  • Although Wakame and Tofu miso soup is the most standard one, almost anything can go into Miso soup. Other combinations that you may be able to find the ingredients for in your place are 1) Onion+Potato, 2) Daikon radish, 2) Nappa cabbage or Cabbage 3) Carrot+Onion+Potato+Burdock+Pork+Shitake (This one is specifically called Ton-jiru), 4) Eggplants, 5) Snow peas, 6) Pumpkin+Green Onions, 7) Tomato, 8) Pork+Bean sprouts, 9) Spinach+Onion,,, and many more. Try them out and see if you like them!

  • yay for japan!!

  • Wrong way to make januin miso soup...

  • I had no idea there was so much stuff in miso soup. I thought it was just like tofu, seaweed, and green onions. Lol!

  • lol 1:58 .. and stir with a SPOON OR WHISK . dang diggy .

  • What substitute can you use for the Tofu in case you're not a fan of Tofu?! :/

  • the cook looks like a boss

  • Why don't you just buy Instant Miso Soup Powder???

  • @amyrah2000 Becuase with instant, you get NONE of the amazing probiotic benefits. Plus, its lazy.

  • Very well done. Thank you.

  • that soup make miso hungr lol

  • am I the only person who doesn't quite understand the top comment?

  • @General2528342 Wrong top comment OOPS

  • It is not intensely flavored. Lulz

  • Or you could go to Nijiya Market and get your Miso Paste or instant there.

  • 私は非常に良いに見えるの紳士と思うし、スープをそう馬鹿 !

  • sorry but this is boring... cooking with dog far more fun...

  • ITS SO EASY TO MAKE! However, finding the ingredients is a bitch! thats where they get you....

  • @VivaLaVieBoheme49 Just go to a chinese supermarket like 99 Ranch Market in rowland heights.. i know its a Japanese dish but they have all kinds of Asian stuff there... i have been eating seaweed since i was little so it is not a pain to get any, and my mom (for some reason idk) bought some miso paste and its in the fridge right now... :P

  • @RubyGold356 so...i live in BF wyoming, there is no such thing like that anywhere near where i live

  • @VivaLaVieBoheme49 what is BF wyoming

  • @RubyGold356 it means ...middle of no where...

  • I'm questioning the nutritiousness of this soup. it's looks like the base of the soup is the miso paste/powder. Kind of like using water, chicken powder and pasta, then calling it chicken noodle soup.........

  • 1:59 "with a spOON OR WHISK!" ...settle down, guy

  • me so hungry for miso soup

  • 私非常に空腹!

  • なんでどんぶりみたいな入れ物に入れてるのw

    まずそうwww

  • I got another recipe from somehwhere else, it's alot easier and tastes better. I use nori sea weed instead too, it's better because you can eat it like spinach,

  • there' s a nice alternative to scallions: Water cress.

  • Damn, I've got everything BUT the "medium-sized" bowl.

  • @mediamadman747 you can buy it on eBay

  • i hate miso soup D: or maybe that's restaurant's was bland...

  • @SilviaDemon Oh the restaurant stuff is usually way more bland than homemade. Homemade is awesome compared to it.

  • Definitely, not enough kombu. Not tasty.

  • Bonito flakes - those come from the Skipjack tuna fish don't they? Is there a substitute that can be used that'll give me less mercury, Skipjack's are one of the worst for that.

  • brings back old memories... i miss being in japan

  • how do i make this for a class of 24

  • I looks as if someone kicked dirt into hot water and added flavoring to it and called it a soup

  • why do you keep taking the stuff out and throwing it away :(

i love kelp and bonito flakes.

  • @Howcast,

I live in India. Is this Konbu thing you're talking about and the other seaweeds available here?

  • It's very common Japanese food but not many people know that it can come with different combination and taste. We can use yellow, white, or red miso paste for the soup, depending on the preference of taste and aroma. Using different composition of dashi stock will make various flavor of the soup. I tried using instant dashi also sometimes and it taste good! Oiiishiii...! -friom FB Fanpage: Quick and Easy Japanese Recipes

  • how many does this feed?

  • @Lachlan472 Its a common japanese family soup so id say 4 or 5

  • @Polaf3456 Agree! Better to make big servings for more people.

  • wrong wrong wrong......

  • @yorji Why?

  • This is why I hate watching food tutorials... I WANT TO EAT THEM SOOO BAD!!!

  • Yay we have absolutely NO ingredients here in Estonia -.-

  • @maasikas95 If you are interested I think you can buy Jap dried ingredients online :-)

  • Mmmm, I LURVE THIS SOUP! :D

  • I love miso, thanks for the vid!

  • Whenever I'm at a restaurant I order Miso soup.

It disappears in 5 minutes :o

  • CAN YOU REPLACWE THE FISH FLAKES WITH FISH SAUCE?

  • I LOVE MISO SOUP! It's like the best soup! :3

  • Can you use anything besides tofu for this?

  • any1 no where to get the ingredients for this in the UK?

  • I'll stick to my idiotic american sandwich. This makes us look like cavemen. o.o

  • @llDeaTHhIMseLFll Technically sushi is more simple than a sandwich, depending on the sandwich itself.

  • is there anything else we can use instead of bonito flakes?

    (i mean... vegetarian's ingredients)

  • @spiceyart yeah, i've looked around in asian grocery's and they often recommend "DONT BE A PUSSY" flakes.

  • @spiceyart No. This is miso soup. This what you need to make it, and how you make it. If you tried to make it with anything else it wouldn't be miso soup.

