear it it recollects memories of us....even though that was over 10years ago i still have great love for her and still will

  • "I'm tired, tired of knowing

    where it is your going..."

Love this song. It reminded me of someone close at that time.

I look back now, and the lyrics are just as fitting for me then

  • I agree one of Natalie's best, however even during her hayday you would rarely ever hear this on the radio. Which just goes to show you a lot of what we hear is fixed by contracts, agreements, producer rights, radio station preferences, ect.. nice to be able to choose what you want to listen to with this format.

  • To me the best song of the album was Gold Rush Brides... Too bad it isn't posted, but thanks for this anyway!

  • Thanks for posting. I agree w/many of the commenters in that I had the unplugged version on cassette and found it more meaningful. 10,000 Maniacs - always great!!

  • As do I. I'd say that the unplugged album did so for a majority of the songs, the prime examples being this and "Stockton Gala Days". Thanks a million for posting this.

    Much love

    ~Linn

  • An all time classic.

  • i love this song!

  • the unplugged version is amazing!

  • Where in the world does Natalie Merchant get that sweet angelic voice of hers shes one of my favorite singers.

  • I thought perhaps she was referring to the evangelist scandals back in the 90's - how they earned the trust of many yet led secret, often corrupt lifes ('choir boys and angels stole your lips and your halo')then fled like cowards with the money they stole.

  • Thanks AJMusicGirl, this is poetry, pain and intensity. Love it

  • This tune came out when I was in my last year of college. Great time of my life. This song made me cry then and still does now. The tears now are of an older person, so while not so obvious they are nonetheless very real.

  • @labear79

    We share this...

  • always makes me cry

  • AMAZING SONG!!! I LOVE NATALIE!!!!

  • God, I love this song. I agree, the unplugged version is also amazing, in a slower and more melancholy way.

  • Rest in Peace, Cathy. I never got over you.

  • The audio is a supreme masterpiece. The still suggests the renaissance in italy, and magical realism, in colombia.

  • i prefer the version from unplugged i think.its a little slower more meaningful

  • love this song, not because it's cheery, but because its ;yrics make you think about their meaning, which are not literal. to me it's about people who do what they want, heedless of the damage it causes others.

  • this is for sgt william brown

  • Amen brother!

  • Love this song, especially the "unplugged" version.

  • I do prefer the unplugged version too.

  • my interpretation of the song: she is talking about an ex-lover, who turns out to be someone who is afraid of commitment, he is an escape artist, because he truly believes he is free to do whatever he wants, notwithstanding what she feels.

  • could someone please give me their interpretation of this song....she is so intelligent and beyond my comprehensions sometimes

  • The mark of a great song is that it touches the masses. YOU tell us YOUR interpretation!! We have to share.

For me it is the voice of the girl I had before I tried too hard to be myself. Loved me and left me. Smartest girls I've ever known.

  • she's speaking metaphoricaly, using heavenly references to describe his faults

  • I got braveness out of this song!

Somewhat of release & freedom. Love it.

  • Not bad. I remember when I was a young kid my Mom would play this CD nonstop all day everyday. Brings back lots of memories

  • wish i would have known your mom,I absolutely loved maniacs unplugged.would get home from work shower play with the kids then hold them as they fell asleep watching maniacs unplugged

  • My Mom was the same way, all throughout my childhood this album followed me everywhere. Hearing these songs now really brings me back. I have some fantastic memories attached with these songs.

  • This has beauty beyond comprehension.

  • one of the best songs in the world!

  • good one
