I raise my own pears... they don't need to BE sprayed, they are a pretty pest free crop. Peaches on the other hand... a TOUGH ONE, everything gets to those. Don't do that pear trick with an apple, though... i'm sure you know apple seeds are poisonous.
The seeds of pears, apples and some other fruit contain cyanogenic glycosides and when such seeds are chewed and swallowed, they mix with the stomach's acids to form a type of cyonide....which we all know is poisonous. Though the risk of getting ill or dying from eating the "guts" of the pear are very minimal, people should avoid the seeds because there is no nutritional value, only a risk of illness. (Pyrus Communis)
do oyu talk about the swin flu? they changed the naem becuase the pig people said it ws destroying ther profit peopel started to associate pigs with illness...imagine that ...pigs adnno healthynessby the way that fuit looks a amazing good!!
@tekproxy pre-cut fruit often has the skin cut off - so less fiber - and has preservatives and stuff to keep it fresh. It's also often sitting in sugar water. You don't necessarily have to eat organic but there are some "dirty dozen" fruits and veggies that are better to buy organic because they tend to have lots of pesticide residue. Google it.
@curlytoes79 yes, the skin is a tad healthier, but the benefits are dwarfed by the actual fruit itself. apple peels have 2 to 6 times the anti-oxidants but they're far less than 1/6 the total weight of the apple. preservatives are not always bad (ascorbic acid...) sitting in sugar water seems to be splitting hairs since fruit has a lot of sugar. organic farmers also use pesticides, do people really think they don't? really? i have googled it and the results are inconclusive. organic=hype
@tekproxy Organic farmers use pesticides but tend to use them less. They also use 'natural' pesticides rather than synthetic; whether natural is better in this case is still under investigation. I scrub everything before I eat it, if there's no thick peel. I personally am not as concerned about eating organic as about eating fruit that is missing a nutritious component (skin) and has added sugar. Fruit is sugary enough, as you say.
Fresh Organic Fruit, natures candy! It angers me when I think of the fact I used to stuff my face with high fructose God knows what. Fresh fruit, a bit of organic chocolate, and I am all set!
Organic pears are so damn good they feel decadent, especially when they're so juicy that you can't eat it without the juice running down your chin and arms. So you have to go outside to eat it and squish your toes in the grass, get pear juice everywhere, and nothing exists except for you, that pear, the grass, sunshine, and sticky fingers.
Organic is the best! But it's tough when things are tight, money wise. Too bad organic produce is so expensive. I went to my local Whole Foods market which I love to go to. One organic greatfruit was like $3. Then regular supermarket sold thme for $1 each, even though they were conventional. But the good thing about thick skinned fruit is that the pesticides can't penetrate the interior as deeply as thin skinned fruit like apples, peaches, grapes and berries. Thanks Susan!
THE best pears, I'm talking best, are Asian pears. Bigger, meatier, juicier, but usually more expensive. At any rate, Susan I love this vid. Gonna go get an organic pear.
