though they ARE the same company, boxer3main is right.... syncro is vastly different than quattro, and much more similar to older subaru AWD, or even haldex systems in other vw's, volvo's, etc.

@sliversurfer1 Just because VW and Audi have been partners doesnt mean they share exact same drivetrains. The 4motion/synchro is a Haldex based 4WD system that is FWD with RWD Support rather than permanent AWD. The Quattro AWD System is much different than VW's 4motion/synchro. The Audi S3 and TT have the Haldex 4motion setup rather than the Quattro setup. And the .:R32 also uses the Haldex based 4motion. I know this because I am a Volkswagen/Audi enthusiast myself. The VW Syncros had excellent front/rear power distribution, a very low first gear, and the rear diff could be locked. Not very much power but the drivetrain more than compensated for that.

They need a diff locker otherwise they are useless offroad. Those vans hardly have any suspension travel.
