Drive-ins are just not profitable enough. I hate to see them dying but I understand why. If I get the chance I will open one just to see one stay open. My county had 7 drive ins 25 years ago and now they are all gone. Visit them and spend lots of money if you want to keep yours.
@TakeDetour Exactly. Taken for granted, we assumed that drive in theaters would always be here. Wrong. Those fortunate enough to still have them should go, and...VISIT the snack bar...it is the snack bar profits that will keep it alive.
I'm sad to see the drive-in closing. I'm originally from Winston-Salem and I would visit Mt. Airy with my band, The Soul Brothers, to play inside the old Cecil Hennis Motor Company building, now a beauty shop.
Will the Bright Leaf property become a Home Depot, Lowe's, Sam's Club, K-Mart, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or another business?
Have you ever driven away with the speaker hanging out ?

They are closed as of today 2-25-10. They closed because the land owner wont release and they are selling the land.

Intersting piece. Too bad you couldn't have character generated a couple of people walking around. I had several in my town:
The LANSING - State office building
The STAR LITE - An empty lot
The CREST - A church parking lot
The NORTHSIDE - An empty lot
The M78 - An empty lot
Were there any other drive in theaters in the Mt. Airy area?
