"If you do this with the big sword, it will take your body away from you."
I love how he worded that. ^^
Anyway, I really dig the look of this style. It looks a lot more fun then kendo, anyway. Also, I think I see some European longsword similarities in it. I really wish there was someone around where I live who could teach it to me.
More likely the zhanmadao, changdao or wodao; from what I understand the miao dao is a modern sword.
Anyway, I'd say most swords have been "proven effective in battle." That's pretty much the minimum requirement for qualifying as a weapon in the first place.
You said it! that is exactly the case with traditional martial arts in general. Still, people won't believe things of the old are effective and resort to kickboxing and the blasphemy of mma.
@dragonblood911 Which battle would that be? Miaodao was never developed to counter the Japanese blade. In fact, the miaodao and japanese katana share the same ancestor. The only time during the Ming dynasty when Chinese fought Japanese would be to kick out Japanese pirates from the south. The use of small group tactics was the achievement developed from this encounter, not the miaodao.
a good set of warm ups is almost as important as practicing between classes on your own time. it gives awesome fundamentals. great video i love this kind of video.
Remember this is a beginners class. The Shinai allows Mike to demonstrate the applications of the moves in the form without any danger to the students. The actual Miao Dao is an imposing weapon and too long and heavy for inexperienced students to swing around in a group. It is better to find yourself a clear room in which to practice with the Dao after learning the form.
I hope to have the opportunity to learn more from Mike about this weapon in the future as his instruction is excellent.
Interesting; I studied some Miao Dao, no forms, just 2 person strategies, cutting exercises, quite different than these though. Practicing Test Cutting makes a big difference in training/technique, it would help take these kind of drills to another level...
Thanks. Miao Dao has a long history from the army to Pigua Styles. Best looking it up through google, lok for thomas chen sword history. I would suggest to find a teacher who teaches weapons. Very helpful tools....
Did the Chinese invent the shinai?

miaodao's technique is used to counter the samurai's katana, proven effective in battle during the Ming dynasty.

That kind of use of words is common in chinese language. Maybe his teacher told him in this manner.
