  • Great

  • So many awesome quotes in this video.

  • i like his voice

  • DAMN YOU SOUND LIKE JESUS TO ME!!!!! i wish i could afford berklee's tuition fees :P

  • @joe62293

Derek has this little video on needing funding - check it out

  • AMEN!!!!

  • This is gold!

  • love you Derek - thanks for all your valuable experience-

Tricia Greenwood - I met you at ASCAP

  • Great speech! Instant favourite!!!

  • "Money is nothing more than neutral proof that you are adding value to people's lives." Love it!

  • Love this!

  • And you never made much money by selling your own records because you probably didn't learn much. You obviously didn't take any entertainment law classes to understand that you were selling illegal content.

  • Entertainment lawyer is what should have been in the previous message.

  • I wouldn't listen to Derek, while at CD Baby, they were selling and distributing CDs with recordings of mine that weren't licensed. The "explitive" wouldn't remove the content. I had to wait about a year until the jerk sold the company to Diskmakers and then they pulled the content. The first thing anyone should before posting content that includes other musicians is GET AN ENTERTAINMENT FIRST and make sure your content is legal to post, sell and distribute.

  • this is amazing.

  • Typo correction : There are many WAYS* where the world

  • if you want to become a music clone go to these clone estabisments like berklee, and you're loaded for majors, like the other slaves

  • wonderful speech!

  • good speech

  • @balarko24 You like the artists who make money and consider those that don't burdens of those around them. Deep.

  • For those on the money debate, never do anything for free. What's the point? You make the value of music drop to nothing.

  • @darkbyke On the contrary - you DEGRADE the value of music as an art form by putting a money value to it. Art should be free and available to everyone. It has a greater purpose : to heal, to unite, to make you think.

Things that are for the benefit of humanity should be free.

  • @florencelovme Are you kidding? The world doesn't revolve around hugs and kisses. You can't pay rent or buy food with hugs. There's a lot of things in the world that could benefit humanity, but do you see people jumping up to quit their jobs to go do that? No.

  • @darkbyke well, they should. I said how things SHOULD be, NOT how they are. Learn to read. There are many where the world could make a living and it is not by working 9/5 on a daily basis and get paid with paper money. Community trade has proven to work very well with ppl who live in the Himalayas and up in the Andes. I'll reverse your question and ask you in turn, Do you realize how many USELESS jobs ppl are doing these days?

And why are you referring to music production as a job? It is ART

  • Derek is one of those rare people who passes on the secrets and realizations that he has learned in his life.

  • how do you get to Carnegie Hall..

    duh.....ask derek, he'll tell you;;;practice hard....

and people pay for this tripe.>>>?

  • he never stops smirking... it's creepy in a Richard simmons kind of way..... I'm just saying....

  • I won't lie, I disagree with pretty much everything he said.

  • I just wanted to let you know that I watch this video to get me motivated to practice intensely. Its extremely helpful. Im applying to Berklee for early action this year

  • me to

  • Hi Derek,

I used to play in a band with the current Dean Of Music at Berklee. He taught me more than he knows he taught me. It's amazing you graduated in two years. Cudos. As I learn more about you, I see how you have paved new roads. You are very disciplined. All the best. Arlene Faith

  • Nice speech, enjoyed listening to it. Also, I gotta remember this one: "When you're not practicing, someone else is. And when you meet him, he will beat you."

  • This seems to be the army of music.

  • My sister is just about to enter Berklee, and im glad I´ve found this. I can have a clearer picture of what she´s going to go through. Thanks!

  • 5 stars for you Derek! WOW! You are such an inspiration and always worth listening to! THANKS for all your great advice! :-))

  • I was in the audience for this speech for my Orientation at Berklee and I still refer back to it for inspiration. Thanks Derek!

  • Love this :)

  • hater

  • to disagree is not to hate....the word hater over played and way over used....conflicting ideas should be welcome....less of course you are afraid to debate ideas.....and "hater".....grade school nonsense....you want to talk hate...talk KKK, talk being black in atlanta 25 years ago.....

  • shut up and go to bed, such irrelevant drivel.

  • Comment removed

  • The networking at Berklee can not be taught.

    :-)

  • Uh, case you didn't know,Derek Sivers is rich.

He founded cdbaby and made mega money doing it for years.

He eventually sold the company and stayed on as a consultant.

By the way,how many millions have you made yet?????

  • @jmcelve2

if money is you success barometer......stay out of music......

  • You know, middledge, you made me rethink my mindset about that, thanks.

  • Thanks! Loved it!

  • nice

  • Very open words to the people in the crowd that are persuing in the ways of music.

You've presented to the newcomers excellent!! :D

  • This is everything that I had wanted to give myself in an inner pep-talk about practice and committment, but could never phrase. God bless this man. What an inspirational and entertaining speech.

  • One of the most clever people in the music business

  • I'm requiring all my students to watch this. Thanks.

  • Absolutely Inspiring.....thanx!

  • you just spoke a great word of encouragement into my life...amen.

  • I had some thoughts about some of the things you said, but couldnt have put it so clearly. Thank you so much

  • Very inspiring, practical and real. Thanks!
