I have lived in New Jersey my whole life, and I'm italian.. but I don't say 'tawk' or 'gwad' not saying that people in New Jersey don't, but where I live, no one talks like that- they speak normally (well I mean no one can really speak normally- everyone has an accent) but I don't speak how other people lable New Jersey people as speaking.
Plus not only are the Jersey Shore cast not from New Jersey- most of them aren't even italian!

Sounds like a lot of youngers on this blog. Okay, let me set the record straight. North New Jersey residents carry the same general accent as people in the five boroughs of NYC, LI, ya know south ny. But I've been to parts of New Jersey where they sound like hicks, southeners, yeah. They sound like my family who live in maryland which is above virginia which is where the south technically begins(civil war). And the shitty "situation" is from philly which has its own accent.
