I don't know about the saddest video game song, but it's definitely in my top 10, even though Celes didn't die... She still tried to kill herself when you don't save Cid. :(
The fact that such a beautiful love song gets remixed for her death scene is cruelly ironic...
My friend actually got pissed at me when Celes jumped off the cliff while trying to commit suicide since, if I recall correctly, the player has the option to choose to jump since he thought it was for real at the time.
I make music remixes, and I am currently making VGM remixes for tons of games, so check out my channel if you're interested, and give some suggestions if you'd like a specific song to be done.
The part where she can't take it anymore and jumps off the cliff, and the sadness of this tune is one of the best parts of the story, Heartwrenching even for a game. Luckily she survived, I really thought it was the end for her the first time I played it. Years ago.
This song is amazing. It makes you feel ... weird. If you've played this game, this will bring back many memories.
Am I the only one that thinks that Celes IS the main character of Final Fantasy VI ? She should've been the one in the PSP game ... no offense to Terra but ... Celes did so much more.
@GebouYeah Celes became the most active in the party, but Terra was very central to the story. The image of a commando woman hanging out with the Onion Knight is actually pretty funny, though. I imagine she'd be like Serah Conner. Hell, it would've been really interesting seeing her play off of Kefka in Dissidia.
only time a video game that i cried was when cid died and she threw her self off that cliff. oh how i love the anonymity of the internet so i can admit that LOL
During the opera scene of this game, which uses the same melody, I remember calling my parents to come in and watch because I was so amazed with the newness of it. They weren't impressed. The resulting disappointment ruined my childhood and made me into the cynical bastard I am today.
@Arctercon LOL, I know exacly what you mean, I remember how I was naive back then. When I finished a game I always went to my father telling him "dad, I finished look how good I am".. and he was like "meh, good for you".
@Arctercon Wow, that's too bad. My mom's a musician, so when I called her in for the opera, she was like, "They made this for a video game? But... isn't that a waste of great music? I thought it was supposed to be all beeps and boops. What kind of game needs something so emotional?"
@Socran So sad. Videogames like RPGs, mostly, are stories and music in used for ambience. Even movies needs music. A videogame is like a interactive movie, a sort.
First of all, what you must understand is that noone who is uninterested in something will be amazed by it's progress. Indeed, they must have thought "It doesn't even look realistic, why not go watch a theater". But they are grown in a time where there were no video games. To someone who grew up with them every advancement id important. If only they knew that it was a great step towards virtual reindition of reality with the player in control.
@Arctercon I feel your pain, my parents focus too much on other things to actually care about video games and whenever I mention video games they seem to just ignore what I say.
@rottenwigga I sort of know that.. When I was telling my ex, I loved this kind of soundtrack while let her listen to few music from Nobuo Uematsu, Hitoshi Sakimoto, Keni Ito, Sugiyama etc.. , she liked it a lot, when I finally tell her it's coming from a game. She did her best to make it like it's a music only for otaku..
@Arctercon well that way you learn to never bring your parents to something that is your own "lil world", cuz this Final Fantasy was my own, my own adventure... i didnt share it with no one else haha
I'm playing through this masterpiece again. Oh god, Celes and the Northern Cliffs... the Opera Scene...Celes' constant sacrificing herself for the sake of others...Celes is easily tied with Terra for being not only my favorite character in FFVI but one of my absolute favorites from the FF series.
FF6 is easily my favorite of the main FF games. The opera scene is in my top 3 FF moments, and this song gives me goosebumps everytime because it involves the best part of the opera — Celes' aria.
Same here. I dare somebody to find a song in the entire soundtrack that sucked. Go ahead, I dare you. You'll find the cure for cancer before you find a bad FF6 song.
Johnny C Goode, the bar theme, got pretty repetitive and annoying after about 20 seconds. The Tower of Kefka was pretty bland chanting and organ music.
First off, the song you're thinking of doesn't exist. Second, you're still mixing up names. Third, Fanatic's Tower gave off this dark ominous mood that I loved.
Oops, song was Johnny C Bad. It's song 12 of 2nd soundtrack disc I think. So I called Fanatic's Tower by the wrong name? It's still a boring piece of music. Don't be a douche.
This song always make me think of Celes jumping off that cliff. You can't fool me, Nintendo localization; I knew it was suicide! The song says it all.
I think i notice that some pieces in this song served like a inspiration to Aeris Theme and Eyes on Me

Terra: the ingenuous and very much human female lead of the first half of one of the best games ever made.
Celes: the broken but persevering maiden, her light cutting a path amidst the darkness and despair in the 2nd half of this wonderful game.
Lightning: some chick I wana rape

@Arctercon Everytime, i know! I showed my dad Aerith's theme without telling him it was from a game.
Our conversation:
"Now, this is music! Where did you find this son?"
"Well dad, it's from Final Fantasy VII"
"Never heard of the piece, is it the seventh movement?"
"No...it's from a video game! Pretty cool huh?"
"Hmm...well, it's not THAT good. Here, let me..." and it ended before it even began...

@dunboody Yeah, but the strange thing is that the Zelda File Select Theme (1991) is actually inspired by SMB3's water world theme (1988)!
Plus I heard/read somewhere that Uematsu appreciates the music of Kondō (don't know if this is just a rumour though) but it'd make sense.
