I remember a long time ago, this beautiful song called Lilli Marlene... Stomping Tom did the most brilliant cover of it.. would appreciate anyone who could post it, since that album is out of print..
In a way i'm sad to report the pembroke pub Tom referenced burnt down in1978, but some of us remember his classic hitchhiking tale as he traveled canada and wrote these songs, i tip my hat to a classic guy and great Canadian.
I think it was a great ballad. Big Joe Mufferaw is a Canadian tall tale of an Canadian folklores. Like Paul Bunyan of America. Big Joe the giant woodsman who now lived as a lumberjack chopping down trees for Canadian timber yards of the Ottawa Valley. I hope there a book are going to be about Big Joe Mufferaw and Canadian folklores.
@PDpirates182 I love Wawa! Used to go visit my cousins in the summer when I was a kid! Actually, going there for a lady's hockey tournament this weekend! The Wawa motor might kick us out! haha!
@ralphyization i loved it, i lived theyre my first 5 years, then my dad passed away and i moved to southern ontario. but i still remember it, and i miss it so much,
@PDpirates182 My lady's team just went to a hockey tournament up there!! Fun fun fun!! The whole town got into it! There were 10 teams up there, 2 from Wawa, but none the less, what a HOOT!! We won 2nd place! Whoo- hoo! More fun than a barrel of monkeys!
One man who has stood the test of time in the music world. 75 years young and hasn't missed a step(or should I say stomp) in 50+ years of dedicating his life to his fans. I've met him on several occassions over the span of 30 years and there's not an 'uppity' bone in his body. Gordon Lightfoot and Tom connors are truly two great Canadians.
@inomyguns12345678910 couldnt ask for better. the concert went 3 hours long. he was taking requests, and the frickin auditorium ppl made him get off stage.
Unlike his American counterpart "Paul Bunyon", Big Joe Mufferaw was based on a real person, a French-Canadian lumberjack named Joseph Montferrand; who was strong as an ox and fiercely proud of his French heritage, once, Big Joe was in a Montreal bar, where a British army major was freely insulting French Canadians. After Big Joe laid a beating on the major, he yelled out, "Any more insults for the Canadians?"
@herculesmcguire Being that Canada doesn't have Barack Obama or water that makes you bleed to death, I have to agree that it's the best place in North America.
I live in Pittsburgh, Pa and play Stompin Tom at EVERY Penguins tailgates before the home games... Just about everyone asks who that is...and I tell them it is the Johnny Cash of Canada. Stompin Tom RULES!!!!!!
This guy's amazing... I'm going to teach my Grade 3 students Bud the Spud ... not just because it's about potatoes and PEI (Social Studies and Science combined!!) but because it's catchy and they'll love it. True folksingers sing songs for everyone and that's what Tom does.
Big Joe!! Had the honour of seeing Tom play this in Carleton Place in 1993. And the story that he tells about the "Mississippi dripping off of Big Joe's face" is still talked today.
If you love Canada ,how can you not love Stomping Tom Connors, one of our country's most iconic performers, as Canadian as the Nor'westers and the Couriers de Bois. As surely as the sun rises , Big Joe Mufferaw would have stopped at the Recollet Fathers Mission to the Fur Traders at Recollet Falls on the beautiful French River , on his way West to Manitoba,Saskatchewan, Alberta and British columbia !! Way to go Stompin Tom, Way to go Canada . I love you both with all my heart .
Thanks for the prompt to watch my old "main man" Stompin' Tom. The poem "Sudbury Saturday Night" is one of the finest pieces of art ever produced in Canada, and that includes every gal's heart-throb, Leonard Cohen! Cheers ngfxoxo from AjaxEddyfan!
I grew up listening to Tom. I can't tell you how many times he played at the Horse Shoe Tavern in T.O., he just loved that kind of atmosphere. I know several of his songs word for word.