  • @spiceyart yes. don't listen to those guys telling you that it has to be fish. what makes miso soup is miso. that's why it's called miso. if you don't eat fish you can use veg stock. you can also add mushrooms. there are hundreds of ways to make miso soup. this is just one. like i said it's the miso that makes miso soup.

  • YESSSSS! Finally an understandable Miso method! The birdseye view truly helps.

  • @SnipparsPirate YES!!!!! I love the "Soviet Russia"!!! Or Soviet Japan... you know what... Soviet Japan might be even more fun than Soviet Russia. And in Soviet Russia, you do not choose rifle.... rifle choose you. XD

  • I would love to love this soup but sadly, my tonsils cannot tolerate the ''sea water'' aroma of kombu. Ive tried it many ways and it makes me sad that I dont like it because its such a beautiful soup :(

  • In Soviet Japan, men belong in the kitchen!

  • Only forewarning is to remember miso is high in sodium so enjoy but do be watchful. :)

  • OISHII :D Just cooked for my breakfast. Added Japanese sweet potato, cubed, excellent addition!

  • can u make it in a bigger bowl so i can put the leftovers in the fridge for later and not remake it everytime

  • Comment removed

  • ne, i have a question! can you use nori seaweed instead of wakame/kombu seaweed, or will itnot taste the same??

  • @Godrulesandanimals2 NOOO DONT USE NORI SEAWEED!!! YOU'LL REGRET IT!

  • @Godrulesandanimals2 if you cant get kombu kelp, you can probably get some granulated dashi stock. Its like the yellow chicken soup base but with seaweed and/or bonito flavor.

  • oishii ne???? :D

  • Miso Horny!

  • @SimpliztixX youre really childish

  • @koreangirl891 is it racist if i cant see your eyes?

  • @SimpliztixX Are you from Oceanside! because there is a Japanese restaurant called that next to Regal Theater!

  • @fortunewfortune Lol no I'm not but that's funny.. Miso Horny is what the Asian girls in American movies say when they are so horny. Me so horny!

  • @SimpliztixX haha!! thanks for the info!

  • yummy

  • this is another japanese copy.

  • I love miso soup.

  • This soup is just something that must be made by yourself or by someone that is being supervisioned by you, because there are so many details that you just can't leave it in the hands of anyone.

  • Do you really need the bonito flakes, or can you subsittued them?

  • @UKPhxWR Bonito flakes add a slightly smoky flavor to the soup. You can omit them. You can also use Ajinomoto Hon-Dashi (powdered fish soup stock) instead, but it's not as good.

  • thx so so so so so much!! i have been trying to make th for sooo long!

  • I LOVE Miso soup! Watashi Miso soup ai! Watashi Miso soup ai! Watashi Miso soup ai! Watashi Miso soup ai!

  • If you don't have the bonito flakes, can you use dried anchovies? Thanks!

  • @valnaples you can make miso soup without the fish flakes, it tastes better without them imo.

  • i dont really like miso soup.....

When i was in 2nd grade we were learning about Japan and we tasted different foods and the teacher asked my friend if she liked the miso soup or not and my friend said it tastes sooo good and the teacher asked me and im like digusting lol i probably dont like it cause it has tofu

  • tofu took me some getting use to also, but after a while i actually became addicted to it for a while!

  • what don't they have here on youtube... Awesome!

  • dried bonito stores indefinitely?

when I assumed as such, I noticed that the smoked & dried bonito which I'd stored in my cupboard changed colour & odour.

The bag distinctly reads: 'store in refrigerator'.

    FYI.

  • Indefinitely means length of time, not location.

    FYI.

  • i love this things so much.

  • cant you put noddles in it?

  • Can you make a bunch and freeze it and then toss it in the Microwave??

  • @TTdood i think so. you can do that with any other soup.

  • Wonderful! thanks!

  • Oh, you should freeze only the soup without miso, because miso is very delicate.

  • yes!

  • Cant find miso paste or wakame :S

  • I enjoy having Miso Soup frequently when I have a Japanese meal any time of the day! :)

  • @Sanosuke004 miso is so heart warming

  • @Sanosuke004 miso soup is so heart warming

  • i bought miso paste, dashi, seaweed and tofu this afternoon. we had miso soup for dinner. i never really loved japanese foods because i like chinese foods best. but this miso soup is a two-thumbs-up!!

  • 豆腐がちょっとなあ・・・

Tofu in this video doesn't look really fresh & yummy ....

  • ナンデ?

  • It makes a mistake in how to make!!!

1.Water is put in and Kombu &Dried bonitois put.

2.When it heats, and soup yellows, it takes it out.

    3The miso is melted.

    4.具を入れて完成!

  • Before I visited Japan I was really worried that I would hate the breakfast food, but now I practically gag when I eat cereal. Japan knows what's up.

Although, I've gotta say- I can't do natto. The smell and the strings and the taste...

Anyways, I love these videos. The guy cooking seems really cool.

  • Thank you for putting this up!! My first and last attempt in making Miso came out like puke soup! my roommates wouldn't even try it because the entire kitchen stank, I don't blame them. Again thank you! Perhaps I can give it another try lol

  • I LOVE MISO SOUP! It's like the best soup! :3

  • God i want to make this but ingredients are so hard to find

  • i love this soup.. always have this when eating on a Japanese restaurant.. its so good..

  • Where do I get the Miso paste?

  • i hope this helps.

you can get most of the Miso paste at japanese supermarket. If you stay in singapore, go to Liang court, there is a supermarket named medi-ya ( not sure of the spelling ).

  • Going to try this...again - but I have the powder dashi...
