The style of conducting that Brian is using is also called "point" style conducting. In this style Every beat is at the same point and the "and" are also giving a position in the pattern. Notice when he counts off, 1 and 2 are at the same "point" as well as the "ands".

The conducting is fine. He's conducting eighth notes with a half note feel. At :30 it goes to 3/8 (or possibly 6/8, but it doesn't look like he was conducting 6/8) until :35, then it switches back. The 3/8 is probably why he is conducting eighth notes (and why the Dr. Beat was clicking that fast). Also, he's not conducting just the horn line. This is obviously part of their book, and we don't know what the pit, battery, or guard are doing during this part of the show. It may be for them.

 I was the Horn Sargent for 2007 Memphis Sound. We were the last Div 3 Champs in DCI history. After that experience, I have lots more respect for little corps, they work just as hard as the big guys.
