My dad's got a Wilesco (a D409 Showman's engine), and we occasionally run it (makes a good photo pairing with my Accucraft Ruby at the grade crossings!) in the garage, although it really could use 2 wheel drive!
Just wondering how hard this was to assemble? I'm thinking of buying one for my Dad who's very mechanically minded (he's a fitter and turner by trade), but not had much to do with models.
@wo2junk They are from a British company named Forest Classics. Just type that into Google and you'll find it easily. They are robust, washable and have good grip, well worth buying to protect the wheels.
i have a wilesco old smokey brass rather than painted. iv had it for 17 years it just site on the shelf i think i will have to run it up this summer and make a vid :D
Hi there. Brand new engines, from an Ebay supplier, are around £190. This is about as cheap as you can get them. I know that sounds like alot but they last ages if you look after them and they are great fun, really reliable, really powerful and smooth running machines. Mine will pull almost anything within reason! Hope this helps. Cheers.
Thanks for the info, I'm hoping to build a 16mm gauge steam line in the garden, but i'd like some other steam powered vehicles, and this looks likethe sort of thing to get.
I LOVE IT! I have the Wilesco Old Smokey Steamroller and I only used it once because I ran out of those Esbit flame tablets. I want to get more of these engines, I am going to have an outdoor LGB Rail layout and since these are in scale to G scale models, these will go great in my layout! Is that a piece of string hanging off the trailer hitch? These steam models are really phenomenal to watch.
Aha I see you are burning those emergency campstove pellets instead of Esbit. That's what I do too, they are just as good and much cheaper, although they may be a bit smellier.
Did you ever paint it? They are easy to take apart and you can make the engine look quite real. Brake caliper or stove paint works on the firebox and won't scorch like the blue paint wilesco uses.
The steering "goes by itself" as it were! It is operated by chains from the steering wheel that you see in the cab. On flat ground, the engine has no trouble in keeping the steering going to the right way. However, if theres any "rough" terrain, then it steers where it wants! Some people have however fitted radio control to them.Cheers
Very nice engine and well presented, too!

is the boiler preasure really 15 psi
blackfivemr 2 years ago
Yeah (1.5 bar). Its the highest pressure engines can work at before they need a boiler certificate and tests etc I believe.

Hi again steampics Great to watch these models.
How does the steering work? Do you let it run where it wants to or is it radio controlled? I have often wondered about this. Great video edoc2.

Thank you very much. The paintwork on the firebox has just worn so badly and the area underneath the canopy is such a pain to get oil off.
steampics 3 years ago
i know thats why i took it off

its only had 20 steamings or so.we are in a pretty soft water area.we are going to use boiled rain water from now on.
steampics 3 years ago
well the best water is distilled water and that is water where the steam has condensed and went in to another holder.
but filter your rain water because of the greenhouse gases and other stuff the water might be a bid corosive to the solder and boiler, well
good luck
Joe
