@mamastrofic7 Well it kinda depends on who you ask, but this is quite self-explanatory (I think). All the people he sings about are lonely, or stuck, or sad and they are at the bar to remember and forget in equal measure. They turn to him too, to his music to bring them some happiness. Some say (and I agree) that at the very end when they ask what he's doing there, the song's also about himself. Its a sad, sad song. Yet its beautiful because of it. One of my favorites of all time.

In Billy Joel's day, life stories were told, artists wrote their tears and pains into the music, and that was what gave the song its own personality; like the songwriter is sitting down next to us and talking to us like an old friend. Today's music is empty. What was once lyrics filled with tales that gave us goosebumps, is now a black hole of "going to the club", having sex, getting high. It makes me sick to know that this is my generation.
