  • Another great video bro !!!!

  • hey davey what would you recomend to get me as a starting guitar repair tools?

  • Davey , does harder frets mean more broken strings ?

  • Someone needs to invent some hardened steel frets.

  • @JulianZeezer

    they did

    stainless steel frets

  • @davey4557 and don't forget the crystal frets.. look it up on youtube....

  • OMG THIS IS THE ONLY VIDEO IN YOUTUBE THAT DOESNT HAVE A DISLIKE!! mom wont believe it!

  • got a lil drunk didnt ya dave, keep rockin lol

  • Hi Dave, I do this sh.t for over thirtyfive years.

I never use a crowning file. They are a bad idea. Instead I use a triangular shaped file with smoothed round edges. From edge to edge my file measures about half an inch.

All you need to prevent scratches on your board is a piece of paper. I use empty guitarstring bags for this purpose. This way is easier and more controlled. Try it, it's 3x faster.

There's more tips. Get in touch with the dutch man.;-)

  • I've just refretted a classical for the first time; I'm so grateful to you for the expertise. Any advice/video on grinding files safely...?

  • @gergthims

somewhere in my over 400 videos it's in there

    i'm sure of it

    :)

    cheers !!!

  • @gergthims You talk the talk but you haven't actually showed us anything !!! show us how to do it, Start walking the walk.

  • @gergthims I spoke too soon, sorry man just saw 2nd part while sending first response.

  • When you do the leveling do you have the neck straight or with some relief? I was thinking the if you do it flat it would be bad because a neck should never be perfectly flat. But, I am not a luthier haha

  • @azfryguy

neck is straight as possible for levelling

    relief is a trussrod adjustment

  • Haha. "I'm a Professional"

Too right man, we don't need the shirt to tell us. Your vids say it all!

    Cheers

  • Finally, I've actually seen how it's done! Thank you :)

  • Always learning new things! Thanks a bunch man!

  • @MonkeyBoyBasses

    thanks !!!

    and drink more beer

  • Four Horsemen! Wow didnt expect to hear that....saw them at a small venue in 1993...AMAZING show...RIP Frank and Dimwit....oh and thanks for the tips on fret dressing :-)

  • wow! your a super quick with your responses! thanks so much, should i only use 2000 grit or should i do the sequence like on the vid, 400, 600 , 800, 1000, 1500, do i sand by hand or with a palm sander and what kind of oil do you recommend, olive oil, motor oil or wd40? sorry i'm a newbie to fretwork

  • @satriani32

do the sequence if 2000 dont work

  • after watching video the most important thing i learned is...how delicious that caesar looks!! but no salt rim? no celery. great vid btw, canadian tire rocks :)

  • @satriani32

    Thanks for the comment

    Cheers !!!

  • @davey4557

no worries. actually i did want to ask, i have a guitar i just set up, the whole bit and now that the action is nice and long and the truss is super straight noticed that the frets catch a bit, almost like grinding or "bumping" when i bend, but they are not visible to the naked eye like on your guitar.Only when I look under a loop and and sunlight i can see little inclusion like scratches on the crowned part going down the length of the each fret, can i just sand it with the wetdry?

  • sorry i meant the action is nice and LOW. lol btw the guitar is a 1 year old ibanez, could it have come from the factory or store this way, i have had guitars for 10 plus years that have nothin like this and i play the snot out of all these other guitar, what causes this after only 1 year??

  • @satriani32

    Yes !!

The frets just are not polished enough

go to at least 2000 grit

I use a drop of oil to lubricate the paper

    Cheers !!!!

  • @satriani32 soft frets. My ibanez rg1527z in less than a year need a refret. Ibanez quality this days sucks

  • Uriah Heep, awesome.

  • Where are you located. As informative as this video is, fret dressing looks pretty intense and time consuming so I think I would rather pay someone to do it.

  • @milczarczyk

    I live in Toronto, (downtown)

    Cheers !!!

  • Man, tell me one thing. In this crowning file you have 3 wides of crowning endes. What size do you use? When I use smallest and middle sizes it leaves like higher top and when i use biggest one it makes fret like wide and flat, but rounded. I'm confused as hell.

  • @AcidSmoker

the file should ride on top the fret and not touch the fret board

my diamond files are slightly different than the old brut

i look at the file matched over the fret under a magnifier

the file must never touch the freat board and ride on the fret

  • Great video's! Really informative! - I need a fret redress, and being the prat I am before watching this video, thought I needed a complete REFRET. Duh... haha I'm subscribing - good stuff

  • @Bigpineapple

    Thanks man

    Cheers !!!

  • Great stuff dave, ive thought bout getting fret work stuff, in 2 years id probably earn that money back in fret work costs. and "if you screw up, dont tell anybody" ha, I remember when i leave a guitar for some work and it comes back and go "was that there ..before?... I dont remember...."

  • always a pleasure to watch your vids dude!

  • @19fenderman60

    Thanks and Cheers !!!

  • great vid man! i'd be yer dummy... too far away tho man!

  • @RobsterJay

when ya grow up and leave yer momma's tit someday

    LOL

  • @davey4557 HAHA! Suckle Suckle...

wait.. that tastes like beer... oh wait, IT IS a bottle of beer!

  • awesome i'll have to try it out on an old beater first and see how it goes

  • @RcUniverseGuy

    Good idea !!!

  • Dave, i am working on a 12 string, and it has a fret wire about 1/4' from the nut that actual serves as some type of steel nut or something with actual groves filed in it, sorry I don't really understand what purpose it serves, do you? Also the frets a pretty bad along the whole neck very flat looking, almost like they were leveled but never crowned, how much fret do you think should be reaming to say they can be re-crowned vs replaced

  • @dbhoward56

    That's called a zero fret

intonation starts there as apposed to the nut

    research zero fret on google

  • @dbhoward56

I would have to see it with my eyes to give a true evaluation

sounds like it needs a refret

that is why the zero fret was grooved

    Bummer

  • @davey4557

Thanks! A Zero Fret, what a concept, Googled it as you said. Before i was concerned about the nut, I had never made one for a 12 string, now I know it is only for spacing and needs to be deep enough so the string doesnt sit in the nut only passes through, thanks for helping me make one less mistake!!!!

  • @dbhoward56

    always hoping to help

    Cheers man !!!

  • it wont be long i can start doing this myself lol Just Kidding

  • coll stuff saint dave

  • @herrfilm

Stewmac should be paying me a fee
