Nice seeing that there are still some good spots, they've poached most of everything here, asian triads trade ephedrine with the poor locals for abalone, it has cause an epidemic meth crisis.
No, I'm not a commercial abalone diver. There is no commercial abalone fishery in California. What I mean is there is an unnatural overabundance of abalone because of the lack of sea otter predation.
I was giving you a hard time because the commercial Ab industry is trying to reopen sections of the coast to commercial Ab diving again.
One of their last proposals was to open the Farallones to begin with and make Half Moon Bay a landing for the industry which would put them in striking distance of the entire North Coast.
One of their talking points is that abalone on the North Coast are "over abundant" anyway.
No, you can use scuba gear in the ocean (abalone are everywhere in NorCal) but you cannot take any abalone with scuba gear, or even have the gear on your boat when taking abalone.
We showed this to the CA Fish & Game Commission back in December of 2008, to counter false claims by the Karen Garrison of the NRDC and Samantha Murray of the The Ocean Conservancy that this area is "80% depleted."
great vid..im from new zealand and we have areas like this that are suppose to be depleted... but we arent going to tell others where they are...good stuff

@chaseborchers
This is in about 20 feet of water.
NoyoConfidential 1 year ago

@Eileen8490
We were just taking pictures with scuba gear for educational purposes. When taking abalone in NorCal, scuba gear is prohibited. Freedive only.
No abalone were harmed in the production of this video!

Define "overpopulation" please. Sounds like something a commercial Ab diver would say.
Chistant 2 years ago
If sea otters where present in the area there would be a lot fewer abalone & all shellfish...
NoyoConfidential 2 years ago
Please define "overpopulation" 'over' implies there are too many abalone. Are you a commercial Ab diver?

That's why I was suspicious.

Amazing footage. I've always wanted to go abalone diving.

anyway, awesome video, thanks!

i thought it was illegal to use scuba gear in abalone area, even if you didn't take any?
geolotus12 2 years ago
@geolotus12 , some diver does not care
for abalone. If I happened to be diving to spearfish, then my concentration is to catch my fish and I'd regard abalone as a piece of rock..!!!

@geolotus12 How on earth do you know if you are going to see any Abalone when you are diving in Scuba gear?
